    Momentum Analysis in Strong-field Double Ionization

    We provide a basis for the laser intensity dependence of the momentum distributions of electrons and ions arising from strong-field non-sequential double ionization (NSDI) at intensities in the range I=1−6.5×1014W/cm2I=1-6.5 \times 10^{14} W/cm^2. To do this we use a completely classical method introduced previously \cite{ho-etal05}. Our calculated results reproduce the features of experimental observations at different laser intensities and depend on just two distinct categories of electon trajectories.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure

    We show that when the field strength H of the NS-NS B field does not vanish, the coordinates X and momenta P of an open string endpoints satisfy a set of mixed commutation relations among themselves.     Nuclear Activity and the Dynamics of Elliptical Galaxies

    This paper looks for any correlation between the internal dynamics of elliptical galaxies and the relatively mild nuclear activity found in many such systems. We show that there is such a relation in the sense that the active ellipticals tend to be significantly less rotationally supported than their inactive cousins. The correlation can partly be related to the galaxies' luminosities: the brightest galaxies tend to be more active and less rotationally supported. However, even at lower luminosities the active and inactive galaxies seem to have systematically different dynamics. This variation suggests that there are significant large-scale structural differences between active and inactive elliptical galaxies, and hence that the existence of both types of system cannot just be the result of random sporadic nuclear activity.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures.     Coupling/decoupling between translational and rotational dynamics in a supercooled molecular liquid

    We use molecular dynamics computer simulations to investigate the coupling/decoupling between translational and rotational dynamics in a glass-forming liquid of dumbbells. This is done via a careful analysis of the α\alpha-relaxation time τq∗C\tau_{q^{*}}^{\rm C} of the incoherent center-of-mass density correlator at the structure factor peak, the α\alpha-relaxation time τ2\tau_{2} of the reorientational correlator, and the translational (DtD_{t}) and rotational (DrD_{r}) diffusion constants. We find that the coupling between the relaxation times τq∗C\tau_{q^{*}}^{\rm C} and τ2\tau_{2} increases with decreasing temperature TT, whereas the coupling decreases between the diffusivities DtD_{t} and DrD_{r}. In addition, the TT-dependence of DtD_{t} decouples from that of 1/τ21/\tau_{2}, which is consistent with previous experiments and has been interpreted as a signature of the "translation-rotation decoupling." We trace back these apparently contradicting observations to the dynamical heterogeneities in the system. We show that the decreasing coupling in the diffusivities DtD_{t} and DrD_{r} is only apparent due to the inadequacy of the concept of the rotational diffusion constant for describing the reorientational dynamics in the supercooled state. We also argue that the coupling between τq∗C\tau_{q^{*}}^{\rm C} and τ2\tau_{2} and the decoupling between DtD_{t} and 1/τ21/\tau_{2}, both of which strengthen upon cooling, can be consistently understood in terms of the growing dynamic length scale.Comment: revised manuscript, to appear in Phys.     The effect of screening long-range Coulomb interactions on the metallic behavior in two-dimensional hole systems

    We have developed a technique utilizing a double quantum well heterostructure that allows us to study the effect of a nearby ground-plane on the metallic behavior in a GaAs two-dimensional hole system (2DHS) in a single sample and measurement cool-down, thereby maintaining a constant disorder potential. In contrast to recent measurements of the effect of ground-plane screening of the long-range Coulomb interaction in the insulating regime, we find surprisingly little effect on the metallic behavior when we change the distance between the 2DHS and the nearby ground-plane.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PR
