The Illawarra at Work: A Summary of the Major Findings of the Illawarra Regional Workplace Industrial Relations Survey
This paper summarises the main results of the Illawarra Regional Workplace Industrial Relations Survey (IRWIRS). The data is unique in that it provides the only comprehensive and statistically reliable source of information about workplace employee relations at the regional level in Australia, and compares regional patterns with national trends. The data collected relates to industrial relations indicators, workplace ownership, market conditions, management organisation and decision- making in the workplace, among other things. The results reveal a positive pattern of employment relations in the Illawarra, distinctive in many respects from national trends.Illawarra Regional Workplace Industrial Relations Survey, workplace employee relations, Australia
Beyond crime rates and community surveys: A new approach to police accountability and performance measurement
In this conceptual piece, we argue that the current approach to police performance measurement typically based on the use of traditional police metrics has failed to achieve the desired results and that a different strategy is required. Traditional police metrics have a narrow focus on crime and the police response to it. They provide little information on how well police organizations are performing. Importantly, traditional police metrics do not incorporate input from police stakeholders in goal identification, nor do they use specifically designed indicators to assess progress towards achieving these goals. Following an analysis of the criticisms levelled at the use of traditional police metrics, and subsequent attempts to address these issues, we argue that a networked governance approach represents a more promising foundation for undertaking police organizational performance assessment. Such an approach would engage stakeholders more directly in goal identification and performance assessment, and potentially lead to more successful, responsive and accountable policing
Perspective: Current advances in solid-state NMR spectroscopy
In contrast to the rapid and revolutionary impact of solution-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) on modern chemistry, the field of solid-state NMR has matured more slowly. This reflects the major technical challenges of much reduced spectral resolution and sensitivity in solid-state as compared to solution-state spectra, as well as the relative complexity of the solid state. In this perspective, we outline the technique developments that have pushed resolution to intrinsic limits and the approaches, including ongoing major developments in the field of Dynamic Nuclear Polarisation, that have enhanced spectral sensitivity. The information on local structure and dynamics that can be obtained using these gains in sensitivity and resolution is illustrated with a diverse range of examples from large biomolecules to energy materials and pharmaceuticals and from both ordered and highly disordered materials. We discuss how parallel developments in quantum chemical calculation, particularly density functional theory, have enabled experimental data to be translated directly into information on local structure and dynamics, giving rise to the developing field of “NMR crystallography
Spatiotemporal dispersion and wave envelopes with relativistic and pseudorelativistic characteristics
A generic nonparaxial model for pulse envelopes is presented. Classic Schro¨dinger-type descriptions of
wave propagation have their origins in slowly-varying envelopes combined with a Galilean boost to the
local time frame. By abandoning these two simplifications, a picture of pulse evolution emerges in which
frame-of-reference considerations and space-time transformations take center stage. A wide range of
effects, analogous to those in special relativity, then follows for both linear and nonlinear systems. Explicit
demonstration is presented through exact bright and dark soliton pulse solutions
Synthesis and biological evaluation of 1,2-disubsubstituted 4-quinolone analogues of Pseudonocardia sp. natural products.
A series of analogues of Pseudonocardia sp. natural products were synthesized, which have been reported to possess potent antibacterial activity against Helicobacter pylori and induce growth defects in Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Taking inspiration from a methodology used in our total synthesis of natural products, we applied this methodology to access analogues possessing bulky N-substituents, traditionally considered to be challenging scaffolds. Screening of the library provided valuable insights into the structure-activity relationship of the bacterial growth defects, and suggested that selectivity between bacterial species should be attainable. Furthermore, a structurally related series of analogues was observed to inhibit production of the virulence factor pyocyanin in the human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which may be a result of their similarity to the Pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS) quorum sensing autoinducer. This provided new insights regarding the effect of N-substitution in PQS analogues, which has been hitherto underexplored.SF was supported by a BBSRC studentship. Repositioning of special schools within a specialist, personalised educational marketplace - the need for a representative principle
This paper considers how notions of inclusive education as defined in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Salamanca Agreement (1994) have become dissipated, and can be developed and reframed to encourage their progress. It analyses the discourse within a range of academic, legal and media texts, exploring how this dissipation has taken place within the UK. Using data from 78 specialist school websites it contextualises this change in the use of the terms and ideas of inclusion with the rise of two other constructs, the 'specialist school' and 'personalisation'. It identifies the need for a precisely defined representative principle to theorise the type of school which inclusion aims to achieve, which cannot be subsumed by segregated providers. It suggests that this principle should not focus on the individual, but draw upon a liberal/democratic view of social justice, underlining inclusive education's role in removing social barriers that prevent equity, access and participation for all

The Generalized Jacobi Equation
The Jacobi equation in pseudo-Riemannian geometry determines the linearized
geodesic flow. The linearization ignores the relative velocity of the
geodesics. The generalized Jacobi equation takes the relative velocity into
account; that is, when the geodesics are neighboring but their relative
velocity is arbitrary the corresponding geodesic deviation equation is the
generalized Jacobi equation. The Hamiltonian structure of this nonlinear
equation is analyzed in this paper. The tidal accelerations for test particles
in the field of a plane gravitational wave and the exterior field of a rotating
mass are investigated. In the latter case, the existence of an attractor of
uniform relative radial motion with speed is pointed
out. The astrophysical implications of this result for the terminal speed of a
