    A Single Basis for Developmental Buffering of Drosophila Wing Shape

    The nature of developmental buffering processes has been debated extensively, based on both theoretical reasoning and empirical studies. In particular, controversy has focused on the question of whether distinct processes are responsible for canalization, the buffering against environmental or genetic variation, and for developmental stability, the buffering against random variation intrinsic in developmental processes. Here, we address this question for the size and shape of Drosophila melanogaster wings in an experimental design with extensively replicated and fully controlled genotypes. The amounts of variation among individuals and of fluctuating asymmetry differ markedly among genotypes, demonstrating a clear genetic basis for size and shape variability. For wing shape, there is a high correlation between the amounts of variation among individuals and fluctuating asymmetry, which indicates a correspondence between the two types of buffering. Likewise, the multivariate patterns of shape variation among individuals and of fluctuating asymmetry show a close association. For wing size, however, the amounts of individual variation and fluctuating asymmetry are not correlated. There was a significant link between the amounts of variation between wing size and shape, more so for fluctuating asymmetry than for variation among individuals. Overall, these experiments indicate a considerable degree of shared control of individual variation and fluctuating asymmetry, although it appears to differ between traits

    Performance Evaluation of Manifold Algorithms on a P300 Paradigm Based Online BCI Dataset

    Healthcare field is highly benefited by incorporating BCI for detection and diagnosis of some health related detriment as well as rehabilitation and restoration of certain disabilities. An EEG dataset acquired from 15 high-functioning ASD patients, while they were undergoing a P300 experiment in a virtual reality platform, was analysed in this paper using three algorithms. Performance of Bayes Linear Discriminant Analysis (BLDA) was predominant over Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Random Undersampling (RUS) Boosting. BLDA rendered 73% overall accuracy in predicting target and the best accuracy for each subject using CNN or BLDA yielded an overall accuracy of 76%

    Toward a sustainable eurozone

    We argue that the various proposals aimed at stabilizing the Eurozone using financial engineering do not eliminate the inherent instability of the sovereign bond markets in a monetary union. During crises, this instability becomes systemic and no amount of financial engineering can stabilize an otherwise unstable system. The real stabilization of the Eurozone entails two mechanisms. The first is the willingness of the European Central Bank (ECB) to provide liquidity in the Eurozone sovereign bond markets during times of crisis. The ECB has set up its Outright Monetary Transactions (OMT) program to do this. However, OMT is loaded with austerity conditions, which will be counterproductive when used during recessions, which is when crises generally occur. That is why a second mechanism is necessary, which consists in creating a Eurozone budget

    Holographic Superconductors with Power-Maxwell field

    With the Sturm-Liouville analytical and numerical methods, we investigate the behaviors of the holographic superconductors by introducing a complex charged scalar field coupled with a Power-Maxwell field in the background of dd-dimensional Schwarzschild AdS black hole. We note that the Power-Maxwell field takes the special asymptotical solution near boundary which is different from all known cases. We find that the larger power parameter qq for the Power-Maxwell field makes it harder for the scalar hair to be condensated. We also find that, for different qq, the critical exponent of the system is still 1/2, which seems to be an universal property for various nonlinear electrodynamics if the scalar field takes the form of this paper.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, and 2 table

    A systematic approach to bowing and its application in violin playing

    The aim of this research was to formulate systematic studies for the right-arm to achieve finer outcomes in violin performance. As modern violin practice involves the marking of numerical symbols on the score to indicate left-hand ‘fingerings’ it is necessary to question why no equivalent system is utilised for the training of the right-arm. Although a system for the notation of bow divisions was formulated by French violinist Lucien Capet over one hundred years ago, its use is virtually unidentified in modern violin playing and teaching. The research method adopted in this project was performance-oriented and focused on incorporating Capet’s eight-part bow division notation system into daily analytical practise allowing for core movements of the right-arm and the distribution of the bow to be documented and made habitual for the performance situation. Critical reflections on the process and specifically the application into key performance repertoire are provided in this exegesis, which contextualises the research conducted. The exegesis and folio of performances are equally weighted (50/50) for examination. The associated performance folio contains recordings of various solo and chamber works by composers Bach, Mozart, Ysaÿe, Brahms, Handel, Debussy, Franck, Strauss, Gragnani, Weber, Charlton and De Falla. The findings of this study were that setting parameters for bow distribution generated a higher level of response to address combinations of colour, timbre, mood and articulation. Notation of bow distribution is not to be understood as a rigid barrier or impediment to personal expression. On the contrary, once habitualised, it provides full awareness and control of the right arm, resulting in a refined, and highly nuanced regulation of sound to convey the desired musical expression

    Characterization and Comparison of 2 Distinct Epidemic Community-Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Clones of ST59 Lineage.

    Sequence type (ST) 59 is an epidemic lineage of community-associated (CA) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates. Taiwanese CA-MRSA isolates belong to ST59 and can be grouped into 2 distinct clones, a virulent Taiwan clone and a commensal Asian-Pacific clone. The Taiwan clone carries the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes and the staphylococcal chromosomal cassette mec (SCCmec) VT, and is frequently isolated from patients with severe disease. The Asian-Pacific clone is PVL-negative, carries SCCmec IV, and a frequent colonizer of healthy children. Isolates of both clones were characterized by their ability to adhere to respiratory A549 cells, cytotoxicity to human neutrophils, and nasal colonization of a murine and murine sepsis models. Genome variation was determined by polymerase chain reaction of selected virulence factors and by multi-strain whole genome microarray. Additionally, the expression of selected factors was compared between the 2 clones. The Taiwan clone showed a much higher cytotoxicity to the human neutrophils and caused more severe septic infections with a high mortality rate in the murine model. The clones were indistinguishable in their adhesion to A549 cells and persistence of murine nasal colonization. The microarray data revealed that the Taiwan clone had lost the Ăž3-prophage that integrates into the ÎČ-hemolysin gene and includes staphylokinase- and enterotoxin P-encoding genes, but had retained the genes for human immune evasion, scn and chps. Production of the virulence factors did not differ significantly in the 2 clonal groups, although more α-toxin was expressed in Taiwan clone isolates from pneumonia patients. In conclusion, the Taiwan CA-MRSA clone was distinguished by enhanced virulence in both humans and an animal infection model. The evolutionary acquisition of PVL, the higher expression of α-toxin, and possibly the loss of a large portion of the ÎČ-hemolysin-converting prophage likely contribute to its higher pathogenic potential than the Asian-Pacific clone

However, their forest definition does not reflect ecosystem function or biotic composition. These structural and climatic definitions inflate forest estimates across the tropics and undermine conservation goals, leading to inappropriate management policies and practices in tropical grassy ecosystems

    Determining research knowledge infrastructure for healthcare systems: a qualitative study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study examines research knowledge infrastructures (RKIs) found in health systems. An RKI is defined as any instrument (<it>i.e</it>., programs, interventions, tools) implemented in order to facilitate access, dissemination, exchange, and/or use of evidence in healthcare organisations. Based on an environmental scan (17 key informant interviews) and scoping review (26 studies), we found support for a framework that we developed that outlines components that a health system can have in its RKI. The broad domains are climate for research use, research production, activities used to link research to action, and evaluation.</p> <p>The objective of the current study is to profile the RKI of three types of health system organisations--regional health authorities, primary care practices, and hospitals--in two Canadian provinces to determine the current mix of components these organisations have in their RKI, their experience with these components, and their views about future RKI initiatives.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This study will include semistructured telephone interviews with a purposive sample region of a senior management team member, library/resource centre manager, and a 'knowledge broker' in three regional health authorities, five or six purposively sampled hospitals, and five or six primary care practices in Ontario and Quebec, for a maximum of 71 interviewees. The interviews will explore (a) which RKI components have proven helpful, (b) barriers and facilitators in implementing RKI components, and (c) views about next steps in further development of RKIs.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This is the first qualitative examination of potential RKI efforts that can increase the use of research evidence in health system decision making. We anticipate being able to identify broadly applicable insights about important next steps in building effective RKIs. Some of the identified RKI components may increase the use of research evidence by decision makers, which may then lead to more informed decisions.</p
