Principal Flow Patterns across renewable electricity networks

Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the nodal injection and line flow patterns in a network model of a future highly renewable European electricity system are investigated. It is shown that the number of principal components needed to describe 95%\% of the nodal power injection variance first increases with the spatial resolution of the system representation. The number of relevant components then saturates at around 76 components for network sizes larger than 512 nodes, which can be related to the correlation length of wind patterns over Europe. Remarkably, the application of PCA to the transmission line power flow statistics shows that irrespective of the spatial scale of the system representation a very low number of only 8 principal flow patterns is sufficient to capture 95%\% of the corresponding spatio-temporal variance. This result can be theoretically explained by a particular alignment of some principal injection patterns with topological patterns inherent to the network structure of the European transmission system

Assessing Dispositions Towards Ridicule and Laughter in the Workplace: Adapting and Validating the PhoPhiKat-9 Questionnaire

The current paper addresses the measurement of three dispositions towards ridicule and laughter; i.e., gelotophobia (the fear of being laughed at), gelotophilia (the joy of being laughed at), and katagelasticism (the joy of laughing at others). These traits explain inter-individual differences in responses to humor, laughter, and social situations related to humorous encounters. First, an ultra-short form of the PhoPhiKat-45 (Ruch & Proyer, 2009) was adapted in two independent samples (Construction Sample N = 157; Replication Sample N = 1774). Second, we tested the validity of the PhoPhiKat-9 in two further independent samples. Results showed that the psychometric properties of the ultra-short form were acceptable and the proposed factor structure could be replicated. In Validation Sample 1 (N = 246), we investigated the relation of the three traits to responses in a ridicule and teasing scenario questionnaire. The results replicated findings from earlier studies by showing that gelotophobes assigned the same emotions to friendly teasing and malicious ridicule (predominantly low joy, high fear, and shame). Gelotophilia was mainly predicted by relating joy to both, teasing and ridicule scenarios, while katagelasticism was predicted by assigning joy and contempt to ridicule scenarios. In Validation Sample 2 (N = 1248), we investigated whether the fear of being laughed at is a vulnerability at the workplace: If friendly teasing and laughter of co-workers, superiors or customers are misperceived as being malicious, individuals may feel less satisfied and more stressed. The results from a representative sample of Swiss employees showed that individuals with a fear of being laughed at are generally less satisfied with life and work and experience more work stress. Moreover, gelotophilia went along with positive evaluations of one’s life and work, while katagelasticism was negatively related to work satisfaction and positively related to work stress. In order to establish good work practices and build procedures against workplace bullying, one needs to consider that individual differences impact on a person’s perception of being bullied and assessing the three dispositions may give important insights into team processes. This publication benefited from the support of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research LIVES – Overcoming vulnerability: Life course perspectives, which is financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (grant number: 51NF40-160590). Benefits from Islanding Green Hydrogen Production

In wind- and solar-dominated energy systems it has been assumed that there are synergies between producing electricity and electrolytic hydrogen since electrolysis can use excess electricity that would otherwise be curtailed. However, it remains unclear whether these synergies hold true at higher levels of hydrogen demand and how they compare with benefits of off-grid, islanded hydrogen production, such as better renewable resources and cost savings on electronics due to relaxed power quality standards. Using a mathematical model across two geographical locations for Germany, Spain, Australia, and Great Britain, we explore trade-offs and synergies between integrated and islanded electrolysers. Below a certain threshold, between 5% and 40% hydrogen share depending on the country, integrated electrolysers offer synergies in flexibility and reduced curtailment. Above these thresholds, islanded electrolysers become more favourable. Without cost advantages, systems including islanded electrolysers in Germany achieve up to 21% lower hydrogen costs than systems with only integrated electrolysers. With 25% island cost advantage, this benefit rises to 40% lower hydrogen costs. Our study identifies three investment regimes with country-specific transition points that vary based on island cost advantages and each country's renewable resources. Based on our results we provide guidelines for countries considering how to deploy electrolysers

Social aspects in organisational cyber-security effectiveness - Of British coal mines, resilience and emergence

    Get PDF
Cyber-security, which plays a key role in all areas of the digital world, from the power grid to healthcare, is mainly addressed from an analytical, engineering perspective. This research looks at social factors impacting real-life cyber-security, and their possible effects, such as resilience and emergence. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 participants from a broad range of international organisations. Their analysis shows that social factors are indeed relevant to cyber-security. Tension within social structures in organisations (e.g., employee-supervisor relationship, and peer pressure within teams) can significantly impact cyber-security effectiveness. The study concludes that cyber-security should be addressed through social-technical system design, in recognition of the fundamental interdependence of social and technical aspects. As a corollary, organisational cyber-security needs to be treated as a so-called wicked problem, for which a reductionist engineering approach is futile. The complexity and ambiguity of cyber-security’s socio-technical challenges calls for adequate principles, ways of thinking and methods

(DIPF/Orig.
