Multidimensional perfectionism and assortative mating: A perfect date?

    Get PDF
Assortative mating has been found regarding personality traits, personal attitudes and values, and cognitive abilities, but so far no study has investigated assortative mating regarding multidimensional perfectionism. A total of 422 participants from a non-commercial panel (mean age = 36.0 years) completed measures of self-oriented, other-oriented, and socially prescribed perfectionism and rated the attractiveness of four potential dating partners (“dates”): a self-oriented, an other-oriented, a socially prescribed, and a non-perfectionist date. Results showed that all perfectionist dates were seen as less attractive than the non-perfectionist date. This effect, however, was moderated by self-oriented and other-oriented perfectionism. Participants high in self-oriented perfectionism found all three perfectionist dates more attractive than participants low in self-oriented perfections. Participants high in other-oriented perfectionism found the self-oriented perfectionist date more attractive, and the non-perfectionist date less attractive than participants low in other-oriented perfectionism. The findings are discussed with respect to assortative mating, the social disconnection model of perfectionism, and the heritability of perfectionism

Consumption, Wealth and Business Cycles in Germany

This paper studies the long-run relationship between consumption, asset wealth and income in Germany, based on data from 1980 to 2003. While earlier studies — mostly for the Anglo-Saxon economies — have generally documented that departures of these three variables from their common trend signal changes in asset prices, we find that for Germany they predict changes in income. Asset price changes are found to have virtually no effect on consumption — both in the short as well as in the long-run. We offer an explanation of this finding that emphasizes differences between the bank-based German financial system and the rather market-based Anglo-American system: stock ownership by private households is much less widespread in Germany than in the Anglo-Saxon economies and the share of publicly traded equity in household wealth is much smaller in Germany than in the U.S., the UK or Australia.wealth effect on consumption, business cycles, monetary policy transmission, financial systems, asset price predictability, permanent income hypothesis

Stochasticity & Predictability in Terrestrial Planet Formation

Terrestrial planets are thought to be the result of a vast number of gravitational interactions and collisions between smaller bodies. We use numerical simulations to show that practically identical initial conditions result in a wide array of final planetary configurations. This is a result of the chaotic evolution of trajectories which are highly sensitive to minuscule displacements. We determine that differences between systems evolved from virtually identical initial conditions can be larger than the differences between systems evolved from very different initial conditions. This implies that individual simulations lack predictive power. For example, there is not a reproducible mapping between the initial and final surface density profiles. However, some key global properties can still be extracted if the statistical spread across many simulations is considered. Based on these spreads, we explore the collisional growth and orbital properties of terrestrial planets which assemble from different initial conditions (we vary the initial planetesimal distribution, planetesimal masses, and giant planet orbits). Confirming past work, we find that the resulting planetary systems are sculpted by sweeping secular resonances. Configurations with giant planets on eccentric orbits produce fewer and more massive terrestrial planets on tighter orbits than those with giants on circular orbits. This is further enhanced if the initial mass distribution is biased to the inner regions. In all cases, the outer edge of the system is set by the final location of the ν6\nu_6 resonance and we find that the mass distribution peaks at the ν5\nu_5 resonance. Using existing observations, we find that extrasolar systems follow similar trends. Although differences between our numerical modelling and exoplanetary systems remain, we suggest that CoRoT-7, HD 20003, and HD 20781 may host undetected giant planets.Comment: replaced to match published version, 20 pages, 11 figures, published in MNRAS, simulation outputs available at https://cheleb.net/astro/sp15

Evaluation Of Data-Based, Service-Oriented Business Models For Machine Tool Manufacturers

    Get PDF
The potential of data utilization in the manufacturing industry enables companies to develop new service offerings for their customers. This creates an opportunity for manufacturers of machine tools and their components to implement innovative, service-oriented business models. These business opportunities can open new sources of revenue and optimize the economic performance of a company. A development of innovative, data-based and service-oriented business approaches involves a number of paradigm shifts for traditionally product-centred machine tool manufacturers. However, a large proportion of companies in the industry only have very limited know-how in data utilization. As a result, most of the projects initiated in the industry to develop data-based service offerings fail. Besides problems with the available database, a lack of understanding of the business approach and a failure to assess the entrepreneurial feasibility of offerings are the main causes of failure. This paper presents an approach to evaluating data-based, service-oriented business models for machine tool manufacturers. Starting with an overview of the state of the art in business models and data-based applications in production, the special features of data-based business models are examined. In doing so, the paradigm shift from an analogue, product-centric to a data-based, service-oriented business model is highlighted. Based on this, requirements for the method are derived and its place in the development process of business models is defined. After a presentation of the developed method, it is finally applied in a practical example of a manufacturer for milling machines

    Rogue waves and entropy consumption

    Get PDF
Based on data from the Japan Sea and the North Sea the occurrence of rogue waves is analyzed by a scale dependent stochastic approach, which interlinks fluctuations of waves for different spacings. With this approach we are able to determine a stochastic cascade process, which provides information of the general multipoint statistics. Furthermore the evolution of single trajectories in scale, which characterize wave height fluctuations in the surroundings of a chosen location, can be determined. The explicit knowledge of the stochastic process enables to assign entropy values to all wave events. We show that for these entropies the integral fluctuation theorem, a basic law of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, is valid. This implies that positive and negative entropy events must occur. Extreme events like rogue waves are characterized as negative entropy events. The statistics of these entropy fluctuations changes with the wave state, thus for the Japan Sea the statistics of the entropies has a more pronounced tail for negative entropy values, indicating a higher probability of rogue waves.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
