    Antiskyrmions stabilized at interfaces by anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

    Chiral magnets are an emerging class of topological matter harbouring localized and topologically protected vortex-like magnetic textures called skyrmions, which are currently under intense scrutiny as a new entity for information storage and processing. Here, on the level of micromagnetics we rigorously show that chiral magnets cannot only host skyrmions but also antiskyrmions as least-energy configurations over all non-trivial homotopy classes. We derive practical criteria for their occurrence and coexistence with skyrmions that can be fulfilled by (110)-oriented interfaces in dependence on the electronic structure. Relating the electronic structure to an atomistic spin-lattice model by means of density-functional calculations and minimizing the energy on a mesoscopic scale applying spin-relaxation methods, we propose a double layer of Fe grown on a W(110) substrate as a practical example. We conjecture that ultrathin magnetic films grown on semiconductor or heavy metal substrates with C2vC_{2v} symmetry are prototype classes of materials hosting magnetic antiskyrmions.Comment: 20 pages (11 pages + 9 pages supplementary material

    Characterization of antibodies for quantitative determination of spiggin protein levels in male and female three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus)

    Spiggin is an adhesive glycoprotein produced in the kidney of sticklebacks during the breeding season and is subsequently secreted into the urinary bladder from where it is employed for nest building. Since the production of the protein has been shown to be under androgenic control, spiggin has been suggested to be a useful biomarker for androgenic substances in the environment. In this study, two polyclonal spiggin antibodies based on synthetic peptides and one polyclonal antibody directed against native spiggin have been characterized. The antibodies ability to identify spiggin was investigated by quantitative immunoassay. For both peptide antibodies the quantification range was determined to be between 1 and 80 ng spiggin and determination of renal spiggin levels from immature and mature males displayed a 15-fold increase in total spiggin content of the kidney resulting in a 6-fold increase in male kidney weight due to hypertrophy. The kidney somatic index (KSI) was found to correlate well with the total renal spiggin content and therefore it appears that KSI in sticklebacks could be used as an initial method to identify substances displaying androgenic effects. Furthermore, western blot analysis revealed that the polyclonal antibodies recognize different spiggin isoforms and that spiggin can be detected in the urinary bladder and kidney of both males and female sticklebacks. In order to develop a quantitative detection method for native spiggin it is necessary to produce a standard that can be used in a bioassay. Due to the adhesive and polymerization characteristics of spiggin the protein is difficult to use as a standard in bioassays. So far spiggin has been shown to exist in at least 14 isoforms, all of which contain polymerization domains. To overcome the solubility problem we have produced recombinant spiggin gamma, with only one polymerization domain, that can be expressed in E. coli. Western blot analysis demonstrated that the polyclonal antibodies were able to detect recombinant spiggin gamma protein in bacterial cell lysate, suggesting that it may be developed into a useful source of standard spiggin to be used for quantitative determination of androgen induced spiggin production in sticklebacks

    Decay dynamics of excitonic polarons in InAs/GaAs quantum dots

Different scattering and luminescence processes were investigated by time-resolved spectroscopy exciting resonantly into the quantum dot’s electronic structure. By studying the characteristic decay times of the ground state and of several phonon-assisted recombinations we were able to distinguish a resonant Raman process from a phonon-assisted photoluminescence process which are always simultaneously present and can interfere with each other. While lifetimes under 30 ps were observed for the coherent Raman process, the incoherent phonon-assisted recombination exhibited typical lifetimes of around 1 ns independently of the excitation energy. We conclude that under resonant excitation the dominant radiative recombination process in this system always involves an electronic state of the ground state of the quantum dot’s electronic structure.     Spirit: Multifunctional Framework for Atomistic Spin Simulations

    The \textit{Spirit} framework is designed for atomic scale spin simulations of magnetic systems of arbitrary geometry and magnetic structure, providing a graphical user interface with powerful visualizations and an easy to use scripting interface. An extended Heisenberg type spin-lattice Hamiltonian including competing exchange interactions between neighbors at arbitrary distance, higher-order exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and dipole-dipole interactions is used to describe the energetics of a system of classical spins localised at atom positions. A variety of common simulations methods are implemented including Monte Carlo and various time evolution algorithms based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of motion, which can be used to determine static ground state and metastable spin configurations, sample equilibrium and finite temperature thermodynamical properties of magnetic materials and nanostructures or calculate dynamical trajectories including spin torques induced by stochastic temperature or electric current. Methods for finding the mechanism and rate of thermally assisted transitions include the geodesic nudged elastic band method, which can be applied when both initial and final states are specified, and the minimum mode following method when only the initial state is given. The lifetime of magnetic states and rate of transitions can be evaluated within the harmonic approximation of transition-state theory. The framework offers performant CPU and GPU parallelizations.     Position determination of resident space objects via triangulation with two passive-optical staring systems

    The number of space objects orbiting the Earth is rapidly increasing. An opportunity to detect and measure the position of space objects are passive optical staring systems, e.g. our system called APPARILLO. While staring systems are capable of measuring highly accurate equatorial coordinates of space objects via an astrometric calibration, they do not provide information on their altitude unless the space object is assumed to fly on a circular orbit. In this work we discuss an approach in which the altitude of a space object is measured via triangulation (simultaneous observation with two staring systems placed at different positions on Earth). Based on theoretical calculations, we estimate that the triangulation with two staring systems can provide the altitude of a typical space object in a low Earth orbit with an accuracy as low as 200 m. This is two orders of magnitude better compared to a simple circular orbit approximation that can be used for a single staring system

    Severe Dengue Virus Infection in Travelers: Risk Factors and Laboratory Indicators

    Background. Dengue fever is the most common arboviral disease in travelers. In countries where dengue virus is endemic, sequential (secondary) infections with different dengue virus serotypes are associated with disease severity. Data on severity and secondary infection rates in a population of travelers are lacking. Methods. Intensified surveillance of dengue fever in travelers was performed within the European Network on Surveillance of Imported Infectious Diseases. Data were collected at 14 European clinical referral centers between 2003 and 2005. Results. A total of 219 dengue virus infections imported from various regions of endemicity were reported. Serological analysis revealed a secondary immune response in 17%. Spontaneous bleeding was observed in 17 (8%) patients and was associated with increased serum alanine and aspartate aminotransferase levels and lower median platelet counts. Two (0.9%) patients fulfilled the World Health Organization (WHO) case definition for dengue hemorrhagic fever. However, 23 (11%) travelers had severe clinical manifestations (internal hemorrhage, plasma leakage, shock, or marked thrombocytopenia). A secondary immune response was significantly associated with both spontaneous bleeding and other severe clinical manifestations. Conclusions. In travelers, severe dengue virus infections are not uncommon but may be missed if the WHO classification is strictly applied. High liver enzyme levels and low platelet counts could serve as indicators of disease severit

    Molecular surveillance of drug resistance through imported isolates of Plasmodium falciparum in Europe

    BACKGROUND: Results from numerous studies point convincingly to correlations between mutations at selected genes and phenotypic resistance to antimalarials in Plasmodium falciparum isolates. In order to move molecular assays for point mutations on resistance-related genes into the realm of applied tools for surveillance, we investigated a selection of P. falciparum isolates that were imported during the year 2001 into Europe to study the prevalence of resistance-associated point mutations at relevant codons. In particular, we tested for parasites which were developing resistance to antifolates and chloroquine. The screening results were used to map the prevalence of mutations and, thus, levels of potential drug resistance in endemic areas world-wide. RESULTS: 337 isolates have been tested so far. Prevalence of mutations that are associated with resistance to chloroquine on the pfcrt and pfmdr genes of P. falciparum was demonstrated at high levels. However, the prevalence of mutations associated with resistance to antifolates at the DHFR and DHPS genes was unexpectedly low, rarely exceeding 60% in endemic areas. CONCLUSIONS: Constant screening of imported isolates will enable TropNetEurop to establish a screening tool for emerging resistance in endemic areas

    Screening for Mutations Related to Atovaquone/ Proguanil Resistance in Treatment Failures and Other Imported Isolates of Plasmodium falciparum in Europe

    Background. Two single-point mutations of the Plasmodium falciparum cytochrome b gene (Tyr268Asn and Tyr268Ser) were recently reported in cases of atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone) treatment failure. However, little is known about the prevalence of codon-268 mutations and their quantitative association with treatment failure. Methods. We set out to assess the prevalence of codon-268 mutations in P. falciparum isolates imported into Europe and to quantify their association with atovaquone/proguanil treatment failure. Isolates of P. falciparum collected by the European Network on Imported Infectious Disease Surveillance between April 2000 and August 2003 were analyzed for codon-268 mutations, by use of polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment-length polymorphism. Results. We successfully screened 504 samples for the presence of either Tyr268Ser or Tyr268Asn. One case of Ser268 and no cases of Asn268 were detected. Therefore, we can be 95% confident that the prevalence of Ser268 in the European patient pool does not exceed 0.96% and that Asn268 is less frequent than 0.77%. In 58 patients treated with atovaquone/proguanil, Tyr268Ser was present in 1 of 5 patients with treatment failure but in 0 of 53 successfully treated patients. Conclusions. Tyr268Ser seems to be a sufficient, but not a necessary, cause for atovaquone/proguanil treatment failure.
