    Probing discs around massive young stellar objects with CO first overtone emission

    We present high resolution (R~50,000) spectroastrometry over the CO 1st overtone bandhead of a sample of seven intermediate/massive young stellar objects. These are primarily drawn from the red MSX source (RMS) survey, a systematic search for young massive stars which has returned a large, well selected sample of such objects. The mean luminosity of the sample is approximately 5 times 10^4 L_\odot, indicating the objects typically have a mass of ~15 solar masses. We fit the observed bandhead profiles with a model of a circumstellar disc, and find good agreement between the models and observations for all but one object. We compare the high angular precision (0.2-0.8 mas) spectroastrometric data to the spatial distribution of the emitting material in the best-fitting models. No spatial signatures of discs are detected, which is entirely consistent with the properties of the best-fitting models. Therefore, the observations suggest that the CO bandhead emission of massive young stellar objects originates in small-scale disks, in agreement with previous work. This provides further evidence that massive stars form via disc accretion, as suggested by recent simulations.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Near-infrared integral field spectroscopy of Massive Young Stellar Objects

    We present medium resolution (R≈5300R\approx5300) KK-band integral field spectroscopy of six MYSOs. The targets are selected from the RMS survey, and we used the NIFS on the Gemini North telescope. The data show various spectral line features including Brγ\gamma, CO, H2_2, and \mbox{He\,{\sc i}}. The Brγ\gamma line is detected in emission in all objects with vFWHM∼100v_\mathrm{FWHM}\sim100 -- 200 kms−1^{-1}. V645 Cyg shows a high-velocity P-Cygni profile between -800 kms−1^{-1} and -300 kms−1^{-1}. We performed three-dimensional spectroastrometry to diagnose the circumstellar environment in the vicinity of the central stars using the Brγ\gamma line. We measured the centroids of the velocity components with sub-mas precision. The centroids allow us to discriminate the blueshifted and redshifted components in a roughly east--west direction in both IRAS 18151--1208 and S106 in Brγ\gamma. This lies almost perpendicular to observed larger scale outflows. We conclude, given the widths of the lines and the orientation of the spectroastrometric signature, that our results trace a disc wind in both IRAS 18151--1208 and S106. The CO ν=2−0\nu=2-0 absorption lines at low JJ transitions are detected in IRAS 18151--1208 and AFGL 2136. We analysed the velocity structure of the neutral gas discs. In IRAS 18151--1208, the absorption centroids of the blueshifted and redshifted components are separated in a direction of north-east to south-west, nearly perpendicular to that of the larger scale H2H_2 jet. The position-velocity relations of these objects can be reproduced with central masses of 30 M_{\sun} for IRAS 18151--1208 and 20 M_{\sun} for AFGL 2136. We also detect CO ν=2−0\nu=2-0 bandhead emission in IRAS 18151--1208, S106 and V645 Cyg. The results can be fitted reasonably with a Keplerian rotation model, with masses of 15, 20 and 20 M_{\sun} respectively.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, accepted by MNRA

    Goonhilly: a new site for e-MERLIN and the EVN

    The benefits for the e-MERLIN and EVN arrays of using antennae at the satellite communication station at Goonhilly in Cornwall are discussed. The location of this site - new to astronomy - will provide an almost equal distribution of long baselines in the east-west- and north-south directions, and opens up the possibility to get significantly improved observations of equatorial fields with e-MERLIN. These additional baselines will improve the sensitivity on a set of critical spatial scales and will increase the angular resolution of e-MERLIN by a factor of two. e-MERLIN observations, including many allocated under the e-MERLIN Legacy programme, will benefit from the enhanced angular resolution and imaging capability especially for sources close to or below the celestial equator (where ESO facilities such as ALMA will operate) of including the Goonhilly telescopes. Furthermore, the baselines formed between Goonhilly and the existing stations will close the gap between the baselines of e-MERLIN and those of the European VLBI Network (EVN) and therefore enhance the legacy value of e-MERLIN datasets.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figue

    Using novel palaeolimnological techniques to define conservation objectives for Hatch Mere: Report for Cheshire Wildlife Trust

    This is the final report to Natural England on the project ‘Using novel palaeolimnological techniques to define lake conservation objectives for Hatch Mere’. The aim is to use existing and recently developed palaeoecological techniques to define reference conditions and assess the condition of Hatch Mere Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) in the Cheshire meres, and thereby assist in the setting of conservation objectives and management goals. Two sediment cores (one open water and one marginal), approximately 1 m in length, were collected from Hatch Mere in August 2011. The cores were sampled at 1 cm intervals throughout and approximately ten samples from each site were analysed for diatoms, Cladocera, macrofossils, geochemistry (XRF) and pigments. The cores were dated using radiometric techniques in order to place the fossil remains within a known time frame. An existing diatom-total phosphorus (TP) transfer function was applied to the diatom data to reconstruct the nutrient history of the mere. The dating results suggest that the open water core (HAT3) extends back to ~1800 AD and the marginal core extends back beyond ~17o00 AD. The palaeoecological data indicate that the site has been a moderately enriched lake for the whole of the period represented by the cores with diatom-inferred TP concentrations of ~30 μg L-1 in the lower part of the record. However, there were marked changes across a range of indicators from the early 1800s indicative of enrichment, which has continued through the twentieth century. The key changes were the expansion of the eutrophic diatom species Cyclostephanos dubius and hence an increase in diatom-inferred TP to ~84 μg L-1, a steady increase in pigment concentrations from all algal groups, and shifts in the zooplankton community indicative of increased pelagic productivity. Eutrophication has resulted in marked changes in the aquatic plant community from a structurally diverse flora with abundant Charophytes, nymphaeids and taxa with a mix of seasonalities to the current state with no submerged flora and only Nuphar lutea. The most notable changes in the macrofossil record have occurred from the mid-1800s and are, therefore, coincident with the main phase of enrichment. The dominance of the upper sediments by planktonic zooplankton and abundant Daphnia ephippia towards the top of the core, lends further weight to a plankton dominated system. This study provides information on the plant and animal communities that were present in the lake prior to the major eutrophication phase and this significantly alters the generic target previously set for the lake and will be valuable for setting targets for future management of the site

    Global Optimization by Basin-Hopping and the Lowest Energy Structures of Lennard-Jones Clusters Containing up to 110 Atoms

    We describe a global optimization technique using `basin-hopping' in which the potential energy surface is transformed into a collection of interpenetrating staircases. This method has been designed to exploit the features which recent work suggests must be present in an energy landscape for efficient relaxation to the global minimum. The transformation associates any point in configuration space with the local minimum obtained by a geometry optimization started from that point, effectively removing transition state regions from the problem. However, unlike other methods based upon hypersurface deformation, this transformation does not change the global minimum.     Expanding e-MERLIN with the Goonhilly Earth Station

    A consortium of universities has recently been formed with the goal of using the decommissioned telecommunications infrastructure at the Goonhilly Earth Station in Cornwall, UK, for astronomical purposes. One particular goal is the introduction of one or more of the ~30-metre parabolic antennas into the existing e-MERLIN radio interferometer. This article introduces this scheme and presents some simulations which quantify the improvements that would be brought to the e-MERLIN system. These include an approximate doubling of the spatial resolution of the array, an increase in its N-S extent with strong implications for imaging the most well-studied equatorial fields, accessible to ESO facilities including ALMA. It also increases the overlap between the e-MERLIN array and the European VLBI Network.     Algebraic Principles for Rely-Guarantee Style Concurrency Verification Tools

    We provide simple equational principles for deriving rely-guarantee-style inference rules and refinement laws based on idempotent semirings. We link the algebraic layer with concrete models of programs based on languages and execution traces. We have implemented the approach in Isabelle/HOL as a lightweight concurrency verification tool that supports reasoning about the control and data flow of concurrent programs with shared variables at different levels of abstraction. This is illustrated on two simple verification examples

    Rate-Based Transition Systems for Stochastic Process Calculi

    A variant of Rate Transition Systems (RTS), proposed by Klin and Sassone, is introduced and used as the basic model for defining stochastic behaviour of processes. The transition relation used in our variant associates to each process, for each action, the set of possible futures paired with a measure indicating their rates. We show how RTS can be used for providing the operational semantics of stochastic extensions of classical formalisms, namely CSP and CCS. We also show that our semantics for stochastic CCS guarantees associativity of parallel composition. Similarly, in contrast with the original definition by Priami, we argue that a semantics for stochastic π-calculus can be provided that guarantees associativity of parallel composition

    Topological organization of whole-brain white matter in HIV infection

    Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is associated with neuroimaging alterations. However, little is known about the topological organization of whole-brain networks and the corresponding association with cognition. As such, we examined structural whole-brain white matter connectivity patterns and cognitive performance in 29 HIV+ young adults (mean age = 25.9) with limited or no HIV treatment history. HIV+ participants and demographically similar HIV− controls (n = 16) residing in South Africa underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neuropsychological testing. Structural network models were constructed using diffusion MRI-based multifiber tractography and T(1)-weighted MRI-based regional gray matter segmentation. Global network measures included whole-brain structural integration, connection strength, and structural segregation. Cognition was measured using a neuropsychological global deficit score (GDS) as well as individual cognitive domains. Results revealed that HIV+ participants exhibited significant disruptions to whole-brain networks, characterized by weaker structural integration (characteristic path length and efficiency), connection strength, and structural segregation (clustering coefficient) than HIV− controls (p < 0.05). GDSs and performance on learning/recall tasks were negatively correlated with the clustering coefficient (p < 0.05) in HIV+ participants. Results from this study indicate disruption to brain network integrity in treatment-limited HIV+ young adults with corresponding abnormalities in cognitive performance
