âsome kind of thing it aint us but yet its in usâ: David Mitchell, Russell Hoban, and metafiction after the millennium
This article appraises the debt that David Mitchellâs Cloud Atlas owes to the novels of Russell Hoban, including, but not limited to, Riddley Walker. After clearly mapping a history of Hobanâs philosophical perspectives and Mitchellâs inter-textual genre-impersonation practice, the article assesses the degree to which Mitchellâs metatextual methods indicate a nostalgia for by-gone radical aesthetics rather than reaching for new modes of its own. The article not only proposes several new backdrops against which Mitchellâs novel can be read but also conducts the first in-depth appraisal of Mitchellâs formal linguistic replication of Riddley Walker
Unbounded randomness certification using sequences of measurements
Unpredictability, or randomness, of the outcomes of measurements made on an
entangled state can be certified provided that the statistics violate a Bell
inequality. In the standard Bell scenario where each party performs a single
measurement on its share of the system, only a finite amount of randomness, of
at most bits, can be certified from a pair of entangled particles
of dimension . Our work shows that this fundamental limitation can be
overcome using sequences of (nonprojective) measurements on the same system.
More precisely, we prove that one can certify any amount of random bits from a
pair of qubits in a pure state as the resource, even if it is arbitrarily
weakly entangled. In addition, this certification is achieved by near-maximal
violation of a particular Bell inequality for each measurement in the sequence.Comment: 4 + 5 pages (1 + 3 images), published versio
Almost quantum correlations
Quantum theory is not only successfully tested in laboratories every day but also constitutes a robust theoretical framework: small variations usually lead to implausible consequences, such as faster-than-light communication. It has even been argued that quantum theory may be special among possible theories. Here we report that, at the level of correlations among different systems, quantum theory is not so special. We define a set of correlations, dubbed 'almost quantum', and prove that it strictly contains the set of quantum correlations but satisfies all-but-one of the proposed principles to capture quantum correlations. We present numerical evidence that the remaining principle is satisfied too. © 2015 Macmillan Publishers Limited
Design and Investigation of Vitiated-Air Heater for Oblique Detonation-Wave Engine
A facility was designed to provide high-enthalpy, hypersonic flow to a detonation chamber. Preliminary investigation identified 1300 K and Mach 5 as the total temperature and Mach number require to stabilize an oblique detonation wave inside the detonation chamber. Vitiated-air heating was the preheating method chosen to meet these capabilities. The vitiator facility heats compressed air while still retaining about 50% of the original oxygen content. Schlieren flow visualization and conventional photography was performed at the exit plane of a choke plate, which simulated the throat of a converging-diverging nozzle. A shock diamond formation was observed within the jet exhausting out of the choke hole. This is a clear indication that the facility is capable of producing hypersonic flow. A stoichiometric propane-air mixture was burned inside the combustion chamber. A thermocouple survey measured an average temperature of 1099 K at the exit plane of the mixing chamber; however, the actual temperature is likely higher than this, because cool, ambient air could be seen mixing with the hot, vitiated air near the exit plane. Because the adiabatic flame temperature of propane-air is lower than that of hydrogen-air, if hydrogen is used to vitiate the air, the facility is capable of meeting the 1300-K objective
Readings in program control
Under the heading of Program Control, a number of related topics are discussed: cost estimating methods; planning and scheduling; cost overruns in the defense industry; the history of estimating; the advantages of cost plus award fee contracts; and how program control techniques led to the success of a NASA development project
PKM Katekese Tentang Menghayati Nilai Kekeluargaan dalam Era Digital bagi Para Orangtua Peserta Komuni Pertama
The communication media as a work of human beings reason from time to time has a very rapidly progress together with the growth and the development of new innovations in the world of the digital technology. This progress is a certainty that must be received by the human beings who are in a strong mind and conscience awareness that communication media is so sophisticated but remains as a means of the development of the human beings civilization. This awareness gradually can be expected to encourage human beings in order to place themselves appropriately as the subject of the development of the communication media itself through a rational and an accurate filtering process against negative influences that can threaten with human beings civilization. One of the institutions is threatened with the negative influences of the communicaton media is family. At first the family gets a respected position as a socialization agent about the values of life is now experiencing decline of function as well as its role because the majority of the family members are now snared because of the negative influences of the communication media. The sympathetic as well as the empathetic atmosphere are used to be the first decoration in the house and now is just becoming a nice memory but sadden. The fascination is too axtreme makes each of the family member of the communication media and finally appear some attitudes as well as behaviours that don,t go with the values of solidarity and the family as well. At last, this problem lets grow as well as develop without striving for preventive and curative of the various social elements. This meant preparing a show of a destruction of the generation in the future. Therefore, the whole sides are expected to their involvement to be a foremost line in preventing efforts. On the basis, the Paroki St. Yosef Onekore is also moved at giving the basics correct of comprehension to the parents in the catechetical activities that the communication media is actually just a means of using it to proclaim the King of God
Generalized Bell Inequality Experiments and Computation
We consider general settings of Bell inequality experiments with many
parties, where each party chooses from a finite number of measurement settings
each with a finite number of outcomes. We investigate the constraints that Bell
inequalities place upon the correlations possible in a local hidden variable
theories using a geometrical picture of correlations. We show that local hidden
variable theories can be characterized in terms of limited computational
expressiveness, which allows us to characterize families of Bell inequalities.
The limited computational expressiveness for many settings (each with many
outcomes) generalizes previous results about the many-party situation each with
a choice of two possible measurements (each with two outcomes). Using this
computational picture we present generalizations of the Popescu-Rohrlich
non-local box for many parties and non-binary inputs and outputs at each site.
Finally, we comment on the effect of pre-processing on measurement data in our
generalized setting and show that it becomes problematic outside of the binary
setting, in that it allows local hidden variable theories to simulate maximally
non-local correlations such as those of these generalised Popescu-Rohrlich
non-local boxes.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, supplemental material available upon request.
