    The dependence on morphology of the gas content in galactic disks

    The classification S0 was introduced by Hubble to serve as a description of galaxies whose morphological characteristics seemed to lie between the disk-dominated spirals and the spheroidal elliptical systems. Since then there has been extensive discussion as to whether this classification sequence is also an evolutionary sequence. Many studies have focussed on a particular feature such as the luminosity profile, the bulge-to-disk ratio, or the nature of the interstellar matter, but the question of the evolution remains contentious. Equally contentious is the question of the classification itself. For systems with well-developed disks there usually is no problem. Many spheroidal systems also are unambiguously classified as ellipticals in most catalogs. However, there are a number of early systems which have been reclassified following review using improved optical material. For example, Eder et al. (AJ, 102, 572, 1991) found that many of the S0 galaxies which are rich in neutral hydrogen have faint spiral features. The confusion about classification propagates into the discussion of the properties of early-type systems. Attempts to put the classification system on a quantitative basis have in general been unsuccessful. Recently Sandage (private communication) has reviewed the classification of early systems and has defined a set of sub-classes for these objects. The S0 galaxies are divided into three groups, depending on the prominence of the disk. There are six subdivisions of Sa galaxies, depending upon the relative prominence of knots and other arm-like characteristics. We have explored the total gas content in these objects to see if there is a dependence on the galaxy morphology, as denoted by these new subclasses

    A survey of the properties of early-type galaxies

    A compilation of the properties of elliptical and early disk galaxies was completed. In addition to material from the literature, such as Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) fluxes, the compilation includes recent measurements of HI and CO, as well as a review of the x ray properties by Forman and Jones. The data are used to evaluate the gas content of early systems and to search for correlations with x ray emission. The interstellar medium in early-type galaxies is generally dominated by hot interstellar gas (T approx. 10 to the 7th power K; c.f. the review by Fabbiano 1989 and references therein). In addition, a significant fraction of these galaxies show infrared emission (Knapp, et al., 1989), optical emission lines, and visible dust. Sensitive studies in HI and CO of a number of these galaxies have been completed recently, resulting in several detections, particularly of the later types. Researchers wish to understand the connection among these different forms of the interstellar medium, and to examine the theoretical picture of the fate of the hot gas. To do so, they compiled observations of several forms of interstellar matter for a well-defined sample of early-type galaxies. Here they present a statistical analysis of this data base and discuss the implications of the results

    A self-directed learning intervention for radiographers rating mammographic breast density

    Purpose: Subjective methods of mammographic breast density (MBD) assessment are prone to inter-reader variability. This work aims to assess the impact of a short self-directed experiential learning intervention on radiographers’ reproducibility of MBD assessment. Method: The study used two sets of images (test and learning intervention) containing left craniocaudal and left mediolateral oblique views. The test set had MBD ratings from VolparaTM and radiologists using the fourth edition Breast Imaging and Data Systems (BI-RADS®). Seven radiographers rated the MBD of the test set before and after a self-directed learning intervention using the percentage descriptors in the fourth edition BI-RADS® Atlas. The inter-reader agreement, agreement between radiographers and VolparaTM as well as radiologist, was assessed using a Weighted Kappa (Kw). Results: Overall, radiographers’ inter-reader agreement (Kw) was substantial (0.79; 95%CI: 0.70–0.87) before the intervention and almost perfect (0.84; 95%CI: 0.77–0.90) after the intervention. Before the intervention, radiographers demonstrated fair agreement with radiologists (0.24; 95%CI:-0.46–0.61) and VolparaTM (0.24; 95% CI: -0.41–0.59). A fair but slightly improved agreement was also observed between radiographers and radiologists (0.31; 95% CI: -0.33 - 0.64) as well as VolparaTM (0.28; 95% CI: -0.34- 0.61) after the intervention. Conclusion: Findings demonstrate that a short duration self-directed experiential learning intervention reduces inter-reader differences in MBD classification, but has a negligible impact on improving the agreement between inexperienced and expert readers

    Double crystal x-ray diffraction simulations of diffusion in semiconductor microstructures

    Diffusion in group IV, III-V and II-VI semiconductors is an interesting problem not only from a fundamental physics viewpoint but also in practical terms, since it could determine the useful lifetime of a device. Any attempt to control the amount of diffusion in a semiconductor device, whether it be a quantum well structure or not, requires an accurate determination of the diffusion coefficient. The present theoretical study shows that this could be achieved via x-ray diffraction studies in quantum well structures. It is demonstrated that the rocking curves of single quantum wells are not sensitive to diffusion. However the intensity of the first order satellite, which is characteristic of superlattice rocking curves, is strongly dependent upon diffusion and it is proposed that this technique could be used to measure the diffusion coefficient D. © 1998 American Institute of Physics

    The critical current of YBa2Cu3O7-d Low Angle Grain Boundaries

    Transport critical current measurements have been performed on 5 degree [001]-tilt thin film YBa2Cu3O7-delta single grain boundaries with magnetic field rotated in the plane of the film, phi. The variation of the critical current has been determined as a function of the angle between the magnetic field and the grain boundary plane. In applied fields above 1 T the critical current, j_c, is found to be strongly suppressed only when the magnetic field is within an angle phi_k of the grain boundary. Outside this angular range the behavior of the artificial grain boundary is dominated by the critical current of the grains. We show that the phi dependence of j_c in the suppressed region is well described by a flux cutting model.Comment: To be published in PRL, new version with minor changes following referees report

    Faint M-dwarfs and the structure of the Galactic disk

    We use broadband photometry and low-resolution spectra of a complete sample of late-K and M dwarfs brighter than I=22 in three fields at high galactic latitude to study issues relating to galactic structure and large scale abundance gradients in the Galaxy. The observed starcounts in each field are a good match to the predictions of models based on deep starcount data in other intermediate-latitude fields, and these models identify the late-type stars as members of the Galactic disk. Abundances for these late type stars are estimated via narrowband indices that measure the strength of the TiO and CaH bands in their spectra.     Unsupervised grounding of textual descriptions of object features and actions in video

    We propose a novel method for learning visual concepts and their correspondence to the words of a natural language. The concepts and correspondences are jointly inferred from video clips depicting simple actions involving multiple objects, together with corresponding natural language commands that would elicit these actions. Individual objects are first detected, together with quantitative measurements of their colour, shape, location and motion. Visual concepts emerge from the co-occurrence of regions within a measurement space and words of the language. The method is evaluated on a set of videos generated automatically using computer graphics from a database of initial and goal configurations of objects. Each video is annotated with multiple commands in natural language obtained from human annotators using crowd sourcing

    On gravity currents driven by constant fluxes of saline and particle-laden fluid in the presence of a uniform flow

    Experiments are reported on the sustained release of saline and particle-laden fluid\ud into a long, but relatively narrow, flume, filled with fresh water. The dense fluid rapidly\ud spread across the flume and flowed away from the source: the motion was then essentially\ud two-dimensional. In the absence of a background flow in the flume, the motion\ud was symmetric, away from the source. However, in the presence of a background\ud flow the upstream speed of propagation was slowed and the downstream speed was\ud increased. Measurements of this motion are reported and, when the excess density was\ud due to the presence of suspended sediment, the distribution of the deposited particles\ud was also determined. Alongside this experimental programme, new theoretical models\ud of the motion were developed. These were based upon multi-layered depth-averaged\ud shallow-water equations, in which the interfacial drag and mixing processes were\ud explicitly modelled. While the early stages of the motion are independent of these\ud interfacial phenomena to leading order, they play an increasingly important dynamical\ud role as the the flow is slowed, or even arrested. In addition a new integral model is\ud proposed. This does not resolve the interior dynamics of the flow, but may be readily\ud integrated and obviates the need for more lengthy numerical calculations. It is shown\ud that the predictions from both the shallow-layer and integral models are in close\ud agreement with the experimental observations

    Quantum Portfolios

    Quantum computation holds promise for the solution of many intractable problems. However, since many quantum algorithms are stochastic in nature they can only find the solution of hard problems probabilistically. Thus the efficiency of the algorithms has to be characterized both by the expected time to completion {\it and} the associated variance. In order to minimize both the running time and its uncertainty, we show that portfolios of quantum algorithms analogous to those of finance can outperform single algorithms when applied to the NP-complete problems such as 3-SAT.Comment: revision includes additional data and corrects minor typo
