    Postoperative Vision Loss Following Spine Surgery and the Implications for Anesthesia Providers

    While postoperative vision loss following spine surgery is a rare complication; it has proven to be a devastating problem when it occurs. The American Society of Anesthesiologists compiled a closed-claims study in which only 3o/o of claims were from eye injuries, however, the patients with these injuries received significantly higher monetary settlements in comparison to patients with other injuries. This statistic alone warrants attention to this surgical complication The purpose of this project is to conduct a comprehensive review of the literature regarding postoperative vision loss, specifically following spine surgery, and the anesthesia implications. A poster presentation will be developed to be presented to graduate level students The expected results of this comprehensive review will help to provide insight into the complication of postoperative vision loss. It will also help understand the pathophysiology behind postoperative vision loss, as well as help determine guidelines for anesthesia practice to help prevent this complication from occurring The implications of this research are mainly related to prevention. Current treatment of postoperative vision loss has been largely unsuccessful. Therefore it is imp01iant to identify those at risk. A complication of vision loss from a surgery essentially unrelated to the eye is unacceptable to patients. Therefore, more research is needed to attempt to identify exact causes to help guide the anesthetic management of patients undergoing spine procedure

    The Period protein homolog LIN-42 negatively regulates microRNA biogenesis in C. elegans

    AbstractMicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNAs that post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression in many multicellular organisms. They are encoded in the genome and transcribed into primary (pri-) miRNAs before two processing steps that ultimately produce the mature miRNA. In order to generate the appropriate amount of a particular miRNA in the correct location at the correct time, proper regulation of miRNA biogenesis is essential. Here we identify the Period protein homolog LIN-42 as a new regulator of miRNA biogenesis in Caenorhabditis elegans. We mapped a spontaneous suppressor of the normally lethal let-7(n2853) allele to the lin-42 gene. Mutations in this allele (ap201) or a second lin-42 allele (n1089) caused increased mature let-7 miRNA levels at most time points when mature let-7 miRNA is normally expressed. Levels of pri-let-7 and a let-7 transcriptional reporter were also increased in lin-42(n1089) worms. These results indicate that LIN-42 normally represses pri-let-7 transcription and thus the accumulation of let-7 miRNA. This inhibition is not specific to let-7, as pri- and mature levels of lin-4 and miR-35 were also increased in lin-42 mutants. Furthermore, small RNA-seq analysis showed widespread increases in the levels of mature miRNAs in lin-42 mutants. Thus, we propose that the period protein homolog LIN-42 is a global regulator of miRNA biogenesis

    Bodyweight Perceptions among Texas Women: The Effects of Religion, Race/Ethnicity, and Citizenship Status

    Despite previous work exploring linkages between religious participation and health, little research has looked at the role of religion in affecting bodyweight perceptions. Using the theoretical model developed by Levin et al. (Sociol Q 36(1):157–173, 1995) on the multidimensionality of religious participation, we develop several hypotheses and test them by using data from the 2004 Survey of Texas Adults. We estimate multinomial logistic regression models to determine the relative risk of women perceiving themselves as overweight. Results indicate that religious attendance lowers risk of women perceiving themselves as very overweight. Citizenship status was an important factor for Latinas, with noncitizens being less likely to see themselves as overweight. We also test interaction effects between religion and race. Religious attendance and prayer have a moderating effect among Latina non-citizens so that among these women, attendance and prayer intensify perceptions of feeling less overweight when compared to their white counterparts. Among African American women, the effect of increased church attendance leads to perceptions of being overweight. Prayer is also a correlate of overweight perceptions but only among African American women. We close with a discussion that highlights key implications from our findings, note study limitations, and several promising avenues for future research

    Effects of antiplatelet therapy on stroke risk by brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases: subgroup analyses of the RESTART randomised, open-label trial

    Background Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage.
