Exploring the efficacy of the Expiratory Muscle Strength Trainer to improve swallowing in Inclusion Body Myositis: A pilot study
Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM) is the most common acquired myopathy in older individuals with more than two thirds of patients experiencing impaired swallowing. There are currently no standardized exercise therapies to improve or sustain swallowing despite good evidence for exercise therapy in limb muscles. Reduced upper esophageal sphincter (UES) opening is a common abnormality associated with dysphagia in IBM. This pilot study recruited IBM patients with abnormal UES function and dysphagia into an exercise program. It was hypothesised that regular practice using the Expiratory Muscle Strength Trainer (EMST) device would improve hyolaryngeal movement by strengthening suprahyoid musculature and facilitate opening of the UES thereby improving swallowing and quality of life. Overall, IBM patients who used the EMST device demonstrated no improvement in swallowing function. Consistent with that result, there was also no change in measures of quality of life. However, further studies are needed to elucidate whether it has a preventative role in the development or progression of dysphagia in IBM as there is a suggestion that patients with a shorter duration of disease may have had some benefit. This research provides pilot data and recommendations that will guide future studies on exercise therapy and swallowing in this area
Sampling locality is more detectable than taxonomy or ecology in the gut microbiota of the brood-parasitic Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater)
Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) are the most widespread avian brood parasite in North America, laying their eggs in the nests of approximately 250 host species that raise the cowbird nestlings as their own. It is currently unknown how these heterospecific hosts influence the cowbird gut microbiota relative to other factors, such as the local environment and genetics. We test a Nature Hypothesis (positing the importance of cowbird genetics) and a Nurture Hypothesis (where the host parents are most influential to cowbird gut microbiota) using the V6 region of 16S rRNA as a microbial fingerprint of the gut from 32 cowbird samples and 16 potential hosts from nine species. We test additional hypotheses regarding the influence of the local environment and age of the birds.We found no evidence for the Nature Hypothesis and little support for the Nurture Hypothesis. Cowbird gut microbiota did not forma clade, but neither did members of the host species. Rather, the physical location, diet and age of the bird, whether cowbird or host, were the most significant categorical variables. Thus, passerine gut microbiota may be most strongly influenced by environmental factors. To put this variation in a broader context, we compared the bird data to a fecal microbiota dataset of 38 mammal species and 22 insect species. Insects were always the most variable; on some axes, we found more variation within cowbirds than across all mammals. The Middle Way: East Asian masters students’ perceptions of critical argumentation in U.K. universities.
The paper explores the learning experiences of East Asian masters students in dealing with Western academic norms of critical thinking in classroom debate and assignment writing. The research takes a cultural approach, and employs grounded theory and case study methodology, the aims being for students to explain their perceptions of their personal learning journeys. The data suggest that the majority of students interviewed rejected full academic acculturation into Western norms of argumentation. They instead opted for a ‘Middle Way’ that synergizes the traditional cultural academic values held by many East Asian students with those elements of Western academic norms that are perceived to be aligned with these. This is a relatively new area of research which represents a challenge for British lecturers and students

Early life mortality in East London: a feasibility study. Summary report. Fetal and Infant Death in East London
This report summarises a feasibility study for further research to increase the understanding of the causes of the high rates of stillbirth and infant mortality in East London in order to inform action aimed at reducing them. The project consisted of three parts, a review of previous research and published data, analyses of routine data derived from notification of births to women living in City and Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham and a review of case notes at the Homerton University Hospital and the Royal London Hospital relating to late fetal losses and terminations, stillbirths and infant deaths. Calculation of the properties of the rotational bands of Gd
We reexamine the long-standing problem of the microscopic derivation of a
particle-core coupling model. We base our research on the Klein-Kerman
approach, as amended by D\"onau and Frauendorf. We describe the formalism to
calculate energy spectra and transition strengths in some detail. We apply our
formalism to the rotational nuclei Gd, where recent experimental
data requires an explanation. We find no clear evidence of a need for Coriolis

Many Body Theory of Charge Transfer in Hyperthermal Atomic Scattering
We use the Newns-Anderson Hamiltonian to describe many-body electronic
processes that occur when hyperthermal alkali atoms scatter off metallic
surfaces. Following Brako and Newns, we expand the electronic many-body
wavefunction in the number of particle-hole pairs (we keep terms up to and
including a single particle-hole pair). We extend their earlier work by
including level crossings, excited neutrals and negative ions. The full set of
equations of motion are integrated numerically, without further approximations,
to obtain the many-body amplitudes as a function of time. The velocity and
work-function dependence of final state quantities such as the distribution of
ion charges and excited atomic occupancies are compared with experiment. In
particular, experiments that scatter alkali ions off clean Cu(001) surfaces in
the energy range 5 to 1600 eV constrain the theory quantitatively. The
neutralization probability of Na ions shows a minimum at intermediate
velocity in agreement with the theory. This behavior contrasts with that of
