    Calculation of the separation streamlines of barchans and transverse dunes

    We use FLUENT to calculate the wind profile over barchans and transverse dunes. The form of the streamlines of flow separation at the lee side of the dunes is determined for a symmetric barchan dune in three dimensions, and for the height profile of a measured transverse dune field in the Len\c{c}\'ois Maranhenses.Comment: 6 pages including 5 figures.     Utility of correlation techniques in gravity and magnetic interpretation

    Internal correspondence uses Poisson's Theorem in a moving-window linear regression analysis between the anomalous first vertical derivative of gravity and total magnetic field reduced to the pole. The regression parameters provide critical information on source characteristics. The correlation coefficient indicates the strength of the relation between magnetics and gravity. Slope value gives delta j/delta sigma estimates of the anomalous source. The intercept furnishes information on anomaly interference. Cluster analysis consists of the classification of subsets of data into groups of similarity based on correlation of selected characteristics of the anomalies. Model studies are used to illustrate implementation and interpretation procedures of these methods, particularly internal correspondence. Analysis of the results of applying these methods to data from the midcontinent and a transcontinental profile shows they can be useful in identifying crustal provinces, providing information on horizontal and vertical variations of physical properties over province size zones, validating long wavelength anomalies, and isolating geomagnetic field removal problems

Model studies are used to illustrate implementation and interpretation procedures of these methods, particularly internal correspondence. Analysis of the results of applying these methods to data from the midcontinent and a transcontinental profile show they can be useful in identifying crustal provinces, providing information on horizontal and vertical variations of physical properties over province size zones, validating long wave-length anomalies, and isolating geomagnetic field removal problems. Thus, these techniques are useful in considering regional data acquired by satellites

    Single-charge escape processes through a hybrid turnstile in a dissipative environment

    We have investigated the static, charge-trapping properties of a hybrid superconductor---normal metal electron turnstile embedded into a high-ohmic environment. The device includes a local Cr resistor on one side of the turnstile, and a superconducting trapping island on the other side. The electron hold times, t ~ 2-20s, in our two-junction circuit are comparable with those of typical multi-junction, N >= 4, normal-metal single-electron tunneling devices. A semi-phenomenological model of the environmental activation of tunneling is applied for the analysis of the switching statistics.     Intermittency and structure functions in channel flow turbulence

    We present a study of intermittency in a turbulent channel flow. Scaling exponents of longitudinal streamwise structure functions, ζp/ζ3\zeta_p /\zeta_3, are used as quantitative indicators of intermittency. We find that, near the center of the channel the values of ζp/ζ3\zeta_p /\zeta_3 up to p=7p=7 are consistent with the assumption of homogeneous/isotropic turbulence. Moving towards the boundaries, we observe a growth of intermittency which appears to be related to an intensified presence of ordered vortical structures. In fact, the behaviour along the normal-to-wall direction of suitably normalized scaling exponents shows a remarkable correlation with the local strength of the Reynolds stress and with the \rms value of helicity density fluctuations. We argue that the clear transition in the nature of intermittency appearing in the region close to the wall, is related to a new length scale which becomes the relevant one for scaling in high shear flows.Comment: 4 pages, 6 eps figure
