    Hole on a stripe in a spinless fermion model

    In the spinless fermion model on a square lattice with infinite nearest-neighbor repulsion, holes doped into the half-filled ordered state form stripes which, at low doping, are stable against phase separation into an ordered state and a hole-rich metal. Here we consider transport of additional holes along these stripes. The motion of a single hole on a stripe is mapped to a one-dimensional problem, a variational wavefunction is constructed and the energy spectrum is calculated and compared to energies obtained by exact diagonalization.Comment: 7 Pages, 6 figures; Revised version accepted for publication in Europhysics Letter

    The Affective Medium and Ideal Person in Pedagogies of 'Soft Skills' in Contemporary China

    In this dissertation I explore the role of affect in practices of self-improvement in contemporary urban China. I conducted participant observation in workshops for young adults in the city of Jinan, focusing on interpersonal ‘soft’ skills, such as ‘communication,’ ‘emotional expression,’ and public speaking. These highly interactive workshops urged participants to express themselves as emotional, assertive, inspirational, and above all – autonomous – individuals. This ideal of personhood is inspired by state-promoted reforms in the education system and the rise of psychotherapy across China, highlighting new moral imperatives of self-reliance and emotional well-being in the expanding Chinese market economy. My analysis focuses on the discrepancy between participants’ ideals of self-improvement, as practiced in workshops, and their wider social engagements. While participants conceived of soft skills as capacities that could potentially be employed anywhere, they nevertheless experienced and emphasised impediments to extending their practices outside workshops. They saw their everyday social circles as prioritising hierarchical relations, social roles, and financial stability, all suppressing the ideals of individual autonomy prominent in workshops. Drawing on theories of affect, hope, and the concept of ‘heterotopia,’ I describe how workshops dislocated participants from their existing social realities to produce momentary experiences of self-overcoming. Through affectively intensive exercises, participants identified with their ideal person, imagined themselves mastering social relations, and envisioned a future society governed by the virtues of soft skills. I consider affect, in these practices, not as a means for subjects’ comprehensive self-transformations, but rather as an experience that charges individuals with ephemeral optimism amidst socioeconomic uncertainties. In contemporary market-driven China, I argue, such deployment of affect is increasingly evident in educational activities, entertainment media, and state campaigns. These practices respond to and reinforce an existing schism between the expansion of new ideals of personhood and individuals’ limited capacities to realise them

    I consider the class of "depleted pyrochlore" lattices of corner-sharing triangles, made by removing spins from a pyrochlore lattice such that every tetrahedron loses exactly one. Previously known examples are the "hyperkagome" and "kagome staircase". I give criteria in terms of loops for whether a given depleted lattice can order analogous to the kagome \sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{three} state, and also show how the pseudo-dipolar correlations (due to local constraints) generalize to even the random depleted case.Comment: 6pp IOP latex, 1 figure; Proc.     The mature reverse transcriptase molecules in virions of mouse mammary tumor virus possess protease-derived sequences

    AbstractOur efforts to express in bacteria the enzymatically active reverse transcriptase (RT) of mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) have shown that the RT is active only after adding 27 amino acid residues, which are derived from the end of the pro gene, to the amino-terminus of the RT (Biochem, J. (1998) 329, 579–587). In the present study we have tested whether the mature RT found in virions is also fused to protease-derived sequences. To this end, we have analyzed the RT molecules in virions of MMTV by using two antisera directed against peptides, derived from either the carboxyl-terminus of MMTV protease or the middle of MMTV RT. The data suggest that the mature RT, located in virions, contains at its amino-terminus sequences from the carboxyl-terminus of the protease protein. This finding supports previous suggestions that MMTV RT is a transframe protein (derived from both pro and pol reading frames of MMTV) and that amino acid residues located at the carboxyl-terminus of the protease have a dual usage as integral parts of both the protease and the RT enzymes

    Semiclassical ordering in the large-N pyrochlore antiferromagnet

    We study the semiclassical limit of the Sp(N)Sp(N) generalization of the pyrochlore lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet by expanding about the NN \to \infty saddlepoint in powers of a generalized inverse spin. To leading order, we write down an effective Hamiltonian as a series in loops on the lattice. Using this as a formula for calculating the energy of any classical ground state, we perform Monte-Carlo simulations and find a unique collinear ground state. This state is not a ground state of linear spin-wave theory, and can therefore not be a physical (N=1) semiclassical ground state.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figures; published versio

    Reverse transcriptases can clamp together nucleic acids strands with two complementary bases at their 3′-termini for initiating DNA synthesis

    We present evidence that the reverse transcriptase (RT) of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 stabilizes in vitro very short (2-nt) duplexes of 3′-overhangs of the primer strand that are annealed to complementary dinucleotides tails of DNA or RNA template strands, provided that these sequences contain at least one C or G. This RT-induced strand ‘clamping’ activity promotes RT-directed DNA synthesis. This function is achieved only when the functional template strand is adjacent to a second DNA or RNA segment, annealed upstream to most of the primer (without gaps). The combined clamp/polymerase activity is typical to RTs, as it was found in different RTs from diverse retroviral groups, whereas cellular DNA-polymerases (devoid of 3′→5′ exonucleolytic activity) showed no clamp activity. The clamp-associated DNA-binding activity is markedly stabilized by dGTP, even when dGTP is not incorporated into the nascent DNA strand. The hereby-described function can help RTs in bridging over nicks in the copied RNA or DNA templates, encountered during reverse transcription. Moreover, the template-independent blunt-end synthesis of RTs can allow strand transfers onto compatible acceptor strands while synthesizing DNA. These RT properties can shed light on potentially-new roles of RTs in the reverse-transcription process and define new targets for anti-retroviral drugs

    A Prediction Model to Prioritize Individuals for a SARS-CoV-2 Test Built from National Symptom Surveys

    Background: The gold standard for COVID-19 diagnosis is detection of viral RNA through PCR. Due to global limitations in testing capacity, effective prioritization of individuals for testing is essential. Methods: We devised a model estimating the probability of an individual to test positive for COVID-19 based on answers to 9 simple questions that have been associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our model was devised from a subsample of a national symptom survey that was answered over 2 million times in Israel in its first 2 months and a targeted survey distributed to all residents of several cities in Israel. Overall, 43,752 adults were included, from which 498 self-reported as being COVID-19 positive. Findings: Our model was validated on a held-out set of individuals from Israel where it achieved an auROC of 0.737 (CI: 0.712–0.759) and auPR of 0.144 (CI: 0.119–0.177) and demonstrated its applicability outside of Israel in an independently collected symptom survey dataset from the US, UK, and Sweden. Our analyses revealed interactions between several symptoms and age, suggesting variation in the clinical manifestation of the disease in different age groups. Conclusions: Our tool can be used online and without exposure to suspected patients, thus suggesting worldwide utility in combating COVID-19 by better directing the limited testing resources through prioritization of individuals for testing, thereby increasing the rate at which positive individuals can be identified. Moreover, individuals at high risk for a positive test result can be isolated prior to testing.
