    Uniform Boundedness of S-Units in Arithmetic Dynamics

    Let K be a number field and let S be a finite set of places of K which contains all the Archimedean places. For any f(z) in K(z) of degree d at least 2 which is not a d-th power in \bar{K}(z), Siegel's theorem implies that the image set f(K) contains only finitely many S-units. We conjecture that the number of such S-units is bounded by a function of |S| and d (independently of K and f). We prove this conjecture for several classes of rational functions, and show that the full conjecture follows from the Bombieri--Lang conjecture

    Will Swing Pricing Save Sedentary Shareholders?

    This Article explains and explores new Securities Exchange Commission rules authorizing optional swing pricing for mutual funds. Swing pricing is an anti-dilution tool intended to protect sedentary investors who enter, and stay, in a fund. Workers setting aside money for retirement are often sedentary investors. Mutual funds are the mainstay vehicle for retirement investors, yet as sedentary shareholders they can experience significant asset dilution over their savings lifetime. Swing pricing—a mutual fund pricing mechanism that allocates transaction costs to the triggering shareholders—could save sedentary shareholders, collectively, billions of dollars. The mutual fund industry’s operational complexities and competing regulatory obligations may prevent funds from immediately utilizing swing pricing once it becomes effective in November 2018. The biggest obstacle is a time conflict reminiscent of the chicken and egg problem. Under current industry operations, mutual funds will not receive the trading information necessary to adjust the daily price of the fund (swing the price) until after funds have to finalize the price adjustment. Blockchain technology—offering secure, automated, and verified ledgers—may present an operational path forward for the industry. The SEC’s swing pricing approach leaves unanswered how funds will overcome these, and other, hurdles. This Article explores the components of swing pricing, as well as the objections to and perceived benefits of swing pricing, and concludes with two unique perspectives on the SEC rules: one academic and one professional. This Article maintains that mutual funds should take on the challenge of implementing swing pricing, and that market incentives will pave the way

    Face engagement during infancy predicts later face recognition ability in younger siblings of children with autism

    Face recognition difficulties are frequently documented in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). It has been hypothesized that these difficulties result from a reduced interest in faces early in life, leading to decreased cortical specialization and atypical development of the neural circuitry for face processing. However, a recent study by our lab demonstrated that infants at increased familial risk for ASD, irrespective of their diagnostic status at 3 years, exhibit a clear orienting response to faces. The present study was conducted as a follow-up on the same cohort to investigate how measures of early engagement with faces relate to face-processing abilities later in life. We also investigated whether face recognition difficulties are specifically related to an ASD diagnosis, or whether they are present at a higher rate in all those at familial risk. At 3 years we found a reduced ability to recognize unfamiliar faces in the high-risk group that was not specific to those children who received an ASD diagnosis, consistent with face recognition difficulties being an endophenotype of the disorder. Furthermore, we found that longer looking at faces at 7 months was associated with poorer performance on the face recognition task at 3 years in the high- risk group. These findings suggest that longer looking at faces in infants at risk for ASD might reflect early face-processing difficulties and predicts difficulties with recognizing faces later in life

    Infant Neural Sensitivity to Dynamic Eye Gaze relates to quality of parent–infant interaction at 7-months in infants at risk for Autism

    Links between brain function measures and quality of parent–child interactions within the early developmental period have been investigated in typical and atypical development. We examined such links in a group of 104 infants with and without a family history for autism in the first year of life. Our findings suggest robust associations between event related potential responses to eye gaze and observed parent–infant interaction measures. In both groups, infants with more positive affect exhibit stronger differentiation to gaze stimuli. This association was observed with the earlier P100 waveform component in the control group but with the later P400 component in infants at-risk. These exploratory findings are critical in paving the way for a better understanding of how infant laboratory measures may relate to overt behavior and how both can be combined in the context of predicting risk or clinical diagnosis in toddlerhood

    Organometallic nucleoside analogues: effect of hydroxyalkyl linker length on cancer cell line toxicity

    A new series of chiral ferrocene derivatives containing both a hydroxyalkyl group and a thyminyl group on one cyclopentadienyl ring have been synthesised to probe structure–activity relationships in cancer cell line cytotoxicities. The stereoisomers of enantiomeric pairs of these so-called ferronucleosides have been studied and characterised by a combination of chiral analytical HPLC and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Biological activity studies revealed that changing the length of the hydroxyalkyl group had marked effects on IC50 values, with compounds having shorter arms that more closely resemble endogenous nucleosides exhibiting lower cytotoxicities. The lipophilicities and electrochemical properties of this compound series have been studied to rationalise these trends and indicate future directions of study

    Application of a lifestyle-based score to predict cardiovascular risk in African Americans: The Jackson heart study

    Cardiovascular disease (CVD) primordial prevention tools applicable to diverse popula-tions are scarce. Our aim was to assess the performance of a lifestyle-based tool to estimate CVD risk in an African American population. The Jackson Heart Study is a prospective cohort including 5306 African American participants in Jackson, Mississippi (2000–2004), with a mean follow up of 12 years. The Healthy Heart Score is a lifestyle-based CVD risk prediction model based on nine components: body mass index (BMI), physical activity, smoking, and a 5-component diet score. Gender-specific beta coefficients from its derivation cohorts were used to assess the performance of the Healthy Heart Score. Model discrimination was assessed using Harrell’s C-Index for survival data and time dependent Area Under the Curve. Model calibration was evaluated through calibration plots. A total of 189 CVD events occurred. The Healthy Heart Score showed high-moderate discrimination for CVD events (C-statistic 0.75 [95% CI, 0.71–0.78]) but with little improvement over the age-only model. Both the age-only and Healthy Heart Score models had better performance in participants without diabetes at baseline and showed good calibration.
