Stellar Polarimetry: Where Are We and Where Are We Going?
On the final day of the Stellar Polarimetry conference, participants split up
into three "breakout sessions" to discuss the future of the field in the areas
of instrumentation, upcoming opportunities, and community priorities. This
contribution compiles the major recommendations arising from each breakout
session. We hope that the polarimetric community will find these ideas useful

Age at First Concussion Influences Number of Subsequent Concussions
Background: Individuals that sustain their first concussion during childhood may be at greater risk for sustaining multiple concussions throughout their lifetime, due to a longer window of vulnerability. Purpose: To estimate the association between age at first concussion with number of subsequent concussions. Methods: A total of 23,582 collegiate athletes from 26 universities and military cadets from three military academies completed a concussion history questionnaire (65% males, age: 19.9±1.4years). Participants self-reported concussions and age at time of each injury. Participants with a history of concussion (n=3,647, 15.5%) were categorized as having sustained their first concussion during childhood (<10 years old - yo) or adolescence (≥10yo & ≤18yo). Poisson regression was used to model age group (childhood, adolescence) predicting number of subsequent concussions (0, 1, 2+). A second Poisson regression was developed to determine whether age at first concussion predicted number of subsequent concussions. Results: Participants self-reporting their first concussion during childhood had an increased risk of sustaining subsequent concussions (RR=2.19, 95% CI: 1.82, 2.64) compared to participants self-reporting their first concussion during adolescence. For every one-year increase in age at first concussion, we observed a 16% reduction in the risk of subsequent concussion (RR=0.84, 95% CI:0.82,0.86). Conclusion(s): Individuals self-reporting a concussion at a young age sustained a higher number of concussions prior to the age of 18. Concussion prevention, recognition, and reporting strategies are of particular need at the youth level

The effects of administering different metaphylactic antimicrobials on growth performance and health outcomes of high-risk, newly received feedlot steers
Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the primary animal health concern facing feedlot producers. Many antimicrobial mitigation strategies are available, but few studies have compared feedlot performance during both the receiving and finishing periods following application of different antimicrobials used as metaphylaxis at arrival. The objective of this study was to compare antimicrobial metaphylaxis methods on clinical health and growth performance across both the receiving and finishing periods. A total of 238 multiple-sourced steers in two source blocks were used in a generalized complete block design. The four treatments included: 1) a negative control, 5 mL of sterile saline injected subcutaneously (CON); 2) subcutaneous administration of florfenicol at 40 mg/kg of BW (NUF); 3) subcutaneous administration of ceftiofur in the posterior aspect of the ear at 6.6 mg/kg of BW (EXC); and 4) subcutaneous administration of tulathromycin at 2.5 mg/kg of BW (DRA). The morbidity rate for the first treatment of BRD was decreased for the DRA and EXC treatments compared to CON and NUF (P \u3c 0.01). Additionally, average daily gain (ADG), dry matter intake (DMI), and gain-to-feed (G:F) were greater (P ≤ 0.02) in the DRA treatment during the receiving period compared to all other treatments. The ADG was also greater (P \u3c 0.05) for EXC than the CON treatment throughout the finishing period. Nonetheless, other growth performance variables did not differ among metaphylactic treatments during the finishing period (P ≥ 0.14). Likewise, no differences in carcass characteristics or liver abscess score were observed (P ≥ 0.18). All complete blood count (CBC) variables were affected by day (P ≤ 0.01) except mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (P = 0.29). Treatment × time interactions were observed for platelet count, white blood cell (WBC) count, monocyte count and percentage, and lymphocyte percentage (P ≤ 0.03). However, there were no observed hematological variables that differed among treatment (P ≥ 0.10). The results indicate that some commercially available antimicrobials labeled for metaphylactic use are more efficacious than others in decreasing morbidity rate
Normative Parameters of Gastrocnemius Muscle Stiffness and Associations with Patient Characteristics and Function
# Background
Quantifying muscle stiffness may aid in the diagnosis and management of individuals with muscle pathology. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to establish normative parameters and variance estimates of muscle stiffness in the gastrocnemius muscle in a resting and contracted state. A secondary aim was to identify demographic, anthropometric, medical history factors, and biomechanical factors related to muscle stiffness.
# Methods
Stiffness of the gastrocnemius muscle was measured in both a resting and contracted state in 102 asymptomatic individuals in this cross-sectional study. Differences based on muscle state (resting vs contracted) and sex (female vs male) were assessed using a 2 X 2 analysis of variance (ANOVA). Associations between muscle stiffness and sex, age, BMI, race, exercise frequency, exercise duration, force production, and step length were assessed using correlation analysis.
# Results
Gastrocnemius muscle stiffness significantly increased from a resting to a contracted state . In addition, muscles stiffness was 35% greater for males than females in a resting state and 76% greater in a contracted state. Greater muscle stiffness in a relaxed and contracted state was associated with larger plantarflexion force production (*r* = .26, p < 0.01 and *r* = .23, p < 0.01 respectively).
# Conclusion
Identifying normative parameters and variance estimates of muscle stiffness in asymptomatic individuals may help guide diagnosing and managing individuals with aberrant muscle function.

*What is known about the subject:* Muscle stiffness has been shown to be related to individuals with pathology such as Achilles tendinopathy; however, research is sparse regarding normative values of muscle stiffness. Measuring muscle stiffness may also be a way to potentially predict individuals prone to injury or to monitor the effectiveness of management strategies.
*What this study adds to existing knowledge:* This study establishes defined estimates of muscle stiffness of the gastrocnemius in both a relaxed and contracted state in healthy individuals. Modeling the Optical to Ultraviolet Polarimetric Variability from Thomson Scattering in Colliding-wind Binaries

Massive-star binaries are critical laboratories for measuring masses and stellar wind mass-loss rates. A major challenge is inferring viewing inclination and extracting information about the colliding-wind interaction (CWI) region. Polarimetric variability from electron scattering in the highly ionized winds provides important diagnostic information about system geometry. We combine for the first time the well-known generalized treatment of Brown et al. for variable polarization from binaries with the semianalytic solution for the geometry and surface density CWI shock interface between the winds based on Cantó et al. Our calculations include some simplifications in the form of inverse-square law wind densities and the assumption of axisymmetry, but in so doing they arrive at several robust conclusions. One is that when the winds are nearly equal (e.g., O+O binaries) the polarization has a relatively mild decline with binary separation. Another is that despite Thomson scattering being a gray opacity, the continuum polarization can show chromatic effects at ultraviolet wavelengths but will be mostly constant at longer wavelengths. Finally, when one wind dominates the other, as, for example, in WR+OB binaries, the polarization is expected to be larger at wavelengths where the OB component is more luminous and generally smaller at wavelengths where the WR component is more luminous. This behavior arises because, from the perspective of the WR star, the distortion of the scattering envelope from spherical is a minor perturbation situated far from the WR star. By contrast, the polarization contribution from the OB star is dominated by the geometry of the CWI shock
Congenital anomalies in low- and middle-income countries: the unborn child of global surgery.
Surgically correctable congenital anomalies cause a substantial burden of global morbidity and mortality. These anomalies disproportionately affect children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to sociocultural, economic, and structural factors that limit the accessibility and quality of pediatric surgery. While data from LMICs are sparse, available evidence suggests that the true human and financial cost of congenital anomalies is grossly underestimated and that pediatric surgery is a cost-effective intervention with the potential to avert significant premature mortality and lifelong disability
Metaphylactic antimicrobial effects on occurrences of antimicrobial resistance in \u3ci\u3eSalmonella enterica, Escherichia coli\u3c/i\u3e and \u3ci\u3eEnterococcus\u3c/i\u3e spp. measured longitudinally from feedlot arrival to harvest in high-risk beef cattle
Aims: Our objective was to determine how injectable antimicrobials affected populations of Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp. in feedlot cattle.
Methods and Results: Two arrival date blocks of high-risk crossbred beef cattle (n = 249; mean BW = 244 kg) were randomly assigned one of four antimicrobial treatments administered on day 0: sterile saline control (CON), tulathromycin (TUL), ceftiofur (CEF) or florfenicol (FLR). Faecal samples were collected on days 0, 28, 56, 112, 182 and study end (day 252 for block 1 and day 242 for block 2). Hide swabs and subiliac lymph nodes were collected the day before and the day of harvest. Samples were cultured for antimicrobial-resistant Salmonella, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp. The effect of treatment varied by day across all targeted bacterial populations (p ≤ 0.01) except total E. coli. Total E. coli counts were greatest on days 112, 182 and study end (p ≤ 0.01). Tulathromycin resulted in greater counts and prevalence of Salmonella from faeces than CON at study end (p ≤ 0.01). Tulathromycin and CEF yielded greater Salmonella hide prevalence and greater counts of 128ERYR E. coli at study end than CON (p ≤ 0.01). No faecal Salmonella resistant to tetracyclines or third-generation cephalosporins were detected. Ceftiofur was associated with greater counts of 8ERYR Enterococcus spp. at study end (p ≤ 0.03). By the day before harvest, antimicrobial use did not increase prevalence or counts for all other bacterial populations compared with CON (p ≥ 0.13).
Conclusions: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in feedlot cattle is not caused solely by using a metaphylactic antimicrobial on arrival, but more likely a multitude of environmental and management factors
UV Spectropolarimetry with Polstar: Massive Star Binary Colliding Winds
The winds of massive stars are important for their direct impact on the
interstellar medium, and for their influence on the final state of a star prior
to it exploding as a supernova. However, the dynamics of these winds is
understood primarily via their illumination from a single central source. The
Doppler shift seen in resonance lines is a useful tool for inferring these
dynamics, but the mapping from that Doppler shift to the radial distance from
the source is ambiguous. Binary systems can reduce this ambiguity by providing
a second light source at a known radius in the wind, seen from orbitally
modulated directions. From the nature of the collision between the winds, a
massive companion also provides unique additional information about wind
momentum fluxes. Since massive stars are strong ultraviolet (UV) sources, and
UV resonance line opacity in the wind is strong, UV instruments with a high
resolution spectroscopic capability are essential for extracting this dynamical
information. Polarimetric capability also helps to further resolve ambiguities
in aspects of the wind geometry that are not axisymmetric about the line of
sight, because of its unique access to scattering direction information. We
review how the proposed MIDEX-scale mission Polstar can use UV
spectropolarimetric observations to critically constrain the physics of
colliding winds, and hence radiatively-driven winds in general. We propose a
sample of 20 binary targets, capitalizing on this unique combination of
illumination by companion starlight, and collision with a companion wind, to
probe wind attributes over a range in wind strengths. Of particular interest is
the hypothesis that the radial distribution of the wind acceleration is altered
significantly, when the radiative transfer within the winds becomes optically
