    It is now known that the pineal organ can interact with many endocrine and nonendocrine tissues in a regulatory fashion. Given its key role in the regulation of melatonin synthesis, its high concentration, and that its levels may persist longer than the more rapidly changing melatonin, it was felt that serotonin might give a more accurate assessment of the effects of microgravity on pineal function following recovery of animals from flight. Five-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA), a major metabolite of serotonin metabolism, was also measured. One of the most interesting concomitants to spaceflight and exposure to microgravity has been the disturbing alteration in calcium metabolism and resulting skeletal effects. Given the link between exposure to microgravity and perturbation of calcium metabolism and the fact that the pineal is apparently one of the only soft tissues to calcify, pineal calcium content was examined following spaceflight

    LANDSAT menhaden and thread herring resources investigation

    The author has identified the following significant results. The relationship between the distribution of menhaden and selected oceanographic parameters (water color, turbidity, and possibly chlorophyll concentrations) was established. Similar relationships for thread herring were not established nor were relationships relating to the abundance of either species. Use of aircraft and LANDSAT remote sensing instruments to measure or infer a set of basic oceanographic parameters was evaluated. Parameters which could be accurately inferred included surface water temperature, salinity, and color. Water turbidity (Secchi disk) was evaluated as marginally inferrable from the LANDSAT MSS data and chlorophyll-a concentrations as less than marginal. These evaluations considered the parameters only as experienced in the two test areas using available sensors and statistical techniques

    Converting genetic network oscillations into somite spatial pattern

    In most vertebrate species, the body axis is generated by the formation of repeated transient structures called somites. This spatial periodicity in somitogenesis has been related to the temporally sustained oscillations in certain mRNAs and their associated gene products in the cells forming the presomatic mesoderm. The mechanism underlying these oscillations have been identified as due to the delays involved in the synthesis of mRNA and translation into protein molecules [J. Lewis, Current Biol. {\bf 13}, 1398 (2003)]. In addition, in the zebrafish embryo intercellular Notch signalling couples these oscillators and a longitudinal positional information signal in the form of an Fgf8 gradient exists that could be used to transform these coupled temporal oscillations into the observed spatial periodicity of somites. Here we consider a simple model based on this known biology and study its consequences for somitogenesis. Comparison is made with the known properties of somite formation in the zebrafish embryo . We also study the effects of localized Fgf8 perturbations on somite patterning.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Cluster Approximation for the Contact Process

    The one-dimensional contact process is analyzed by a cluster approximation. In this approach, the hierarchy of rate equations for the densities of finite length empty intervals are truncated under the assumption that adjacent intervals are not correlated. This assumption yields a first order phase transition from an active state to the adsorbing state. Despite the apparent failure of this approximation in describing the critical behavior, our approach provides an accurate description of the steady state properties for a significant range of desorption rates. Moreover, the resulting critical exponents are closer to the simulation values in comparison with site mean-field theory.Comment: 9 pages, Latex format, 2 postscript figure

    Random-cluster representation of the Blume-Capel model

    The so-called diluted-random-cluster model may be viewed as a random-cluster representation of the Blume--Capel model. It has three parameters, a vertex parameter aa, an edge parameter pp, and a cluster weighting factor qq. Stochastic comparisons of measures are developed for the `vertex marginal' when q∈[1,2]q\in[1,2], and the `edge marginal' when q\in[1,\oo). Taken in conjunction with arguments used earlier for the random-cluster model, these permit a rigorous study of part of the phase diagram of the Blume--Capel model
