Physical Modeling of Dust Polarization from Magnetically Enhanced Radiative Torque (MRAT) Alignment in Protostellar Cores with POLARIS

Magnetic fields (B\textbf{B}) are an important factor that controls the star formation process. The leading method to observe B\textbf{B} is using polarized thermal emission from dust grains aligned with B\textbf{B}. However, in dense environments such as protostellar cores, dust grains may have inefficient alignment due to strong gas randomizations, so that using dust polarization to trace B\textbf{B} is uncertain. Hoang &\& Lazarian (2016) demonstrated that the grain alignment by RAdiative Torques is enhanced if dust grains contain embedded iron inclusions. Here we extend POLARIS code to study the effect of iron inclusions on grain alignment and thermal dust polarization toward a protostellar core, assuming uniform magnetic fields. We found that paramagnetic grains produce a low polarization degree of p1%p \sim 1\% in the envelope and negligible p1%p \ll 1\% in the central region due to the loss of grain alignment. In contrast, grains with a high level of iron inclusions can have perfect alignment and produce high p40%p \sim 40\% in the envelope and low p10%p \leq 10\% in the central region. Grains with a moderate level of iron inclusions induce the polarization flipping from P\textbf{P} \parallel B\textbf{B} at millimeter to P\textbf{P} \perp B\textbf{B} at submillimeter due to the change in the internal alignment caused by slow internal relaxation. The weak alignment of very large grains of a10μma \geq 10\mu m reduces the polarization by dichroic extinction at submillimeter wavelengths. We found a positive correlation between p and the level of iron inclusions, which opens a new window to constrain the abundance of irons locked in dust through dust polarimetry.Comment: 35 pages, 25 figure

Numerical modeling of thermal dust polarization from aligned grains in the envelope of evolved stars with updated POLARIS

Magnetic fields are thought to influence the formation and evolution of evolved star envelopes. Thermal dust polarization from magnetically aligned grains is potentially a powerful tool for probing magnetic fields and dust properties in these circumstellar environments. In this paper, we present numerical modeling of thermal dust polarization from the envelope of IK Tau using the magnetically enhanced radiative torque (MRAT) alignment theory implemented in our updated POLARIS code. Due to the strong stellar radiation field, the minimum size required for RAT alignment of silicate grains is 0.0050.05μm\sim 0.005 - 0.05\,\rm\mu m. Additionally, ordinary paramagnetic grains can achieve perfect alignment by MRAT in the inner regions of r<500aur < 500\,\rm au due to stronger magnetic fields of B10B\sim 10 mG - 1G, producing thermal dust polarization degree of 10%\sim 10\,\%. The polarization degree can be enhanced to 2040%\sim 20-40\% for grains with embedded iron inclusions. We also find that the magnetic field geometry affects the alignment size and the resulting polarization degree due to the projection effect in the plane-of-sky. We also study the spectrum of polarized thermal dust emission and find the increased polarization degree toward λ>50μm\lambda > 50\,\rm\mu m due to the alignment of small grains by MRAT. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of rotational disruption by RATs (RAT-D) and find the RAT-D effect cause a decrease in the dust polarization fraction. Finally, we compare our numerical results with available polarization data observed by SOFIA/HAWC+ for constraining dust properties, suggesting grains are unlikely to have embedded iron clusters and might have slightly elongated shapes. Our modeling results suggest further observational studies at far-infrared/sub-millimeter wavelengths to understand the properties of magnetic fields and dust in AGB envelopes.Comment: 27 pages, 23 figures, 1 table, to be submitte

Humans are simultaneously facing challenges as climate change, epidemics and scarcity of food and water. It is estimated that by 2021 over 690 million of people will face hunger; by 2050 the global population will increase up to 10 billion with 68% of the population living in urban areas. By providing 30% of self-sufficient food in 2030, urban agriculture will be a practical concept to face these challenges. The work studies the role of agricultural land as a critical part for a resilient city. Parameters related to food production are also explored. As study case, this work aims to investigate the current food security of the Ho Chi Minh city (HCMC), offering productive green solutions at different scales from land-use planning, urban design to green roofs. For a production of 6.7 kg/day of vegetables a day, the costs of are approximately $10,000 for nearly 5.6 square meters of land; this points out A-Go-Gro technology as an effective measure for vertical farming. For example, 0.18 ha of green space can produce 2 tons of vegetables per day in the Lake View settlement (district 2 in HCMC). Moreover, due to green roofs, stormwater volumes directed into the sewer system are decreased by 65% and the penetration of electromagnetic radiation is reduced by 99.4%.Loài người đang đồng thời đối mặt với những thách thức như biến đổi khí hậu, dịch bệnh, khan hiếm thực phẩm và nước. The process of erosion-sedimentation of Cua Tung, Quang Tri province has been mentioned in previous studies, but there have been no studies that apply satellite images to evaluate the changes of shoreline before and after the construction of groin along the south of Ben Hai river. This paper aims to evaluate the changes and rate of erosion - sedimentation of Cua Tung shoreline before and after the construction, using Landsat satellite images from 1990 to 2017. We used Envi 5.0 to analyse and interpret multiple-spectral Landsat satellite images in combination with analysis algorithm to identify the shoreline change over the years by adopting the ratio image method by Gathot Winasor to separate water zone and shoreline zone automatically. We then calculated the rate of shoreline changes by the function DSAS (Digital Shoreline Analysis System) proposed by Thieler et al., in Avenue programming language in ArcView software. The results showed that the process of erosion-sedimentation in Cua Tung-Quang Tri from 1990 to 2017 was divided into 6 stages in which the stage of 2000–2005 had the clearest indication in the process of erosion-sedimentation. This research has demonstrated that GIS and remote sensing technologies have been good tools to assist policy maker in their decision-making to properly evaluate erosion-sedimentation in Cua Tung- Quang Tri, so that appropriate solutions will be delivered to guarantee the local socio-economic sustainable development

A cell-based smoothed three-node plate finite element with a bubble node for static analyses of both thin and thick plates

This paper develops the cell-based (CS) smoothed finite element method for a three-node plate finite element with a bubble node at the centroid of the element. Based on the first-order shear deformation theory, the in-plane strains are smoothed on three non-overlapped subdomains of the element to transform the numerical integration of the element stiffness matrix from the surfaces into the lines of the subdomains. The shear-locking phenomenon, which occurs when the plate's thickness becomes small, is removed by employing the mixed interpolation of tensorial components (MITC). The present element, namely CS-MITC3+, passes the patch test and behaves independently from the sequence of node numbers of the element. Numerical results given by the CS-MITC3+ elements are better than the MITC3+ elements. As compared to other smoothed three-node plate finite elements, the CS-MITC3+ is a good competitor

Studying Magnetic Fields and Dust in M17 Using Polarized Thermal Dust Emission Observed by SOFIA/HAWC

We report on the highest spatial resolution measurement to date of magnetic fields (B-fields) in M17 using thermal dust polarization measurements taken by SOFIA/HAWC+ centered at a wavelength of 154 μm. Using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, in which the polarization angle dispersion calculated using the structure function technique is the quantity directly observed by SOFIA/HAWC+, we found the presence of strong B-fields of 980 ± 230 and 1665 ± 885 μG in the lower-density M17-N and higher-density M17-S regions, respectively. The B-field morphology in M17-N possibly mimics the fields in gravitationally collapsing molecular cores, while in M17-S the fields run perpendicular to the density structure. M17-S also displays a pillar feature and an asymmetric large-scale hourglass-shaped field. We use the mean B-field strengths to determine Alfvénic Mach numbers for both regions, finding that B-fields dominate over turbulence. We calculate the mass-to-flux ratio, λ, finding λ = 0.07 for M17-N and 0.28 for M17-S. These subcritical λ values are consistent with the lack of massive stars formed in M17. To study dust physics, we analyze the relationship between dust polarization fraction, p, emission intensity, I, gas column density, N(H2), polarization angle dispersion function, S, and dust temperature, T d. p decreases with intensity as I −α with α = 0.51. p tends to first increase with T d, but then decreases at higher T d. The latter feature, seen in M17-N at high T d when N(H2) and S decrease, is evidence of the radiative torque disruption effect
