Information-Sharing and Strategy by Food Industry Firms

This study investigates the strategic behaviour of food industry firms. Its two goals are to: (i) characterise strategies being employed; and (ii) identify distinct approaches to information-sharing Data from an interview-format survey of Danish food industry firms are used to characterise strategy at two levels: 11 “strategic orientations”; each of which is composed of 3-6 of a total 57 “strategic actions”. Principal components were identified and two complementary cluster analysis techniques were used to assemble clusters that are composed of firms either with distinct strategies, or sets of strategies occurring in distinct combinations. Eight clusters emerge, with reasonable procedural performance. The clusters are distinct in a surprisingly large number of ways, including their strategies for market share, pricing, approach and response to regulation, exports and use of retailers’ own-label brands. Information-sharing strategies are closely linked to both marketing strategy and regulation response/anticipation. Individual clusters identify distinct sets of behaviour regarding information-sharing up and/or down the value chain, their approach to quality and other aspects of market segmentation, targeting of export markets, and willingness to compete on price. Clusters’ distinct strategies regarding regulation featured anticipation, as opposed to several diverse means of passing on compliance costs: to buyers or to sellers. Such activities were linked to information-sharing strategies in different ways by different clusters.Agribusiness, Agricultural and Food Policy, Farm Management, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Industrial Organization,

Determination of volatile N and urea N in fish by means of microdiffusion and distillation in vacuo.

Being quantitatively equal the two independent analytical manners of proceeding, viz. distillation in vacuo and microdiffusion after the Conwayprinciple, are recommended for the estimation of different forms of volatile N and urea N. The two methods fill each other out, the distillation in vacuo being a typical rapid method while estimations performed in Conway units are well fit for mass analyses. Sera made at pH= 5,2 either by means of hydrochloric acid or by colloidal iron were used during these investigations. Analytical data showing the content of total volatile N, trimethylamine N and urea N in fresh and stored fish, also in the salted, smoked and frozen state, are given

    New screened indicators

ENGLISH The absorption maxima of the "pure" and "screened" indicators methylred, bromophenolred and phenolred with the dye xylene-cyanolblue FF are compared. The screened indicators have the pure ones at advantage the more easely perceptible change green-grey-red compared with yellow-orange-red. The influence of pure and screened methylred on the colour of colonies of certain microorganisms is shown

Modern nucleon-nucleon potentials and symmetry energy in infinite matter

    Get PDF
We study the symmetry energy in infinite nuclear matter employing a non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach and using various new nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials, which fit np and pp scattering data very accurately. The potential models we employ are the recent versions of the Nijmegen group, Nijm-I, Nijm-II and Reid93, the Argonne V18V_{18} potential and the CD-Bonn potential. All these potentials yield a symmetry energy which increases with density, resolving a discrepancy that existed for older NN potentials. The origin of remaining differences is discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures included, elsevier latex style epsart.st
