Synthesis of polyethers of hexafluorobenzene and hexafluoropentanediol
Two new polyethers, poly /hexafluoropentamethylene tetrafluoro-p-phenylene ether/ and a completely hydroxyl-terminated polyether, is prepared by reactions of hexafluorobenzene with hexafluoropentanediol. The polyethers can be prepared as low molecular weight oils, as intermediate molecular weight waxes, or as high molecular weight elastomers

Relaxation Height in Energy Landscapes: an Application to Multiple Metastable States
The study of systems with multiple (not necessarily degenerate) metastable
states presents subtle difficulties from the mathematical point of view related
to the variational problem that has to be solved in these cases. We introduce
the notion of relaxation height in a general energy landscape and we prove
sufficient conditions which are valid even in presence of multiple metastable
states. We show how these results can be used to approach the problem of
multiple metastable states via the use of the modern theories of metastability.
We finally apply these general results to the Blume--Capel model for a
particular choice of the parameters ensuring the existence of two multiple, and
not degenerate in energy, metastable states
Tunneling and Metastability of continuous time Markov chains
We propose a new definition of metastability of Markov processes on countable
state spaces. We obtain sufficient conditions for a sequence of processes to be
metastable. In the reversible case these conditions are expressed in terms of
the capacity and of the stationary measure of the metastable states
Measuring degree-degree association in networks
The Pearson correlation coefficient is commonly used for quantifying the
global level of degree-degree association in complex networks. Here, we use a
probabilistic representation of the underlying network structure for assessing
the applicability of different association measures to heavy-tailed degree
distributions. Theoretical arguments together with our numerical study indicate
that Pearson's coefficient often depends on the size of networks with equal
association structure, impeding a systematic comparison of real-world networks.
In contrast, Kendall-Gibbons' is a considerably more robust measure
of the degree-degree association
Some results and problems for anisotropic random walks on the plane
This is an expository paper on the asymptotic results concerning path
behaviour of the anisotropic random walk on the two-dimensional square lattice
Z^2. In recent years Mikl\'os and the authors of the present paper investigated
the properties of this random walk concerning strong approximations, local
times and range. We give a survey of these results together with some further
problems.Comment: 20 page
Suited for Success? : Suits, Status, and Hybrid Masculinity
This document is the Accepted Manuscript version. The final, definitive version of this paper has been published in Men and Masculinities, March 2017, doi: https://doi.org/10.1177/1097184X17696193, published by SAGE Publishing, All rights reserved. This article analyzes the sartorial biographies of four Canadian men to explore how the suit is understood and embodied in everyday life. Each of these men varied in their subject positions—body shape, ethnicity, age, and gender identity—which allowed us to look at the influence of men’s intersectional identities on their relationship with their suits. The men in our research all understood the suit according to its most common representation in popular culture: a symbol of hegemonic masculinity. While they wore the suit to embody hegemonic masculine configurations of practice—power, status, and rationality—most of these men were simultaneously marginalized by the gender hierarchy. We explain this disjuncture by using the concept of hybrid masculinity and illustrate that changes in the style of hegemonic masculinity leave its substance intact. Our findings expand thinking about hybrid masculinity by revealing the ways subordinated masculinities appropriate and reinforce hegemonic masculinity.Peer reviewe
Prospective, Randomized, Controlled Trial of Tissue Adhesive (2-Octylcyanoacrylate) vs Standard Wound Closure Techniques for Laceration Repair
Objective: To compare a new tissue adhesive, 2-octylcyanoacrylate, with standard wound closure techniques for the repair of traumatic lacerations. Methods: A prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial enrolled consecutive patients >1 year of age with non-bite, non-crush-induced lacerations who presented 3 months) was assessed by physicians using a previously validated categorical cosmetic scale and by patients using a 100-mm visual analog scale. Results : There were 63 patients randomized to the octylcyanoacrylate group and 61 patients treated with standard wound closure techniques. The 2 treatment groups were similar with respect to age, gender, race, medical history, and wound characteristics. At the 5-to-10-day follow-up, only 1 wound was infected and only 2 wounds required reclosure due to dehiscence. These 3 patients received treatment with octylcyanoacrylate. At long-term follow-up, the cosmetic appearances were similar according to the patients (octylcyanoacrylate, 83.8 ± 19.4 mm vs standard techniques, 82.5 ± 17.6 mm; p = 0.72) and the physicians (optimal cosmetic appearance, 77% vs 80%; p = 0.67). Conclusions: Wounds treated with octylcyanoacrylate and standard wound closure techniques have similar cosmetic appearances 3 months later.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/75580/1/j.1553-2712.1998.tb02590.x.pd
