    The effects of background noise on distortion product otoacoustic emissions and hearing screenings

    Hearing screenings are an important tool for identifying children who have, or are at risk for hearing loss in the schools. In light of a body of evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of objective screening measures, such as otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) recommends traditional pure tone audiometric screening as the tool of choice for hearing screenings in the schools. Pure tone audiometric screenings conducted in the schools are problematic for a number of reasons, but the most significant is the presence of background noise which is routinely encountered. The main purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of noise levels on two types of hearing screenings, pure tone audiometric hearing screening and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) screening. The two screening measures were compared in twenty young adults with normal hearing in a sound treated booth. The results showed that as noise levels (40, 50, and 60 dB SPL) increased, significant numbers of listeners failed the pure tones but passed the DPOAEs; indicating that DPOAEs are more resistant to background noise and should be considered as a more effective screening measure when background noise is present

    The feasibility of applying multilevel functional decomposition and optimization techniques to conceptual design of advanced fighter aircraft was investigated. Applying the functional decomposition techniques to the conceptual design phase appears to be feasible. The initial implementation of the modified design process will optimize wing design variables. A hybrid approach, combining functional decomposition techniques for generation of aerodynamic and mass properties linear sensitivity derivatives with existing techniques for sizing mission performance and optimization, is proposed

    The Determination of Small Amounts of Trichloroethylene

    In research studies on the extraction of soybean oil by trichloroethylene it became necessary to determine small amounts of the solvent in the oil. For amounts above 10 percent trichloroethylene the simplest and best method for control purposes is by means of a specific gravity determination. Measamer (3) has shown that the trichloroethylene may be steam-distilled from the oil and weighed or measured. Three percent trichloroethylene in soybean oil may be determined with a maximum error of 10 percent. Greater accuracy should be possible in solutions containing more of the solvent. For amounts above 10 percent the method is more time consuming and no more accurate than the specific gravity method

    Multidimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the hydrogen injection flash

    The injection of hydrogen into the convection shell powered by helium burning during the core helium flash is commonly encountered during the evolution of metal-free and extremely metal-poor low-mass stars. With specifically designed multidimensional hydrodynamic simulations, we aim to prove that an entropy barrier is no obstacle for the growth of the helium-burning shell convection zone in the helium core of a metal-rich Pop I star, i.e. convection can penetrate into the hydrogen-rich layers for these stars, too. We further study whether this is also possible in one-dimensional stellar evolutionary calculations. Our hydrodynamical simulations show that the helium-burning shell convection zone in the helium core moves across the entropy barrier and reaches the hydrogen-rich layers. This leads to mixing of protons into the hotter layers of the core and to a rapid increase of the nuclear energy production at the upper edge of the helium-burning convection shell - the hydrogen injection flash. As a result a second convection zone appears in the hydrogen-rich layers. Contrary to 1D models, the entropy barrier separating the two convective shells from each other is largely permeable to chemical transport when allowing for multidimensional flow, and consequently, hydrogen is continuously mixed deep into the helium core. We find it difficult to achieve such a behavior in one-dimensional stellar evolutionary calculations.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures - accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics.     Efficient host control predicts the extirpation of ineffective symbionts, but they are nonetheless widespread in nature. We tested three hypotheses for the maintenance of symbiotic variation in rhizobia that associate with a native legume: partner mismatch between host and symbiont, such that symbiont effectiveness varies with host genotype; resource satiation, whereby extrinsic sources of nutrients relax host control; and variation in host control among host genotypes. We inoculated Acmispon strigosus from six populations with three Bradyrhizobium strains that vary in symbiotic effectiveness on sympatric hosts. We measured proxies of host and symbiont fitness in single- and co-inoculations under fertilization treatments of zero added nitrogen (N) and near-growth-saturating N. We examined two components of host control: 'host investment' into nodule size during single- and co-inoculations, and 'host sanctions' against less effective strains during co-inoculations. The Bradyrhizobium strains displayed conserved growth effects on hosts, and host control did not decline under experimental fertilization. Host sanctions were robust in all hosts, but host lines from different populations varied significantly in measures of host investment in both single- and co-inoculation experiments. Variation in host investment could promote variation in symbiotic effectiveness and prevent the extinction of ineffective Bradyrhizobium from natural populations
