    Primary pyomyositis in an infant

    Background : Pyomyositis is a subacute bacterial infection of the skeletal muscles. Its most common features are fever, muscle swelling, and focal pain. There have been insufficient data regarding pyomyositis in healthy infants. Case report : A one-month-old boy presented with an impairment of his left arm movement. He was well-nourished and not under any apparent distress. His vital signs were within the normal limits but neurological examination revealed left forearm paralysis. Physical examination showed no abnormal findings in the region from the left shoulder joint to the fingertips. Considering these factors, an intracranial pathology was initially suspected. However, he developed a fever, regular tachycardia, and swelling in the left forearm. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed inflammation in the left forearm muscles. He was diagnosed with bacterial myositis and started on intravenous antibiotics. On the 17th day, he was discharged with oral antibiotic treatment, which was completed over 25 days without any sequelae nor relapse. Conclusion : Here we report the case of Japanese primary pyomyositis following one-day afebrile upper limb monoplegia in an infant. Even when infants exhibit afebrile symptoms, a bacterial infection should be suspected

    Ellis–van Creveld syndrome is an autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia that is characterized by thoracic hypoplasia, polydactyly, oral abnormalities, and congenital heart disease. It is caused by pathogenic variants in the EVC or EVC2 genes. We report a case of a newborn with a compound heterozygous variant comprising NM_147127.5: c.1991dup:[p.Lys665Glufs*10] in the EVC2 gene and a novel large deletion involving exon 1 in EVC and exons 1–7 in EVC2

    application/pdf自作バイオリンの音響的評価法の確立を目的として、音色に関する評価法を検討するため、物理的手段としてFast Fourier Transformation(FFT)法、また、心理学的手段としてSemanticDifferential(SD)法を用いた音の分析を試みた。FFT法の適用によって得られたリニアーパワースペクトル(LPS)上には、個々のバイオリンについての比較的明瞭な特徴がとらえられたので、バイオリン間の差異を比較して音色に関する検討をした。一方、SD法によって得られた平均印象標語から人の印象が経験に依存して、「直感的」な評価から「価値的」な評価へと、質的な転移をすることが結論された。最後に、FFT法およびSD法の結果を統一的に解釈するための今後の基礎的な研究課題を提案した

    Macrophage migration inhibitory factor contributes to development of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs-induced gastric injury in mice

    Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) plays an important role in the development of inflammation. In this study, we evaluated the role of MIF in gastric injury induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in mice. To induce gastric injury, mice were intraperitnoneally injected with 35 mg/kg of indomethacin. The level of MIF protein was up-regulated and severe gastric injury with inflammatory infiltrate was observed in the stomach of wild-type (WT) mice treated with indomethacin. The severity of gastric injury in MIF-deficient mice was less than that in WT mice. Increase in TNF-α in gastric tissue of mice treated with indomethacin was suppressed in MIF-deficient mice. The expression of HSP70, which has a cytoprotective role, was remarkably up-regulated in the stomach of MIF-deficient mice compared with WT mice after indomethacin treatment. Our results suggest that MIF is essential for the development of gastric injury-induced by NSAIDs

    Cell competition with normal epithelial cells promotes apical extrusion of transformed cells through metabolic changes

    Recent studies have revealed that newly emerging transformed cells are often apically extruded from epithelial tissues. During this process, normal epithelial cells can recognize and actively eliminate transformed cells, a process called epithelial defence against cancer (EDAC). Here, we show that mitochondrial membrane potential is diminished in RasV12-transformed cells when they are surrounded by normal cells. In addition, glucose uptake is elevated, leading to higher lactate production. The mitochondrial dysfunction is driven by upregulation of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 (PDK4), which positively regulates elimination of RasV12-transformed cells. Furthermore, EDAC from the surrounding normal cells, involving filamin, drives the Warburg-effect-like metabolic alteration. Moreover, using a cell-competition mouse model, we demonstrate that PDK-mediated metabolic changes promote the elimination of RasV12-transformed cells from intestinal epithelia. These data indicate that non-cell-autonomous metabolic modulation is a crucial regulator for cell competition, shedding light on the unexplored events at the initial stage of carcinogenesis
