    Adult morphology and redescription of Lestidiops indopacificus (Ege, 1953), with comments on the features of related species (Teleostei, Aulopiformes, Paralepididae)

    Two specimens representing the first known adults of Lestidiops indopacificus (Ege, 1953) are reported and described from Taiwan, and the validity and generic assignment of this species are confirmed. The origin of the pelvic fin directly below the dorsal-fin base shows that L. indopacificus belongs to the L. mirabilis species complex. It can be separated from its congeners by the position of the nostrils above the posterior end of the maxilla, the light body color with unevenly distributed melanophores in adults, and a distinct combination of meristic values and other morphological characteristics. New geographic records are reported for the two other current members of this species complex, L. mirabilis (Ege, 1933) and L. extremus (Ege, 1953).     Optimising antimicrobial prescription in hospitals by introducing an antimicrobial stewardship programme in Hong Kong: Consensus statement

    Objective. To discuss the implementation of an 'antimicrobial stewardship programme' as a means to improve the quality of antimicrobial use in a hospital setting in Hong Kong. Participants. Consensus working group on 'antimicrobial stewardship programme', The Scientific Committee on Infection Control, Centre for Health Protection, Department of Health, comprised 11 experts. The remit of the working group was to discuss the rationale and requirement for optimising antimicrobial prescriptions in hospitals by the introduction of an 'antimicrobial stewardship programme'. Evidence. PubMed articles, national and international guidelines, and abstracts of international meetings published between January 2000 and December 2004 on programmes for improving the use of antimicrobials in hospitals. Only English medical literature was reviewed. Consensus process. Data search was performed independently by three members of the working group. They met on three occasions before the meeting to discuss all collected articles. A final draft was circulated to the working group before a meeting on 3 January 2005. Five commonly asked questions about an 'antimicrobial stewardship programme' were selected for discussion by the participants. Published information on the rationale, components, outcome measures, advantages, and disadvantages of the programme was reviewed. Recent unpublished data from local studies of an 'antimicrobial stewardship programme' were also discussed. The timing, potential problems, and practical issues involved in the implementation of an 'antimicrobial stewardship programme' in Hong Kong were then considered. The consensus statement was circulated to and approved by all participants. Conclusion. The continuous indiscriminate and excessive use of antimicrobial agents promotes the emergence of antibiotic-resistant organisms. Antimicrobial resistance substantially raises already-rising health care costs and increases patient morbidity and mortality. Pattern of prescriptions in hospitals can be improved through the implementation of an 'antimicrobial stewardship programme'. A 'universal' and 'continuous' 'antimicrobial stewardship programme' should now be established in Hong Kong hospitals.published_or_final_versio

    Thermal comfort and energy performance of public rental housing under typical and near-extreme weather conditions in Hong Kong

    © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Building performance evaluation is crucial for sustainable urban developments. In high-density cities, occupants suffer from poor living conditions due to building overheating, especially during increasingly frequent near-extreme summer conditions caused by climate change. To represent this situation, the summer reference year weather data was employed for building simulations using DesignBuilder. This study aims to evaluate the thermal comfort and energy consumption of four typical public rental housing (PRH) building types in Hong Kong. For free-running flats, results show generally higher air temperatures in the oldest PRH type (Slab) with a compact linear building form and the most sensitive response to outdoor temperature changes for another older PRH type (Trident) with a Y-shaped design, possibly owing to its high wall conductivity. Occupants in all building types experience a ???10% increase in the proportion of discomfort hours when compared to results for typical summer conditions, but overheating is the most severe in Slab type PRH. Following an initial assessment of the cooling energy usage, a simple sensitivity test was conducted to explore the potential energy savings by various passive design strategies, including shading and reducing the exposed cooled space. A cross-shaped building form also appears to be more energy efficient. These findings, complemented by further parametric analyses, may prove useful when designing buildings for climate change

Residents of the dense urban environment in Hong Kong suffer from poor living conditions due to building overheating, especially during near-extreme summer conditions. Results show that the oldest Slab type PRH, which has a compact building form, has the highest indoor air temperature, yet the lowest cooling energy demand.     Genetic Elimination of Connective Tissue Growth Factor in the Forebrain Affects Subplate Neurons in the Cortex and Oligodendrocytes in the Underlying White Matter

    Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is a secreted extracellular matrix-associated protein, which play a role in regulating various cellular functions. Although the expression of CTGF has been reported in the cortical subplate, its function is still not clear. Thus, to explore the significance of CTGF in the brain, we created a forebrain-specific Ctgf knockout (FbCtgf KO) mouse model. By crossing Ctgffl/fl mice with Emx1-Cre transgenic mice, in which the expression of Cre is prenatally initiated, the full length Ctgf is removed in the forebrain structures. In young adult (2–3 months old) FbCtgf KO mice, subplate markers such as Nurr1 and Cplx3 are still expressed in the cortical layer VIb; however, the density of the subplate neurons is increased. Interestingly, in these mutants, we found a reduced structural complexity in the subplate neurons. The distribution patterns of neurons and glial cells, examined by immunohistochemistry, are comparable between genotypes in the somatosensory cortex. However, increased densities of mature oligodendrocytes, but not immature ones, were noticed in the external capsule underneath the cortical layer VIb in young adult FbCtgf KO mice. The features of myelinated axons in the external capsule were then examined using electron microscopy. Unexpectedly, the thickness of the myelin sheath was reduced in middle-aged (>12 months old), but not young adult FbCtgf KO mice. Our results suggest a secretory function of the subplate neurons, through the release of CTGF, which regulates the density and dendritic branching of subplate neurons as well as the maturation and function of nearby oligodendrocytes in the white matter

This analog of self-adjointness allows properties familiar from conservative systems to be recovered, e.g., eigenvectors are "orthogonal" under the bilinear map and obey sum rules, initial-value problems are readily solved and perturbation theory applies to the_complex_ eigenvalues.     Screening for eukaryotic signal transduction and Mycobacterium isocitrate lyase inhibitor from actinomycetes and fungi of dipterocarp rain forests at Imabak Valey, Sabah, Malaysia

    A diversity of actinomycetes and fungi was isolated from various sites during the Imbak Valley Scientific Expedition 2000. A total of 144 soil samples were collected under trees that have been identified to species or genus level. Imbak Valley is a lowland dipterocarp forest, which is interestingly dominated by Dryobalanops beccarii. Isolation of Streptomyces and non-Streptomyces actinomycetes on HV medium and other specific isolation media for non-Streptomyces yielded 203 isolates from 89 soil samples. Morphological characterisation of the isolated actinomycetes was carried out based on aerial mycelium colour, substrate mycelium colour and diffusible pigment production on oatmeal medium. Nine strains of fungi were isolated from the six soil samples plated on PDA medium. All actinomycetes isolates were grown under aerobic condition in liquid culture and extracted with acetone, and used for screening against proteins involved eukaryotic signal transduction. Yeast MAPK kinase and MAP kinase phosphatase were some of the targeted proteins used in this research. MKK1P386 and MKK1P386-MSG5 mutant yeasts were used to screen for these inhibitors, as these yeast kinase and phosphatase have homologous proteins in the MAP kinase signal transduction pathway in human. No inhibitors in the extracts were found in these screenings. Type 1 protein serine/ threonine phosphatase (GLC7) in yeast was used to screen inhibitors against PP1 inhibitors and no inhibitor was found. None of the fungal extracts showed any inhibitory activities in all the screening systems. No Ras/Raf inhibitor was found in the in vivo Ras/Raf interaction with the yeast two-hybrid screening system, which used to screen for inhibitor against Ras/ Raf protein interaction inhibitor. There were 11 actinomycetes extracts that showed toxicity against yeast strain LZ (transformant of Ras/ Raf). H7667, a Streptomycete toxic to yeast is further screened for inhibitors of the GSK3-beta pathway. H7763, a Streptomyces species that showed positive in the primary screen for inhibitor of isocitrate lyase (ICL) which is not itaconic acid (known ICL inhibitor). H7240 showed the strongest susceptibility towards the resin in which the concentration of 5g/l of resin is sufficient to produce growth inhibition of the bacteria
