    Transverse-Longitudinal Coupling by Space Charge in Cyclotrons

    A method is presented that enables to compute the parameters of matched beams with space charge in cyclotrons with emphasis on the effect of the transverse-longitudinal coupling. Equations describing the transverse-longitudinal coupling and corresponding tune-shifts in first order are derived for the model of an azimuthally symmetric cyclotron. The eigenellipsoid of the beam is calculated and the transfer matrix is transformed into block-diagonal form. The influence of the slope of the phase curve on the transverse-longitudinal coupling is accounted for. The results are generalized and numerical procedures for the case of an AVF cyclotron are presented. The algorithm is applied to the PSI Injector II and Ring cyclotron and the results are compared to TRANSPORT.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

    A Geometrical Method of Decoupling

    The computation of tunes and matched beam distributions are essential steps in the analysis of circular accelerators. If certain symmetries - like midplane symmetrie - are present, then it is possible to treat the betatron motion in the horizontal, the vertical plane and (under certain circumstances) the longitudinal motion separately using the well-known Courant-Snyder theory, or to apply transformations that have been described previously as for instance the method of Teng and Edwards. In a preceeding paper it has been shown that this method requires a modification for the treatment of isochronous cyclotrons with non-negligible space charge forces. Unfortunately the modification was numerically not as stable as desired and it was still unclear, if the extension would work for all thinkable cases. Hence a systematic derivation of a more general treatment seemed advisable. In a second paper the author suggested the use of real Dirac matrices as basic tools to coupled linear optics and gave a straightforward recipe to decouple positive definite Hamiltonians with imaginary eigenvalues. In this article this method is generalized and simplified in order to formulate a straightforward method to decouple Hamiltonian matrices with eigenvalues on the real and the imaginary axis. It is shown that this algebraic decoupling is closely related to a geometric "decoupling" by the orthogonalization of the vectors E⃗\vec E, B⃗\vec B and P⃗\vec P, that were introduced with the so-called "electromechanical equivalence". We present a structure-preserving block-diagonalization of symplectic or Hamiltonian matrices, respectively. When used iteratively, the decoupling algorithm can also be applied to n-dimensional systems and requires O(n2){\cal O}(n^2) iterations to converge to a given precision.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur

    Lambda-N scattering length from the reaction gamma d -> K^+ Lambda n

    The perspects of utilizing the strangeness-production reaction gamma d -> K^+ Lambda n for the determination of the Lambda n low-energy scattering parameters are investigated. The spin observables that need to be measured in order to isolate the Lambda n singlet (1S0) and triplet (3S1) states are identified. Possible kinematical regions where the extraction of the Lambda n scattering lengths might be feasible are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Study of the pd→3HeK+K−pd\to ^3\textrm{He} K^+K^- and pd→3Heϕpd\to ^3\textrm{He} \phi reactions close to threshold

    Two--kaon production in proton--deuteron collisions has been studied at three energies close to threshold using a calibrated magnetic spectrograph to measure the final 3^3He and a vertex detector to measure the K+K−K^+K^- pair. Differential and total cross sections are presented for the production of ϕ\phi--mesons, decaying through ϕ→K+K−\phi\to K^+K^-, as well as for prompt K+K−K^+K^- production. The prompt production seems to follow phase space in both its differential distributions and in its energy dependence. The amplitude for the pd→3pd\to ^3{He}ϕ \phi reaction varies little for excess energies below 22 MeV and the value is consistent with that obtained from a threshold measurement. The angular distribution of the K+K−K^+K^- decay pair shows that near threshold the ϕ\phi--mesons are dominantly produced with polarization m=0m=0 along the initial proton direction. No conclusive evidence for f0(980)f_0(980) production is found in the data.Comment: 13 figure

    Aplastic Crisis as Primary Manifestation of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

    Aplastic crisis is an unusual feature of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We report the case of a 54-year-old woman presenting with both (extravascular) Coombs-positive hemolytic anemia and laboratory findings of bone marrow hyporegeneration with concomitant severe neutropenia. A bone marrow biopsy confirmed aplastic crisis. Diagnostic work-up revealed soaring titers of autoantibodies (anti-nuclear, anti-double-stranded DNA, anti-cardiolipin-IgM, and anti-beta 2-glykoprotein-IgM antibodies), indicating a connective tissue disease as the most plausible reason for bone marrow insufficiency. As the criteria for SLE were fulfilled, we initiated an immunosuppressive therapy by steroids, which led to a rapid complete hematologic and clinical remission in our patient. In this case, we could report on one of the rare cases of SLE-induced aplastic crisis showing that this condition can be entirely reversed by immunosuppressive treatment and that SLE-induced aplastic crisis yields a good prognosis. In conclusion, in a case of aplastic crisis, physicians should be aware that SLE can be a rare cause that is accessible to specific treatment

    Measurement of Spin Correlation Parameters ANN_{NN}, ASS_{SS}, and A_SL{SL} at 2.1 GeV in Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering

    At the Cooler Synchrotron COSY/J\"ulich spin correlation parameters in elastic proton-proton (pp) scattering have been measured with a 2.11 GeV polarized proton beam and a polarized hydrogen atomic beam target. We report results for ANN_{NN}, ASS_{SS}, and A_SL{SL} for c.m. scattering angles between 30o^o and 90o^o. Our data on ASS_{SS} -- the first measurement of this observable above 800 MeV -- clearly disagrees with predictions of available of pp scattering phase shift solutions while ANN_{NN} and A_SL{SL} are reproduced reasonably well. We show that in the direct reconstruction of the scattering amplitudes from the body of available pp elastic scattering data at 2.1 GeV the number of possible solutions is considerably reduced.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Spin and Isospin Effects in the NN -> NK Lambda Reaction Near Threshold

    The spin and isospin structure of the amplitudes and observables for K+Lambda production in nucleon-nucleon collisions in the near-threshold region is analysed. It is shown that, with reasonable values for the relative strengths of the pi and rho terms in a meson-exchange model, one expects production on the neutron to be significantly stronger than that on the proton. Negative values of the spin-transfer coefficient D_NN are also predicted due to pi-rho interference.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, using the EPJA style file

    A combined first and second order variational approach for image reconstruction

    In this paper we study a variational problem in the space of functions of bounded Hessian. Our model constitutes a straightforward higher-order extension of the well known ROF functional (total variation minimisation) to which we add a non-smooth second order regulariser. It combines convex functions of the total variation and the total variation of the first derivatives. In what follows, we prove existence and uniqueness of minimisers of the combined model and present the numerical solution of the corresponding discretised problem by employing the split Bregman method. The paper is furnished with applications of our model to image denoising, deblurring as well as image inpainting. The obtained numerical results are compared with results obtained from total generalised variation (TGV), infimal convolution and Euler's elastica, three other state of the art higher-order models. The numerical discussion confirms that the proposed higher-order model competes with models of its kind in avoiding the creation of undesirable artifacts and blocky-like structures in the reconstructed images -- a known disadvantage of the ROF model -- while being simple and efficiently numerically solvable.Comment: 34 pages, 89 figure

    Detailed comparison of the pp -> \pi^+pn and pp -> \pi^+d reactions at 951 MeV

    The positively charged pions produced in proton-proton collisions at a beam momentum of 1640 MeV/c were measured in the forward direction with a high resolution magnetic spectrograph. The missing mass distribution shows the bound state (deuteron) clearly separated from the pnpn continuum. Despite the very good resolution, there is no evidence for any significant production of the pnpn system in the spin-singlet state. However, the σ(pp→π+pn)/σ(pp→π+d)\sigma(pp\to \pi^+pn)/\sigma(pp\to \pi^+d) cross section ratio is about twice as large as that predicted from SS-wave final-state-interaction theory and it is suggested that this is due to DD-state effects in the pnpn system.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
