    Exploring Learning Problems of Filipino Nurse Candidates Working in Japan: Based on the Results of a Practice National Board Examination of Japan Given in English

    This article investigates the status of the education and training of Filipino nurse candidates who have been working in Japan under the Japan-Philippine Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA). A survey was conducted among Filipino nurse candidates, using a practice examination based on the English version of Japan’s National Board Examination for Registered Nurses in 2009. Categorized by area, the mean correct answer rate for nursing-related questions ranged between 61% and 73%; the rate for questions concerning basic knowledge of body functions and diseases ranged between 55% and 57%. There was a large gap in terms of the results of the examination between those who had previously seen the exam questions and those who had never seen them. While 57.1% of those who had previously seen the questions satisfied the acceptance criteria, only 23.7%of those who had never viewed the test satisfied it. Based on these results, the factors which serve as obstacles that Filipino nurse candidates encounter in passing the national examination include not only difficulties in acquiring Japanese proficiency but also differences between Japan and the Philippines in respect to the nursing education curriculum and basic nursing policies

    A study on the cost and willingness to recruit EPA foreign nurses and care workers in Japan: from the angle of hospitals and care facilities

    Japan started accepting foreign nurses and care workers under the Economic Partnership Agreement( EPA) in FY 2008. However, the number has been declining since FY2009 despite improved conditions. Many pointed out that the decline occurred mainly due to the constraints of supply side because the conditionality set by the EPA looked so strict for foreign workers. This paper highlights a problem of demand side ? economic cost for the hospitals and care facilities( the employers). A questionnaire survey was conducted and used for examining a hypothesis that high costs for the employers were a major cause of the decline. The survey revealed that employing the candidates required high economic costs including additional staff labor. Majority of employers indicated unwillingness to recruit further EPA candidates. However, statistical tests proved no significant relations between the costs and the willingness for nurses, while some positive relationships were confirmed for care workers. It suggests that non-economic factors exert strong influence on the demand for nurses. The current EPA system needs substantial modifications including easing conditionality and reducing economic costs for employers

    Rpd3/CoRest-mediated activity-dependent transcription regulates the flexibility in memory updating in Drosophila

    Consolidated memory can be preserved or updated depending on the environmental change. Although such conflicting regulation may happen during memory updating, the flexibility of memory updating may have already been determined in the initial memory consolidation process. Here, we explored the gating mechanism for activity-dependent transcription in memory consolidation, which is unexpectedly linked to the later memory updating in Drosophila. Through proteomic analysis, we discovered that the compositional change in the transcriptional repressor, which contains the histone deacetylase Rpd3 and CoRest, acts as the gating mechanism that opens and closes the time window for activity-dependent transcription. Opening the gate through the compositional change in Rpd3/CoRest is required for memory consolidation, but closing the gate through Rpd3/CoRest is significant to limit future memory updating. Our data indicate that the flexibility of memory updating is determined through the initial activity-dependent transcription, providing a mechanism involved in defining memory state

    It is a pleasure for us to present this book, with the contributions of the Inter- national Symposium Rethinking Nature in Japan: from Tradition to Modernity held at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice in the Auditorium Santa Margherita. This was the Second International Conference organized in Venice: in 2013 we celebrated the first Symposium Rethinking Nature in Contemporary Japan. Science, Economics, Politics, published by Edizioni Cafoscari in 2014. The aim of the Symposium was the analysis of Japanese society and the international relationships after the accident at Fukushima nuclear plant in March 2011. Its wide-ranging consequences on everyday life of Japanese citizens brought into the limelight issues such as the protection of the environment, the man- agement of natural resources, and food safety, both within the country and abroad, as fundamental challenges to our globalised society. In 2013, the participation of scholars from Europe, Japan and United States helped us to achieve a deeper insight into this multifaceted issue, combining several disciplines under a multidisciplinary and comparative approach. At the root of all these problems stand the basic theme of the relation between man and nature. Historically, Japan has developed through the centuries an extremely rich tradition on this complex topic, in the intel- lectual field as well as in terms of material culture. That is the reason why we decided to choose as the theme of this Sym- posium in 2014 the cultural representations of the idea of Nature in the transition from tradition to modernity. This Symposium, “Rethinking Nature in Japan: From Tradition to Mo- dernity”, was centered on Fine Arts, Religion and Thought, Literature, Theatre and Cinema. We had four panel sessions: “Nature and Environment in Japanese Fine Arts: from Tradition to Modernity”, in Japanese Literature, in Japanese Thought and in Performing Arts. First of all, as a representative of Ca’ Foscari University and of our colleagues, we would like to thank all students, guests and colleagues for their presence at the Symposium, and thank also our special guests from Japan, from the United State, from Europe and from Italy for their (pre- cious) contributions. We believe for all the participants [students, scholars, lecturers, for you and for us] our Symposium was very interesting and fruitful and we hope that the same will be also for this book We would like to thank the representatives of our University, the Rector of Ca’ Foscari University, prof.     がん検診啓発活動を通しての看護学生の学び

    がん医療の向上に向けて、地域でがんの検診啓発活動に取り組む看護学生の自主グループが誕生し、正課外活動として取り組んでいる。地域の健康課題「がん」に関する、啓発活動に取り組む看護学生の学びをインタビューから質的に分析し、明らかにした。学生は〈関係づくりとしてのネットワーク構築の重要性〉〈専門職者を目指した自己研鑽〉〈コミュニケーション能力の向上〉〈問題発見・解決と企画力の向上〉〈倫理観・責任感を伴った行動の必要性〉〈社会性形成と自己理解〉の6カテゴリー、30サブカテゴリーについて学んでいた。授業時間以外の自主的な学習を促進する正課外活動の重要性が示唆された

    平成19年度に採択された文部科学省「現代的教育ニーズ取組プログラム」の後継事業として、地域を基盤とする看護教育の柱である学生・市民・大学・保健医療福祉行政の4者間のつながりを促進・サポートする拠点として「地域連携ステーション」を本学において継続させてきた。 今回は、「教育力向上」「地域活性化」を目指した活動状況をまとめた。地域連携ステーションが地域に開かれた窓口であり続けるためには、連携に必要な“支援”と“調整”のための技術を磨き続けることが大切であると考えられた

    自主グループを活用した看護教育に取り組むにあたり、グループの誕生・発展のために必要とされる支援の方向性を見出すとともに、 自主グループと看護教育の連携の実際を学ぶことを目的に、セルフヘルプ・グループ(以下SHG)発祥の地アメリカ視察を行った。SHGの活動および関係機関の視察、 また関係者との意見交換を通して、当事者の理解を深め、行政でも補えない隙間の支援を行なう人々と活動状況を理解することができた。またグループの特殊性を考慮した上での看護職に望まれる役割を再考する機会となり得た
