A New Approach to Swine Shade Construction
A project was initiated by the Agricultural Engineering Department at the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station to design a type of swine shade which would not require all the heavy timber under-framing of the current swine shade plans, and which would be actually portable. The need for such swine shelters has been established; research results from other stations have shown that some shading device, either natural or artificial, is necessary to protect swine, especially the heavier ones, from the direct heat of the sun. Extensive work conducted at California shows the effects of different types of surfaces and shade materials on the radiant heat load beneath the shade. Another report, one from Purdue University on the effectiveness of various types of shade on the growth of swine in a normal summer environment, concluded that there were no differences between materials used and no measurable effects of roof color on rate of gain of swine. While these studies may not agree on the effectiveness of different types of shading materials, their findings support the need for some type of shade for swine to maintain or improve rate of gain
Southeast Ecological Observatory Network (SEEON) Workshop on Ecological Sensors and Information Technology. Report on Second SEEON Workshop
A fundamental goal of the new National Science Foundation (NSF) initiative National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is to provide timely and broad access to the ecological data collected at NEON sites. Information management and data collection will be critical components to achieving this goal and a successful NEON implementation. The Southeast Ecological Observatory Network (SEEON) working group recognized the importance of information management and sensor technology in its first planning workshop and recommended that interested parties in the region come together to discuss these subjects in the context of the needs and capabilities of a southeast regional ecological observatory network. In February 2004, 28 participants from 14 organizations including academic institutions, state and federal agencies, private and non-profit entities convened at the Space Life Sciences Laboratory (SLSL) at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida for two days of presentations and discussions on ecological sensors and information management. Some of the participants were previously involved in the first SEEON workshop or other meetings concerned with NEON, but many were somewhat new to the NEON community. Each day focused on a different technical component, i.e. ecological sensors the first day and cyber-infrastructure the second day, and were structured in a similar manner. The mornings were devoted to presentations by experts to help stimulate discussions on aspects of the focal topic held in the afternoon. The formal and informal discussions held during the workshop succeeded in validating some concerns and needs identified in the first SEEON workshop, but also served to bring to light other questions or issues that will need to be addressed as the NEON planning and design stages move forward. While the expansion of the SEEON community meant that some of the presentation and discussion time was needed to help bring the newcomers up to speed on the goals, objectives and current status of the various NEON efforts, the additional perspectives and technical expertise included in this workshop helped fuel some valuable interdisciplinary discussions that will need to continue to bring SEEON and NEON to fruition. Participants agreed that continued discussions of SEEON are needed , to keep up the momentum and that the southeast region must continue to be represented at the national level. It is vital that the all'the regions continue to push things forward for NEON to succeed
Infrared High-Resolution Spectroscopy of Post-AGB Circumstellar Disks. I. HR 4049 - The Winnowing Flow Observed?
High-resolution infrared spectroscopy in the 2.3-4.6 micron region is
reported for the peculiar A supergiant, single-lined spectroscopic binary HR
4049. Lines from the CO fundamental and first overtone, OH fundamental, and
several H2O vibration-rotation transitions have been observed in the
near-infrared spectrum. The spectrum of HR 4049 appears principally in emission
through the 3 and 4.6 micron region and in absorption in the 2 micron region.
The 4.6 micron spectrum shows a rich 'forest' of emission lines. All the
spectral lines observed in the 2.3-4.6 micron spectrum are shown to be
circumbinary in origin. The presence of OH and H2O lines confirm the
oxygen-rich nature of the circumbinary gas which is in contrast to the
previously detected carbon-rich material. The emission and absorption line
profiles show that the circumbinary gas is located in a thin, rotating layer
near the dust disk. The properties of the dust and gas circumbinary disk and
the spectroscopic orbit yield masses for the individual stars, M_AI~0.58 Msolar
and M_MV~0.34 Msolar. Gas in the disk also has an outward flow with a velocity
of 1 km/s. The severe depletion of refractory elements but near-solar
abundances of volatile elements observed in HR 4049 results from abundance
winnowing. The separation of the volatiles from the grains in the disk and the
subsequent accretion by the star are discussed. Contrary to prior reports, the
HR 4049 carbon and oxygen isotopic abundances are typical AGB values:

Moxifloxacin Concentration and Proteomic Analysis of Aqueous Humor in Human Uveitis Associated with Oral Moxifloxacin Therapy
PURPOSE: The aim was to report the aqueous humor moxifloxacin concentration and proteome profile of an individual with bilateral uveitis-like syndrome with pigment dispersion.
METHODS: Multiple reactions monitoring mass spectrometry quantified the aqueous concentration of moxifloxacin in the affected individual. Shotgun proteomic analysis performed via liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) defined the protein profile in the affected individual and unaffected control samples.
RESULTS: Moxifloxacin was present at higher than expected levels in aqueous humor 18 days following oral administration. One-third of the proteins were identified by significantly lower spectral counts in the aqueous of the individual with moxifloxacin associated uveitis compared to the unaffected control.
CONCLUSION: Moxifloxacin was detected in aqueous humor 18 days following the completion of oral administration. These results suggest that moxifloxacin toxicity may be responsible for the uveitis-like syndrome with pigment dispersion syndrome induced by moxifloxacin therapy
Mira's wind explored in scattering infrared CO lines
We have observed the intermediate regions of the circumstellar envelope of
Mira (o Ceti) in photospheric light scattered by three vibration-rotation
transitions of the fundamental band of CO, from low-excited rotational levels
of the ground vibrational state, at an angular distance of beta = 2"-7" away
from the star. The data were obtained with the Phoenix spectrometer mounted on
the 4 m Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak. The spatial resolution is approximately
0.5" and seeing limited. Our observations provide absolute fluxes, leading to
an independent new estimate of the mass-loss rate of approximately 3e-7
Msun/yr, as derived from a simple analytic wind model. We find that the
scattered intensity from the wind of Mira for 2" < beta < 7" decreases as
beta^-3, which suggests a time constant mass-loss rate, when averaged over 100
years, over the past 1200 years.Comment: accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Mapping analysis and planning system for the John F. Kennedy Space Center
Environmental management, impact assessment, research and monitoring are multidisciplinary activities which are ideally suited to incorporate a multi-media approach to environmental problem solving. Geographic information systems (GIS), simulation models, neural networks and expert-system software are some of the advancing technologies being used for data management, query, analysis and display. At the 140,000 acre John F. Kennedy Space Center, the Advanced Software Technology group has been supporting development and implementation of a program that integrates these and other rapidly evolving hardware and software capabilities into a comprehensive Mapping, Analysis and Planning System (MAPS) based in a workstation/local are network environment. An expert-system shell is being developed to link the various databases to guide users through the numerous stages of a facility siting and environmental assessment. The expert-system shell approach is appealing for its ease of data access by management-level decision makers while maintaining the involvement of the data specialists. This, as well as increased efficiency and accuracy in data analysis and report preparation, can benefit any organization involved in natural resources management
Infrared Spectroscopy of Symbiotic Stars. IV. V2116 Ophiuchi/GX 1+4, The Neutron Star Symbiotic
We have computed, based on 17 infrared radial velocities, the first set of
orbital elements for the M giant in the symbiotic binary V2116 Ophiuchi. The
giant's companion is a neutron star, the bright X-ray source GX 1+4. We find an
orbital period of 1161 days by far the longest of any known X-ray binary. The
orbit has a modest eccentricity of 0.10 with an orbital circularization time of
less than 10^6 years. The large mass function of the orbit significantly
restricts the mass of the M giant. Adopting a neutron-star mass of 1.35M(Sun),
the maximum mass of the M giant is 1.22M(Sun), making it the less massive star.
Derived abundances indicate a slightly subsolar metallicity. Carbon and
nitrogen are in the expected ratio resulting from the red-giant first dredge-up
phase. The lack of O-17 suggests that the M-giant has a mass less than
1.3M(Sun), consistent with our maximum mass. The red giant radius is 103R(Sun),
much smaller than the estimated Roche lobe radius. Thus, the mass loss of the
red giant is via a stellar wind. Although the M giant companion to the neutron
star has a mass similar to the late-type star in low-mass X-ray binaries, its
near-solar abundances and apparent runaway velocity are not fully consistent

The stellar population histories of early-type galaxies. III. The Coma Cluster
We present stellar population parameters of twelve early-type galaxies (ETGs)
in the Coma Cluster based on spectra obtained using the Low Resolution Imaging
Spectrograph on the Keck II Telescope. Our data allow us to examine in detail
the zero-point and scatter in their stellar population properties. Our ETGs
have SSP-equivalent ages of on average 5-8 Gyr with the models used here, with
the oldest galaxies having ages of ~10 Gyr old. This average age is identical
to the mean age of field ETGs. Our ETGs span a large range in velocity
dispersion but are consistent with being drawn from a population with a single
age. Specifically, ten of the twelve ETGs are consistent within their formal
errors of having the same age, 5.2+/-0.2 Gyr, over a factor of more than 750 in
mass. We therefore find no evidence for downsizing of the stellar populations
of ETGs in the core of the Coma Cluster. We suggest that Coma Cluster ETGs may
have formed the majority of their mass at high redshifts but suffered small but
detectable star formation events at z~0.1-0.3. Previous detections of
'downsizing' from stellar populations of local ETGs may not reflect the same
downsizing seen in lookback studies of RSGs, as the young ages of the local
