    Get PDF
This is a study of the distinctive characteristics, activities, challenges and opportunities of a specific type of sustainability institute, one that spans the many disciplines of the university and, to do so, reports to upper administration (provost or vice president of research). Among research universities within the Association of American Universities (AAU), 19 were identified, and 18 agreed to participate in this study. Directors are sent a 71-question survey in January 2017 that covered issues of Governance, Research, Education, Engagement, Campus Operations and Best Practices

Framing Hamas: a case study of U.S. foreign policy and media coverage

    Get PDF
Officials of the United States government have, at least rhetorically, made peace in the Middle East a priority in every administration for the six decades. However, despite the premium being placed on peace agreements, foreign policy enacted by the United States often seems to be focused on more short-sighted goals, often at the expense of long-term peace. In no case is this truer than with standing policies regarding Hamas. These policies have failed to bring the Palestinians and Israelis any closer to a peace agreement. If policies fail to achieve their stated goals, one must ask why they remain in place. A number of studies have been undertaken over the years to explain U.S. policy in the Middle East. These studies have focused on everything from Cold War politics, to the oil market, and the Israel lobby. This thesis will examine an often overlooked factor: the relationship between domestic American media coverage and the foreign policy apparatus of the United States government. The thesis will show that the government and the media both act upon one another in a way that keeps them both locked into the status quo. Theories such as framing, indexing, cascading activation, hegemony, culturally congruent frames, and the CNN effect will all be used to analyze the relationship and its impact on foreign policy formation

Changes in the Ideal Body Type

    Get PDF
The human body comes in all shapes and sizes. Each different body shape allows onlookers to evaluate at least some aspects of the subject’s lifestyle and priorities. All eras choose a body type that they exalt above the rest. The goal of this research is to evaluate the considered ideal body type from three different eras in order to better understand these time periods and their values. A compilation of books and journal articles were used from the Cunningham Memorial Library Database, the library itself, and other personal libraries to better understand this topic. The most pertinent question was what Sparta, Medieval Europe, and the 1920’s in the United States considered to be the ideal body type. From here a comparison between the time periods and their values was needed to understand why these ideal body styles differ so greatly. Lastly, a record of events that happened during each reign was needed so understand the external factors acting upon the choosing of the body styles. These findings can be used to deeper understand history, sociology, body image, and reproduction.Kayla SiddellHonors DiplomaHonors CollegeCunningham Memorial Library, Terre Haute, Indiana State UniversityUndergraduateTitle from document title page. Sudden cardiac death in a young man with massive left ventricular pseudoaneurysm

Introduction: Left ventricular (LV) pseudoaneurysm (PA) is a known complication of myocardial infarction and rarely, mitral valve (MV) replacement surgery or endocarditis. PAs are prone to rupture with a 50% mortality rate if untreated. We report a case of sudden cardiac death associated with massive, unruptured LVPA complicating prosthetic valve endocarditis. Case: A 28 year-old male with a history of intravenous drug abuse and MVreplacement for infective endocarditis presented with signs of congestive heart failure. A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) and computed tomography revealed a MV abscess, prosthetic MV insufficiency with vegetations and an extracardiac mass, possibly a LVPA. On day three, he suffered sudden onset of shortness of breath, became unresponsive, and was not resuscitated. At autopsy, the posterior-inferior surface of the heart was effaced by a massive pericardial mass compressing and displacing the normal cardiac anatomy, but was intact without evidence of rupture. There was no evidence of pulmonary embolism, but the bioprosthesis was completely destroyed. A fistula beneath the MV annulus led into the pericardial space, which contained organized thrombus with areas of fresh blood. Microscopic studies confirmed the diagnosis of LVPA. Discussion: This case illustrates an exceptional example of how the clinical suspicion for cause of death was refuted by pathological evidence and reinforces the need for pathological confirmation despite highly likely clinical suspicions. The clinical team worked closely with the pathology team to determine the potential cause of death, a cooperative endeavor that will desirably be a model for future interactions to improve patient care

The Small Molecule Antipsychotic Aripiprazole Potentiates Ozone-Induced Inflammation in Airway Epithelium

Inhaled ground level ozone (O3) has well described adverse health effects, which may be augmented in susceptible populations. While conditions, such as pre-existing respiratory disease, have been identified as factors enhancing susceptibility to O3-induced health effects, the potential for drug x pollutant interactions in sensitizing populations or further exacerbating preexisting conditions has not yet been studied. In the airway, inhaled O3 is able to interact with the lipid rich airway lining to generate reactive and electrophilic oxysterol species capable of causing cellular dysfunction and inflammation. Therefore, drugs which modify cholesterol synthesis could play a deleterious biological role in the presence of O3. Recent chemical analysis studies established the capacity for a variety of small molecule antipsychotic drugs, like Aripiprazole (APZ), to elevate circulating 7-dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC) levels by competitively inhibiting 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase, the enzyme involved in the final step of cholesterol biosynthesis. 7-DHC serves as a highly reactive target for lipid peroxidation and increased oxidative stress. Our results show that APZ administered at clinically relevant concentrations increase 7-DHC levels and potentiate O3-induced pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in airway epithelial cells. Additionally, we find that ozonized 7-DHC enhances IL-8 expression more than ozonized cholesterol. Overall, the evidence we provide describes a potential mechanistic basis for a drug x pollutant interaction between APZ and O3, posing significant adverse public health implications considering the prevalence of O3 and APZ use.Bachelor of Scienc

Application of an Extremal Result of Erdős and Gallai to the (n,k,t) Problem

An extremal result about vertex covers, attributed by Hajnal to Erdős and Gallai, is applied to prove the following: If n, k, and t are integers satisfying n ≥ k ≥ t ≥ 3 and k ≤ 2t - 2, and G is a graph with the minimum number of edges among graphs on n vertices with the property that every induced subgraph on k vertices contains a complete subgraph on t vertices, then every component of G is complete

Adriaen van Ostade's Images of Idyllic Rural Life

    Get PDF
Seventeenth-century Dutch artist Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) created paintings of rural life that exude life and vitality. The artist devoted hundreds of canvases and panels to depicting rural folk enjoying a dance or a drink, singing songs, and enjoying the pleasures of the pipe. Though he inherited many aspects of the peasant genre tradition from predecessors such as Pieter Bruegel (c.1525-1569), Ostade, a lifelong resident of Haarlem, developed his own type of peasant image by depicting leisure activities in small inns and taverns that presented a sympathetic view of rural inhabitants. Ostade's mature paintings of festive country folk relied on preconceived notions about the peace and beauty of Haarlem's rural environs and were meant to enhance the idea of a peaceful rural escape for urban viewers. Through a critical examination of Ostade's oeuvre, I will compile a coherent and detailed look at the images of rural festivity that Ostade created throughout his long career. Ostade transformed traditional rollicking kermis scenes into subdued, leisurely celebrations focused on simple interactions along with singing and dancing. He changed the traditional stereotype of the festive peasant from a brutish, crude figure into a rustic, yet idyllic, rural fixture. The content people Ostade depicted in his mature work reflect the desires of an urban bourgeois class in Haarlem that prized their city's rural environs, which had long been extolled in literature and art. A thorough study of the works and the market for which they were produced illuminates the meaning and function of his animated pictures of rural life. &#8195
