Corrosion resistant thermal barrier coating
A thermal barrier coating system for protecting metal surfaces at high temperature in normally corrosive environments is described. The thermal barrier coating system includes a metal alloy bond coating, the alloy containing nickel, cobalt, iron, or a combination of these metals. The system further includes a corrosion resistant thermal barrier oxide coating containing at least one alkaline earth silicate. The preferred oxides are calcium silicate, barium silicate, magnesium silicate, or combinations of these silicates
The Outer Edges of Dwarf Irregular Galaxies: Stars and Gas
We have in recent years come to view dwarf galaxy evolution in the broader
context of the cosmic evolution of large-scale structure. Dwarf galaxies, as
the putative building blocks of hierarchical galaxy formation, and also as the
most numerous galaxies in the Universe, play a central role in cosmic
evolution. In particular, the interplay of galactic and intergalactic material
around dwarf irregulars must be more extensive than in more massive disk
galaxies because of their lower gravitational potential and lower interstellar
pressures. The outer regions of dwarf irregular galaxies therefore yield vital
clues to the dominant processes in this interaction zone.
The Workshop addressed a number of questions related to the role of the outer
regions in the evolution of dwarf galaxies and broader consequences. On-line

GNurseSIM intercultural simulation for caring for elderly patients: Reflections on co-creation of artefacts
This case study presents the experiences and perceptions of nursing lecturers and students jointly co-creating video simulation artefacts for an Intercultural Care for Elderly Patients.
Context
Globally, the number of elderly over the age of 80 is expected to triple by 2050 up to 426 million. Complexities with cultural perceptions of disorders or healthy ageing impact on access to and appropriate care or health promotion. Global movements mean it is likely diverse elderly patients will encounter as culturally diverse nurses and carers with varied perceptions of elderly and careneeds. Simulation can supplement situated learning to explore complex topics such as intercultural care. An EU funded project: GNurseSIM European consortium (7 partners across 5 countries) was the driver of developing simulations.
Method
This UK case study resulted from student reflections, piloting and evaluation and learning from the co-creation approach and scenarios.
Results
Reflective narratives reveal an awareness of the breadth of culture expression, fallibility of assumptions, self-development and being a ‘professional’ that translate into practice.
Conclusion
The experience of partnership in building these simulation videos point to a deep and transformative learning experience through student co-creation. This approach offers means to develop professional attributes otherwise challenging to teach
Structure and Mass of a Young Globular Cluster in NGC 6946
Using the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope,
we have imaged a luminous young star cluster in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC
6946. The cluster has an absolute visual magnitude M(V)=-13.2, comparable to
the brightest young `super-star clusters' in the Antennae merger galaxy. UBV
colors indicate an age of about 15 Myr. The cluster has a compact core (core
radius = 1.3 pc), surrounded by an extended envelope. We estimate that the
effective radius (Reff) = 13 pc, but this number is uncertain because the outer
parts of the cluster profile gradually merge with the general field. Combined
with population synthesis models, the luminosity and age of the cluster imply a
mass of 8.2x10^5 Msun for a Salpeter IMF extending down to 0.1 Msun, or
5.5x10^5 Msun if the IMF is log-normal below 0.4 Msun. Depending on model
assumptions, the central density of the cluster is between 5300 Msun pc^-3 and
17000 Msun pc^-3, comparable to other high-density star forming regions. We
also estimate a dynamical mass for the cluster, using high-dispersion spectra
from the HIRES spectrograph on the Keck I telescope. The velocity dispersion is
10.0 +/- 2.7 km/s, implying a total cluster mass within 65 pc of (1.7 +/- 0.9)
x 10^6 Msun. Comparing the dynamical mass with the mass estimates based on the
photometry and population synthesis models, the mass-to-light ratio is at least
as high as for a Salpeter IMF extending down to 0.1 Msun, although a turn-over
in the IMF at 0.4 Msun is still possible within the errors. The cluster will
presumably remain bound, evolving into a globular cluster-like object.Comment: 33 pages, including 10 figures and 3 tables. Accepted for publication

The drug efflux pump Pgp1 in pro-inflammatory lymphocytes is a target for novel treatment strategies in COPD
Extent: 8 p.BACKGROUND: Pro-inflammatory/cytotoxic T cells (IFNγ, TNFα, granzyme B+) are increased in the peripheral circulation in COPD. NKT-like and NK cells are effector lymphocytes that we have also shown to be major sources of pro-inflammatory cytokines and granzymes. P-glycoprotein 1 (Pgp1) is a transmembrane efflux pump well characterised in drug resistant cancer cells. We hypothesized that Pgp1 would be increased in peripheral blood T, NKT-like and NK cells in patients with COPD, and that this would be accompanied by increased expression of IFNγ, TNFα and granzyme B. We further hypothesized that treatment with cyclosporine A, a Pgp1 inhibitor, would render cells more sensitive to treatment with corticosteroids. METHODS: Pgp1, granzyme B, IFNγ and TNFα expression were measured in peripheral blood T, NK and NKT-like cells from COPD patients and control subjects (± cyclosporine A and prednisolone) following in vitro stimulation and results correlated with uptake of efflux dye Calcein-AM using flow cytometry. RESULTS: There was increased Pgp1 expression by peripheral blood T, NKT-like and NK cells co-expressing IFNγ, TNFα and granzyme B in COPD patients compared with controls (e.g. %IFNγ/Pgp1 T, NKT-like, NK for COPD (Control): 25(6), 54(27), 39(23)). There was an inverse correlation between Pgp1 expression and Calcein-AM uptake. Treatment with 2.5 ng/ml cylosporin A and10-6 M prednisolone resulted in synergistic inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines in Pgp1 + cells (p < 0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS: Treatment strategies that target Pgp1 in T, NKT-like and NK cells may reduce systemic inflammatory mediators in COPD and improve patient morbidity.Greg Hodge, Mark Holmes, Hubertus Jersmann, Paul N. WFPC2 Observations of Massive and Compact Young Star Clusters in M31
We present color magnitude diagrams of four blue massive and compact star
clusters in M31: G38, G44, G94, and G293. The diagrams of the four clusters
reveal a well-populated upper main sequence and various numbers of supergiants.
The U-B and B-V colors of the upper main sequence stars are used to determine
reddening estimates of the different lines of sight in the M31 disk. Reddening
values range from E(B-V) = 0.20 +/- 0.10 to 0.31 +/- 0.11. We statistically
remove field stars on the basis of completeness, magnitude and color. Isochrone
fits to the field-subtracted, reddening-corrected diagrams yield age estimates
ranging from 63 +/- 15 Myr to 160 +/- 60 Myr. Implications for the recent
evolution of the disk near NGC 206 are discussed.Comment: 17 pages, Latex, ApJ, in Pres
C stars in the outer spheroid of NGC 6822
From a 2 x 2 degree survey of NGC 6822 we have previously established that
this Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy possesses a huge spheroid having more
than one degree in length. This spheroid is in rotation but its rotation curve
is known only within ~15' from the center. It is therefore critical to identify
bright stars belonging to the spheroid to characterize, as far as possible, its
outer kinematics. We use the new wide field near infrared imager CPAPIR,
operated by the SMARTS consortium, to acquire J, Ks images of two 34.8' x 34.8'
areas in the outer spheroid to search for C stars. The colour diagram of the
fields allows the identification of 192 C stars candidates but a study of the
FWHM of the images permits the rejection of numerous non-stellar objects with
colours similar to C stars. We are left with 75 new C stars, their mean Ks
magnitude and mean colour are similar to the bulk of known NGC 6822 C stars.
This outer spheroid survey confirms that the intermediate-age AGB stars are a
major contributor to the stellar populations of the spheroid. The discovery of
some 50 C stars well beyond the limit of the previously known rotation curve
calls for a promising spectroscopic follow-up to a major axis distance of 40'.Comment: 13 page
An HST/WFPC2 Survey of Bright Young Clusters in M31 III. Structural Parameters
Surface brightness profiles for 23 M31 star clusters were measured using
images from the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on the Hubble Space Telescope,
and fit to two types of models to determine the clusters' structural
properties. The clusters are primarily young (~10^8 yr) and massive (~10^4.5
solar masses), with median half-light radius 7 pc and dissolution times of a
few Gyr. The properties of the M31 clusters are comparable to those of clusters
of similar age in the Magellanic Clouds. Simulated star clusters are used to
derive a conversion from statistical measures of cluster size to half-light
radius so that the extragalactic clusters can be compared to young massive
clusters in the Milky Way. All three sets of star clusters fall approximately
on the same age-size relation. The young M31 clusters are expected to dissolve
within a few Gyr and will not survive to become old, globular clusters.
However, they do appear to follow the same fundamental plane relations as old
clusters; if confirmed with velocity dispersion measurements, this would be a
strong indication that the star cluster fundamental plane reflects universal
cluster formation conditions.Comment: AJ in press; 37 pages, 12 figure
GBM Observations of V404 Cyg During its 2015 Outburst
V404 Cygni was discovered in 1989 by the X-ray satellite during its
only previously observed X-ray outburst and soon after confirmed as a black
hole binary. On June 15, 2015, the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) triggered on a
new outburst of V404 Cygni. We present 13 days of GBM observations of this
outburst including Earth occultation flux measurements, spectral and temporal
analysis. The Earth occultation fluxes reached 30 Crab with detected emission
to 100 keV and determined, via hardness ratios, that the source was in a hard
state. At high luminosity, spectral analysis between 8 and 300 keV showed that
the electron temperature decreased with increasing luminosity. This is expected
if the protons and electrons are in thermal equilibrium during an outburst with
the electrons cooled by the Compton scattering of softer seed photons from the
disk. However, the implied seed photon temperatures are unusually high,
suggesting a contribution from another source, such as the jet. No evidence of
state transitions is seen during this time period. The temporal analysis
reveals power spectra that can be modeled with two or three strong, broad
Lorentzians, similar to the power spectra of black hole binaries in their hard
state
