Collisionless galaxy simulations
Three-dimensional fully self-consistent computer models were used to determine the evolution of galaxies consisting of 100 000 simulation stars. Comparison of two-dimensional simulations with three-dimensional simulations showed only a very slight stabilizing effect due to the additional degree of freedom. The addition of a fully self-consistent, nonrotating, exponential core/halo component resulted in considerable stabilization. A second series of computer experiments was performed to determine the collapse and relaxation of initially spherical, uniform density and uniform velocity dispersion stellar systems. The evolution of the system was followed for various amounts of angular momentum in solid body rotation. For initally low values of the angular momentum satisfying the Ostriker-Peebles stability criterion, the systems quickly relax to an axisymmetric shape and resemble elliptical galaxies in appearance. For larger values of the initial angular momentum bars develop and the systems undergo a much more drastic evolution
Open the doors : an analysis of the Prince Edward County, Virginia, Free School Association
When the Supreme Court ordered integration of public schools in 1954 following Brown vs. Board of Education, Virginia responded with a policy of massive resistance. Public schools were closed in Prince Edward County between 1959 and 1964. This thesis examines the school closings themselves, but concentrates primarily on the creation, implementation, and effect of the Prince Edward County Free School Association, a privately funded school system that operated during the 1963-1964 school year. Initiated by the Kennedy Administration as a one-year, emergency program, the Free Schools were designed to reestablish formal education for the county\u27s black children. This thesis relied primarily upon the uncataloged Free School papers, personal interviews and documents from the John F. Kennedy Library. It concluded that the Free Schools were beneficial to the children in regaining lost educational skills, but played an extremely small role in the overall school closings issue

The âGolden Threadâ: Coercive Control and Risk Assessment for Domestic Violence
Research on risk assessment for domestic violence has to date focused primarily on the predictive power of individual risk factors and the statistical validity of risk assessment tools in predicting future physical assault in sub-sets of cases dealt with by the police. This study uses data from risk assessment forms from a random sample of cases of domestic violence reported to the police. An innovative latent trait model is used to test whether a cluster of risk factors associated with coercive control is most representative of the type of abuse that comes to the attention of the police. Factors associated with a course of coercive and controlling conduct, including perpetratorsâ threats, controlling behavior and sexual coercion, and victimsâ isolation and fear, had highest item loadings and were thus the most representative of the overall construct. Sub-lethal physical violenceâchoking and use of weaponsâwas also consistent with a course of controlling conduct. Whether a physical injury was sustained during the current incident, however, was not associated consistently either with the typical pattern of abuse or with other context-specific risk factors such as separation from the perpetrator. Implications for police practice and the design of risk assessment tools are discussed. We conclude that coercive control is the âgolden threadâ running through risk identification and assessment for domestic violence and that risk assessment tools structured around coercive control can help police officers move beyond an âincident-by-incidentâ response and toward identifying the dangerous patterns of behavior that precede domestic homicide
Ground Handling of Batteries at Test and Launch-site Facilities
Ground handling of flight as well as engineering batteries at test facilities and launch-site facilities is a safety critical process. Test equipment interfacing with the batteries should have the required controls to prevent a hazardous failure of the batteries. Test equipment failures should not induce catastrophic failures on the batteries. Transportation requirements for batteries should also be taken into consideration for safe transportation. Involucrin mRNA Is More Abundant in Human Hair Follicles Than in Normal Epidermis
Involucrin is a precursor protein of the cornified cell envelope in epidermal keratinocytes, where it has been located by immunohistochemistry in the upper spinous and granular layers of human epidermis. In the hair follicle, involucrin has been found in the inner root sheath and in the upper layers of the infundibulum and the isthmus (upper outer root sheath), whereas its presence in the lower outer root sheath and the cortex has been controversial. Therefore, we analyzed the distribution of involucrin mRNA in adult scalp by Northern blotting and in situ hybridization. Northern blots showed more abundant involucrin mRNA in the follicular fraction than in the epidermal fraction of dissected scalp. In situ hybridization matched the immunohistologic results; transcripts of involucrin were expressed not only in the infundibulum and isthmus, but also in the hair cortex and medulla, in all layers of the inner root sheath, and in the inner cells of the lower outer root sheath (all of which lack a cell envelope at the ultrastructural level). However, involucrin was absent in the hair cuticle, which is the only compartment of the follicle possessing a morphologically distinct cell envelope. Our results suggest, first, that involucrin does not serve as a precursor protein of the cornified cell envelope in adult hair follicles, and second, that it is perhaps not necessary for the formation of the cell envelope in keratinocytes of the hair cuticle, as we did not find this precursor protein with highly sensitive methodology
Treating Homeless Opioid Dependent Patients with Buprenorphine in an Office-Based Setting
CONTEXT
Although office-based opioid treatment with buprenorphine (OBOT-B) has been successfully implemented in primary care settings in the US, its use has not been reported in homeless patients.
OBJECTIVE
To characterize the feasibility of OBOT-B in homeless relative to housed patients.
DESIGN
A retrospective record review examining treatment failure, drug use, utilization of substance abuse treatment services, and intensity of clinical support by a nurse care manager (NCM) among homeless and housed patients in an OBOT-B program between August 2003 and October 2004. Treatment failure was defined as elopement before completing medication induction, discharge after medication induction due to ongoing drug use with concurrent nonadherence with intensified treatment, or discharge due to disruptive behavior.
RESULTS
Of 44 homeless and 41 housed patients enrolled over 12 months, homeless patients were more likely to be older, nonwhite, unemployed, infected with HIV and hepatitis C, and report a psychiatric illness. Homeless patients had fewer social supports and more chronic substance abuse histories with a 3- to 6-fold greater number of years of drug use, number of detoxification attempts and percentage with a history of methadone maintenance treatment. The proportion of subjects with treatment failure for the homeless (21%) and housed (22%) did not differ (P=.94). At 12 months, both groups had similar proportions with illicit opioid use [Odds ratio (OR), 0.9 (95% CI, 0.5â1.7) P=.8], utilization of counseling (homeless, 46%; housed, 49%; P=.95), and participation in mutual-help groups (homeless, 25%; housed, 29%; P=.96). At 12 months, 36% of the homeless group was no longer homeless. During the first month of treatment, homeless patients required more clinical support from the NCM than housed patients.
CONCLUSIONS
Despite homeless opioid dependent patients' social instability, greater comorbidities, and more chronic drug use, office-based opioid treatment with buprenorphine was effectively implemented in this population comparable to outcomes in housed patients with respect to treatment failure, illicit opioid use, and utilization of substance abuse treatment
Electron dynamics in a plasma focus
Results are presented of a numerical integration of the three-dimensional relativistic equations of motion of electrons subject to given electric and magnetic fields deduced from experiments. Fields due to two different models are investigated. For the first model, the fields are those due to a circular distribution of axial current filaments. As the current filaments collapse toward the axis, large azimuthal magnetic and axial electric fields are induced. These fields effectively heat the electrons to a temperature of approximately 8 keV and accelerate electrons within the radius of the filaments to high axial velocities. Similar results are obtained for the current-reduction phase of focus formation. For the second model, the fields are those due to a uniform current distribution. Both the current-reduction and the compression phases were studied. These is little heating or acceleration of electrons during the compression phase because the electrons are tied to the magnetic field. However, during the current-reduction phase, electrons near the axis are accelerated toward the center electrode and reach energies of 100 keV. A criterion is obtained which limits the runaway electron current to about 400 A
a new Pc-C boundary section
The widespread, terminal Ediacaran Dengying Formation (~ 551â~ 542 Ma) of
South China hosts one of the most prominent negative carbonate carbon isotope
excursions in Earth's history and thus bears on the correlation of the
PrecambrianâCambrian boundary worldwide. The dominantly carbonate strata of
the Dengying Formation are largely studied for their unique preservation of
its terminal Ediacaran fauna but their geochemical context is poorly known.
This study presents the first high-resolution stable isotope record (ÎŽ13C,
ÎŽ18O) of calcareous siliciclastic shallow-water deposits of the Gaojiashan
section (Shaanxi Province). The section includes (in ascending order) the
Algal Dolomite Member, the Gaojiashan Member and the Beiwan Member of the
Dengying Formation. Our data record a major ÎŽ13Ccarb negative excursion to â6
â° in the uppermost Gaojiashan Member which is comparable in shape and
magnitude to the global PrecambrianâCambrian boundary negative ÎŽ13C excursion.
Our data set is consistent with a "shallow-water anoxia" scenario which is
thought to contribute to the "Cambrian explosion". The stratigraphic
occurrence of Cloudina and a large negative ÎŽ13C excursion suggest that the
PrecambrianâCambrian boundary is located near the top of the Gaojiashan Member
and, consequently, that overlying carbonates and dolomites of the Beiwan
Member are of earliest Cambrian age. Thus the Gaojiashan section may represent
a new shallow-water section spanning the PrecambrianâCambrian boundary.
Although bio- and chemostratigraphic data support this novel interpretation,
we cannot exclude the possibility that the key excursions may represent a
local perturbation indicating a restricted-basin environment
Chaotic hysteresis in an adiabatically oscillating double well
We consider the motion of a damped particle in a potential oscillating slowly
between a simple and a double well. The system displays hysteresis effects
which can be of periodic or chaotic type. We explain this behaviour by
