An isogeometric analysis for elliptic homogenization problems
A novel and efficient approach which is based on the framework of
isogeometric analysis for elliptic homogenization problems is proposed. These
problems possess highly oscillating coefficients leading to extremely high
computational expenses while using traditional finite element methods. The
isogeometric analysis heterogeneous multiscale method (IGA-HMM) investigated in
this paper is regarded as an alternative approach to the standard Finite
Element Heterogeneous Multiscale Method (FE-HMM) which is currently an
effective framework to solve these problems. The method utilizes non-uniform
rational B-splines (NURBS) in both macro and micro levels instead of standard
Lagrange basis. Beside the ability to describe exactly the geometry, it
tremendously facilitates high-order macroscopic/microscopic discretizations
thanks to the flexibility of refinement and degree elevation with an arbitrary
continuity level provided by NURBS basis functions. A priori error estimates of
the discretization error coming from macro and micro meshes and optimal micro
refinement strategies for macro/micro NURBS basis functions of arbitrary orders
are derived. Numerical results show the excellent performance of the proposed
method
Proteins and polymers
Proteins, chain molecules of amino acids, behave in ways which are similar to
each other yet quite distinct from standard compact polymers. We demonstrate
that the Flory theorem, derived for polymer melts, holds for compact protein
native state structures and is not incompatible with the existence of
structured building blocks such as -helices and -strands. We
present a discussion on how the notion of the thickness of a polymer chain,
besides being useful in describing a chain molecule in the continuum limit,
plays a vital role in interpolating between conventional polymer physics and
the phase of matter associated with protein structures.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Optimizing Boiler Efficiency by Data Mining Teciques: A Case Study
In a fertilizer plant, the steam boiler is the most important component. In order to keep the plant operating in the effective mode, the boiler efficiency must be observed continuously by several operators. When the trend of the boiler efficiency is going down, they may adjust the controlling parameters of the boiler to increase its efficiency. Since manual operation usually leads to unex-pectedly mistakes and hurts the efficiency of the system, we build an information system that plays the role of the operators in observing the boiler and adjusting the controlling parameters to stabilize the boiler efficiency. In this paper, we first introduce the architecture of the information system. We then present how to apply K-means and Fuzzy C-means algorithms to derive a knowledge base from the historical operational data of the boiler. Next, recurrent fuzzy neural network is employed to build a boiler simulator for evaluating which tuple of input values is the best optimal and then automatically adjusting controlling inputs of the boiler by the optimal val-ues. In order to prove the effectiveness of our system, we deployed it at Phu My Fertilizer Plant equipped with MARCHI boiler having capacity of 76-84 ton/h. We found that our system have improved the boiler efficiency about 0.28-1.12% in average and brought benefit about 57.000 USD/year to the Phu My Fertilizer Plant
Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography of conjunctival mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma with presumed choroidal involvement
Conjunctival mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma has been well-described, but rarely do these lesions demonstrate intraocular involvement. We report a case of conjunctival MALT lymphoma with intraocular involvement and novel spectral-domain ocular coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings.
A 75-year-old woman with biopsy-proven MALT lymphoma of the conjunctiva presented with ipsilateral yellowish diffuse choroidal infiltrates on fundoscopic examination. Choroidal involvement was documented clinically, on ultrasonography, on fluorescein angiography, and by SD-OCT. Treatment consisted of 3 weeks of oral doxycycline and six cycles of systemic chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, vincristine, prednisone, and rituximab.
There was no evidence of progression or recurrence of MALT lymphoma after 9 months of follow-up. Despite complete resolution of clinical findings, ultrasound, and fluorescein angiography, the choroidal lesions remained unchanged on SD-OCT.
Choroidal involvement of conjunctival MALT is rare, and can be successfully treated. Persistence of irregularities on SD-OCT did not influence management in the presence of clinical improvement and resolution on ultrasonography and fluorescein angiography
Scaling of folding properties in simple models of proteins
Scaling of folding properties of proteins is studied in a toy system -- the
lattice Go model with various two- and three- dimensional geometries of the
maximally compact native states. Characteristic folding times grow as power
laws with the system size. The corresponding exponents are not universal.
Scaling of the thermodynamic stability also indicates size-related

Memory in low-grade glioma patients treated with radiotherapy or temozolomide: a correlative analysis of EORTC study 22033-26033.
EORTC study 22033-26033 showed no difference in progression-free survival between high-risk low-grade glioma receiving either radiotherapy (RT) or temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy alone as primary treatment. Considering the potential long-term deleterious impact of RT on memory functioning, this study aims to determine whether TMZ is associated with less impaired memory functioning.
Using the Visual Verbal Learning Test (VVLT), memory functioning was evaluated at baseline and subsequently every 6 months. Minimal compliance for statistical analyses was set at 60%. Conventional indices of memory performance (VVLT Immediate Recall, Total Recall, Learning Capacity, and Delayed Recall) were used as outcome measures. Using a mixed linear model, memory functioning was compared between treatment arms and over time.
Neuropsychological assessment was performed in 98 patients (53 RT, 46 TMZ). At 12 months, compliance had dropped to 66%, restricting analyses to baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. At baseline, patients in either treatment arm did not differ in memory functioning, sex, age, or educational level. Over time, patients in both arms showed improvement in Immediate Recall (P = 0.017) and total number of words recalled (Total Recall; P < 0.001, albeit with delayed improvement in RT patients (group by time; P = 0.011). Memory functioning was not associated with RT gross, clinical, or planned target volumes.
In patients with high-risk low-grade glioma there is no indication that in the first year after treatment, RT has a deleterious effect on memory function compared with TMZ chemotherapy
