Fracture strength and Young's modulus of ZnO nanowires
The fracture strength of ZnO nanowires vertically grown on sapphire
substrates was measured in tensile and bending experiments. Nanowires with
diameters between 60 and 310 nm and a typical length of 2 um were manipulated
with an atomic force microscopy tip mounted on a nanomanipulator inside a
scanning electron microscope. The fracture strain of (7.7 +- 0.8)% measured in
the bending test was found close to the theoretical limit of 10% and revealed a
strength about twice as high as in the tensile test. From the tensile
experiments the Young's modulus could be measured to be within 30% of that of
bulk ZnO, contrary to the lower values found in literature.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Lineshape of the thermopower of quantum dots
Quantum dots are an important model system for thermoelectric phenomena, and
may be used to enhance the thermal-to-electric energy conversion efficiency in
functional materials. It is therefore important to obtain a detailed
understanding of a quantum-dot's thermopower as a function of the Fermi energy.
However, so far it has proven difficult to take effects of co-tunnelling into
account in the interpretation of experimental data. Here we show that a
single-electron tunnelling model, using knowledge of the dot's electrical
conductance which in fact includes all-order co-tunneling effects, predicts the
thermopower of quantum dots as a function of the relevant energy scales, in
very good agreement with experiment.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
A disrupted circumstellar torus inside eta Carinae's Homunculus Nebula
We present thermal infrared images of the bipolar nebula surrounding eta
Carinae at six wavelengths from 4.8 to 24.5 microns. These were obtained with
the MIRAC3 camera system at the Magellan Observatory. Our images reveal new
intricate structure in the bright core of the nebula, allowing us to
re-evaluate interpretations of morphology seen in images with lower resolution.
Complex structures in the core might not arise from a pair of overlapping rings
or a cool (110 K) and very massive dust torus, as has been suggested recently.
Instead, it seems more likely that the arcs and compact knots comprise a warm
(350 K) disrupted torus at the intersection of the larger polar lobes. Some of
the arcs appear to break out of the inner core region, and may be associated
with equatorial features seen in optical images. The torus could have been
disrupted by a post-eruption stellar wind, or by ejecta from the Great Eruption
itself if the torus existed before that event. Kinematic data are required to

Direct measurement of molecular stiffness and damping in confined water layers
We present {\em direct} and {\em linear} measurements of the normal stiffness
and damping of a confined, few molecule thick water layer. The measurements
were obtained by use of a small amplitude (0.36 ), off-resonance
Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) technique. We measured stiffness and damping
oscillations revealing up to 7 layers separated by 2.56 0.20
. Relaxation times could also be calculated and were found to
indicate a significant slow-down of the dynamics of the system as the confining
separation was reduced. We found that the dynamics of the system is determined
not only by the interfacial pressure, but more significantly by solvation
effects which depend on the exact separation of tip and surface. Thus `
solidification\rq seems to not be merely a result of pressure and confinement,
but depends strongly on how commensurate the confining cavity is with the
molecule size. We were able to model the results by starting from the simple
assumption that the relaxation time depends linearly on the film stiffness.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, will be submitted to PR
Oxygen dynamics in choanosomal sponge explants
Oxygen microprofiles were measured over the boundary layer and into the tissue of 10-day-old cultivated tissue fragments (explants of 2–4 cm3) from the choanosome of the cold-water sponge Geodia barretti with oxygen-sensitive Clark-type microelectrodes. At this time of cultivation, the surface tissue and the aquiferous system of the explants is regenerating, which makes oxygen and nutrient supply by pumping activity impossible. Oxygen profiles showed a parabolic shape, indicating oxygen flux over a diffusive boundary layer and into the tissue. Oxygen was always depleted only 1 mm below the sponge surface, leaving the major part of the explants anoxic. Diffusive oxygen flux into the explant was calculated from three oxygen profiles using Fick's first law of diffusion and revealed 9 μmol O2 cm−3 day−1, which is in the lower range of in situ oxygen consumption of whole sponges. The ability of G. barretti to handle continuous tissue anoxia enables choanosomal explants to survive the critical first weeks of cultivation without a functional aquiferous system, when oxygen is supplied to the sponge explant by molecular diffusion over its surface
Multicenter-study of operative treatment of intraligamentous tears of the anterior cruciate ligament in children and adolescents: Comparison of four different techniques
Tears of the anterior cruciate ligament in skeletally immature patients were operated with four different methods and their outcome compared to each other. Sixty-eight patients (33 males, 35 females), mean 12.5years, were treated in four different centers from 1984 to 2001. Twenty-eight patients underwent the ACL-reconstruction with hamstring grafts, 16 patients with bone-patella-bone autografts, 12 patients with quadriceps grafts and 12 patients with facia lata. The mean follow-up was 32months. Postoperative evaluation included radiographs, KT-1000/2000 stability measurements, Lysholm score, The Tegner activity scale and IKDC score. Neither leg length discrepancy nor angular deformities were noted. Mean KT-1000 difference was 2.1mm, mean postoperative Lysholm knee score 93.3, IKDC 87% normal or nearly normal. The Tegner index decreased from 6.6 to 5.7. In total, six patients developed instability due to an adequate trauma 1year after the index operation. Two patients showed mild arthrotic changes. All but two patients were able to return to the same level of preoperative sports participation. None of the four methods studied showed major differences in outcome compared to the other. Reduction of heat sink common-mode currents in switching mode power supply circuits
In this paper, a new filter design for a heat sink is presented. The
parasitic couplings between electric power devices and the heat sink are
responsible for common-mode currents. The main focus is on the reduction of
these currents to reduce the heat sink radiation. For this purpose a new
filter design is proposed. In addition, experimental results are shown to
validate the proposed filter
