The pi -> pi pi process in nuclei and the restoration of chiral symmetry
The results of an extensive campaign of measurements of the pi -> pi pi
process in the nucleon and nuclei at intermediate energies are presented. The
measurements were motivated by the study of strong pi pi correlations in
nuclei. The analysis relies on the composite ratio C_{pi pi}^A, which accounts
for the clear effect of the nuclear medium on the (pi pi) system. The
comparison of the C_{pi pi}^A distributions for the (pi pi)_{I=J=0} and (pi
pi)_{I=0,J=2} systems to the model predictions indicates that the C_{pi pi}^A
behavior in proximity of the 2m_pi threshold is explainable through the partial
restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclei.Comment: accepted for publication in Nucl. Phys.
The interaction in nuclear matter from a study of the reactions
The pion-production reactions were studied on
, , , and nuclei at an incident pion energy
of =283 MeV. Pions were detected in coincidence using the CHAOS
spectrometer. The experimental results are reduced to differential cross
sections and compared to both theoretical predictions and the reaction phase
space. The composite ratio between the
invariant masses on nuclei and on the nucleon is also presented. Near the
threshold pion pairs couple to when produced in
the reaction channel. There is a marked near-threshold
enhancement of which is consistent with theoretical
predictions addressing the partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear
matter. Furthermore, the behaviour of is well
described when the restoration of chiral symmetry is combined with standard
P-wave renormalization of pions in nuclear matter. On the other hand, nuclear
matter only weakly influences , which displays a flat
behaviour throughout the energy range regardless of .Comment: 30 pages, 16 figures, PS format, accepted for publication in Nucl.

General properties of the pion production reaction in nuclear matter
The pion production reaction on was
studied at incident pion energies of = 240, 260, 280, 300, and
320 MeV. The experiment was performed using the pion-channel at TRIUMF,
and multiparticle events, () and
(), were detected with the CHAOS spectrometer. Results
are reported in the form of both differential and total cross sections, and are
compared to theoretical predictions and the reaction phase space. The present
investigation of the T-dependence of the
reaction complements earlier examinations of the A-dependence of the reaction,
which was measured using , , , , , and
targets at 280 MeV. Some general properties of the
pion-induced pion production reaction in nuclear matter will be presented,
based on the combined results of the two studies.Comment: 23 pages, Latex, accepted for publication in Nucl. Phys.
Serum magnesium and the risk of death from coronary heart disease and sudden cardiac death
Background-Low serum magnesium has been implicated in cardiovascular mortality, but results are conflicting and the pathway is unclear. We studied the association of serum magnesium with coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality and sudden cardiac death (SCD) within the prospective population-based Rotterdam Study, with adjudicated end points and long-term follow-up. Methods and Results-Nine-thousand eight-hundred and twenty participants (mean age 65.1 years, 56.8% female) were included with a median follow-up of 8.7 years. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazard models and found that a 0.1 mmol/L increase in serum magnesium level was associated with a lower risk for CHD mortality (hazard ratio: 0.82, 95% CI 0.70-0.96). Furthermore, we divided serum magnesium in quartiles, with the second and third quartile combined as reference group (0.81-0.88 mmol/L). Low serum magnesium (=0.80 mmol/L) was associated with an increased risk of CHD mortality (N=431, hazard ratio: 1.36, 95% CI 1.09-1.69) and SCD (N=217, hazard ratio: 1.54, 95% CI 1.12-2.11). Low serum magnesium was associated with accelerated subclinical atherosclerosis (expressed as increased carotid intima-media thickness: +0.013 mm, 95% CI 0.005-0.020) and increased QT-interval, mainly through an effect on heart rate (RR-interval: -7.1 ms, 95% CI -13.5 to -0.8). Additional adjustments for carotid intima-media thickness and heart rate did not change the associations with CHD mortality and SCD. Conclusions-Low serum magnesium is associated with an increased risk of CHD mortality and SCD. Although low magnesium was associated with both carotid intima-media thickness and heart rate, this did not explain the relationship between serum magnesium and CHD mortality or SCD. Future studies should focus on why magnesium associates with CHD mortality and SCD and whether intervention reduces these risks

On the Automatic Guidance System with Crab-Steering
Among the steering modes of farm tractor, the crab-steering has hardly been taken up in production and also in research. That mode of steering may be unapplicable to manual operating that has made familiar with normal mode of steering for long time, but because the vehicle with that mode can always hold its body in a certine direction, that type has a profitable property for the automatic guidance in field operation, and positional relation of sensor and implement is one-dimensional problem and attaching point of sensor to body is unrestricted. This type vehicle can not turn, but travelling of field operation necessitates no turning in many kinds of operations except at head land. At head land, it may be solved to change steering mode. The authors aspect to the property of crab-steering and aimed to develop the automatic guidance system with this steering mode. In this paper, the stability of relay-control system of automatic guidance was considered with describing-function method, and the results of tracking tests with trial vehicle were discussed and considered by means of time varying Fourier coefficients of tracking pass
Shockwaves and deep inelastic scattering within the gauge/gravity duality
Within the gauge/gravity correspondence, we discuss the general formulation
of the shockwave metric which is dual to a 'nucleus' described by the
strongly-coupled N=4 SYM theory in the limit where the number of colors Nc is
arbitrarily large. We emphasize that the 'nucleus' must possess Nc^2 degrees of
freedom per unit volume, so like a finite-temperature plasma, in order for a
supergravity description to exist. We critically reassess previous proposals
for introducing transverse inhomogeneity in the shockwave and formulate a new
proposal in that sense, which involves no external source but requires the
introduction of an 'infrared' cutoff which mimics confinement. This cutoff
however plays no role when the shockwave is probed by a highly virtual
projectile, so like in deep inelastic scattering. We consider two such
projectiles, the dilaton and the R-current, and compute the respective
structure functions including unitarity corrections. We find that there are no
leading-twist contributions to the structure functions at high virtuality,
meaning that there are no point-like constituents in the strongly coupled
'nucleus'. In the black-disk regime at low virtuality, the structure functions
are suggestive of parton saturation with occupation numbers of order one. The
saturation momentum Qs grows with the energy like Qs^2 ~ 1/x (with x the
Bjorken variable), which is the hallmark of graviton exchanges and is also
necessary for the fulfillment of the energy-momentum sum rules.Comment: 43 page
Chronic Air Pollution Exposure during Pregnancy and Maternal and Fetal C-Reactive Protein Levels: The Generation R Study
Background: Exposure to air pollution has been associated with higher C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, suggesting an inflammatory response. Not much is known about this association in pregnancy
Twistor Strings with Flavour
We explore the tree-level description of a class of N=2 UV-finite SYM
theories with fundamental flavour within a topological B-model twistor string
framework. In particular, we identify the twistor dual of the Sp(N) gauge
theory with one antisymmetric and four fundamental hypermultiplets, as well as
that of the SU(N) theory with 2N hypermultiplets. This is achieved by suitably
orientifolding/orbifolding the original N=4 setup of Witten and adding a
certain number of new topological 'flavour'-branes at the orientifold/orbifold
fixed planes to provide the fundamental matter. We further comment on the
appearance of these objects in the B-model on CP(3|4). An interesting aspect of
our construction is that, unlike the IIB description of these theories in terms
of D3 and D7-branes, on the twistor side part of the global flavour symmetry is
realised geometrically. We provide evidence for this correspondence by
calculating and matching amplitudes on both sides.Comment: 38+12 pages; uses axodraw.sty. v2: References added, minor

Examining the construct and known-group validity of a composite endpoint for the Older Persons and Informal Caregivers Survey Minimum Data Set (TOPICS-MDS); A largescale data sharing initiative
Background Preference-weighted multi-faceted endpoints have the potential to facilitate comparative effectiveness research that incorporates patient preferences. The Older Persons and Informal Caregivers Survey Composite endpoint (TOPICS-CEP) is potentially a valuable outcome measure for evaluating interventions in geriatric care as it combines multiple outcomes relevant to older persons in a single metric. The objective of this study was to validate TOPICS-CEP across different study settings (general population, primary care and hospital). Methods Data were extracted from TOPICS Minimum Dataset (MDS), a pooled public-access national database with information on older persons throughout the Netherlands. Data of
