Momentum Analysis in Strong-field Double Ionization
We provide a basis for the laser intensity dependence of the momentum
distributions of electrons and ions arising from strong-field non-sequential
double ionization (NSDI) at intensities in the range . To do this we use a completely classical method introduced previously
\cite{ho-etal05}. Our calculated results reproduce the features of experimental
observations at different laser intensities and depend on just two distinct

Noncommutative D-Brane in Non-Constant NS-NS B Field Background
We show that when the field strength H of the NS-NS B field does not vanish,
the coordinates X and momenta P of an open string endpoints satisfy a set of
mixed commutation relations among themselves. Identifying X and P with the
coordinates and derivatives of the D-brane world volume, we find a new type of
noncommutative spaces which is very different from those associated with a

The design of aircraft brake systems, employing cooling to increase brake life
A research program was initiated to determine the feasibility of using cooling to increase brake life. An air cooling scheme was proposed, constructed and tested with various designs. Straight and curved slotting of the friction material was tested. A water cooling technique, similar to the air cooling procedure, was evaluated on a curved slotted rotor. Also investigated was the possibility of using a phase-change material within the rotor to absorb heat during braking. Various phase-changing materials were tabulated and a 50%, (by weight) LiF - BeF2 mixing was chosen. It was shown that corrosion was not a problem with this mixture. A preliminary design was evaluated on an actual brake. Results showed that significant improvements in lowering the surface temperature of the brake occurred when air or water cooling was used in conjunction with curved slotted rotors
A UV completion of scalar electrodynamics
In previous works, we constructed UV-finite and unitary scalar field theories
with an infinite spectrum of propagating modes for arbitrary polynomial
interactions. In this paper, we introduce infinitely many massive vector fields
into a U(1) gauge theory to construct a theory with UV-finiteness and

A 20 Thousand Solar Mass Black Hole in the Stellar Cluster G1
We present the detection of a 2.0(+1.4,-0.8)x10^4 solar mass black hole (BH)
in the stellar cluster G1 (Mayall II), based on data taken with the Space
Telescope Imaging Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. G1 is one of
the most massive stellar clusters in M31. The central velocity dispersion (25
kms) and the measured BH mass of G1 places it on a linear extrapolation of the
correlation between BH mass and bulge velocity dispersion established for
nearby galaxies. The detection of a BH in this low-mass stellar system suggests
that (1) the most likely candidates for seed massive BHs come from stellar
clusters, (2) there is a direct link between massive stellar clusters and
normal galaxies, and (3) the formation process of both bulges and massive
clusters is similar due to their concordance in the M_BH/sigma relation.

Discovery of Radio Emission from the Tight M8 Binary: LP 349-25
We present radio observations of 8 ultracool dwarfs with a narrow spectral
type range (M8-M9.5) using the Very Large Array at 8.5 GHz. Only the tight M8
binary LP 349-25 was detected. LP 349-25 is the tenth ultracool dwarf system
detected in radio and its trigonometric parallax pi = 67.6 mas, recently
measured by Gatewood et al., makes it the furthest ultracool system detected by
the Very Large Array to date, and the most radio-luminous outside of obvious
flaring activity or variability. With a separation of only 1.8 AU, masses of
the components of LP 349-25 can be measured precisely without any theoretical
assumptions (Forveille et al.), allowing us to clarify their fully-convective
status and hence the kind of magnetic dynamo in these components which may play
an important role to explain our detection of radio emission from these
objects. This also makes LP 349-25 an excellent target for further studies with
better constraints on the correlations between X-ray, radio emission and
stellar parameters such as mass, age, temperature, and luminosity in ultracool

Characterization Of Thermal Stresses And Plasticity In Through-Silicon Via Structures For Three-Dimensional Integration
Through-silicon via (TSV) is a critical element connecting stacked dies in three-dimensional (3D) integration. The mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients between the Cu via and Si can generate significant stresses in the TSV structure to cause reliability problems. In this study, the thermal stress in the TSV structure was measured by the wafer curvature method and its unique stress characteristics were compared to that of a Cu thin film structure. The thermo-mechanical characteristics of the Cu TSV structure were correlated to microstructure evolution during thermal cycling and the local plasticity in Cu in a triaxial stress state. These findings were confirmed by microstructure analysis of the Cu vias and finite element analysis (FEA) of the stress characteristics. In addition, the local plasticity and deformation in and around individual TSVs were measured by synchrotron x-ray microdiffraction to supplement the wafer curvature measurements. The importance and implication of the local plasticity and residual stress on TSV reliabilities are discussed for TSV extrusion and device keep-out zone (KOZ).Microelectronics Research Cente
