Lipemia Retinalis, Macular Edema, and Vision Loss in a Diabetic Patient with a History of Type IV Hypertriglyceridemia and Pancreatitis
Background: Lipemia retinalis is a rare but known complication of elevated serum triglycerides. This case describes the clinical course of a diabetic patient who presented with lipemia retinalis and macular edema, which responded to systemic and local treatments. Case Report: A 40-year-old female with a history of type II diabetes mellitus, hypertriglyceridemia, and pancreatitis presented with decreased vision in the left eye. She had peripapillary and macular edema, intraretinal hemorrhages, and prominent exudates in the setting of lipemia retinalis due to type IV hypertriglyceridemia. She was treated with serial intravitreal bevacizumab injections for macular edema and systemic lipid lowering therapy, and her visual acuity improved back to baseline. Conclusions: In the setting of lipemia retinalis and hypertriglyceridemia, the current patient developed macular edema and vision loss. The macular edema was treated with intravitreal injections of bevacizumab, and the patient experienced a rapid recovery of visual acuity

Serum Bovine Immunoglobulins Improve Inflammation and Gut Barrier Function in Persons with HIV and Enteropathy on Suppressive ART.
BackgroundSystemic inflammation persists in chronic HIV infection and is associated with increased rates of non-AIDS events such as cardiovascular and liver disease. Increased gut permeability and systemic exposure to microbial products are key drivers of this inflammation. Serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin/protein isolate (SBI) supports gut healing in other conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease.MethodsIn this randomized, double-blind study, participants receiving suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART) with chronic diarrhea received placebo or SBI at 2.5 g BID or 5 g BID for 4 weeks, followed by a 20-week placebo-free extension phase with SBI at either 2.5 or 5 g BID. Intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP), zonulin, flagellin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and LPS-binding protein, and inflammatory markers were measured by ELISA or multiplex assays. Non-parametric tests were used for analysis.ResultsOne hundred three participants completed the study. By week 24 SBI significantly decreased circulating levels of I-FABP (-0.35 ng/μL, P=0.002) and zonulin (-4.90 ng/μL, P=0.003), suggesting improvement in gut damage, and interleukin-6 (IL-6) (-0.40 pg/μL, P=0.002), reflecting improvement in systemic inflammation. In participants with the lowest quartile of CD4+ T-cell counts at baseline (189-418 cells/μL), CD4+ T-cell counts increased significantly (26 cells/μL; P=0.002).ConclusionsOral SBI may decrease inflammation and warrants further exploration as a potential strategy to improve gut integrity and decrease systemic inflammation among persons receiving prolonged suppressive ART
Towards More Precise Survey Photometry for PanSTARRS and LSST: Measuring Directly the Optical Transmission Spectrum of the Atmosphere
Motivated by the recognition that variation in the optical transmission of
the atmosphere is probably the main limitation to the precision of ground-based
CCD measurements of celestial fluxes, we review the physical processes that
attenuate the passage of light through the Earth's atmosphere. The next
generation of astronomical surveys, such as PanSTARRS and LSST, will greatly
benefit from dedicated apparatus to obtain atmospheric transmission data that
can be associated with each survey image. We review and compare various
approaches to this measurement problem, including photometry, spectroscopy, and
LIDAR. In conjunction with careful measurements of instrumental throughput,
atmospheric transmission measurements should allow next-generation imaging
surveys to produce photometry of unprecedented precision. Our primary concerns
are the real-time determination of aerosol scattering and absorption by water
along the line of sight, both of which can vary over the course of a night's

Fluorine Abundance Variations in Red Giants of the Globular Cluster M4 and Early-Cluster Chemical Pollution
We present fluorine abundances in seven red-giant members of the globular
cluster M4 (NGC 6121). These abundances were derived from the HF (1--0) R9 line
at 2.3357 microns in high-resolution infrared spectra obtained with the Phoenix
spectrograph on Gemini-South. Many abundances in the target stars have been
studied previously, so that their overall abundance distributions are
well-mapped. The abundance of fluorine is found to vary by more than a factor
of 6, with the F-19 variations being correlated with the already established
oxygen variations, and anti-correlated with the sodium and aluminium
variations. In this paper we thus add fluorine to the list of elements known to
vary in globular cluster stars, and this provides further evidence that
H-burning is the root cause of the chemical inhomegeneities. The fact that F-19
is found to decrease in the M4 stars, as the signature of H-burning appears,
indicates that the polluting stars must have masses greater than about 3.5
solar masses, as less massive stars than this should produce, not destroy,

TESS Shines Light on the Origin of the Ambiguous Nuclear Transient ASASSN-18el
We analyze high-cadence data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite
(TESS) of the ambiguous nuclear transient (ANT) ASASSN-18el. The optical
changing-look phenomenon in ASASSN-18el has been argued to be due to either a
drastic change in the accretion rate of the existing active galactic nucleus
(AGN) or the result of a tidal disruption event (TDE). Throughout the TESS
observations, short-timescale stochastic variability is seen, consistent with
an AGN. We are able to fit the TESS light curve with a damped-random-walk (DRW)
model and recover a rest-frame variability amplitude of mJy and a rest-frame timescale of days.
We find that the estimated for ASASSN-18el is broadly consistent
with an apparent relationship between the DRW timescale and central
supermassive black hole mass. The large-amplitude stochastic variability of
ASASSN-18el, particularly during late stages of the flare, suggests that the
origin of this ANT is likely due to extreme AGN activity rather than a TDE.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. Will be submitted to AAS journals. Comments

Treatment with a corticotrophin releasing factor 2 receptor agonist modulates skeletal muscle mass and force production in aged and chronically ill animals
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Muscle weakness is associated with a variety of chronic disorders such as emphysema (EMP) and congestive heart failure (CHF) as well as aging. Therapies to treat muscle weakness associated with chronic disease or aging are lacking. Corticotrophin releasing factor 2 receptor (CRF2R) agonists have been shown to maintain skeletal muscle mass and force production in a variety of acute conditions that lead to skeletal muscle wasting.</p> <p>Hypothesis</p> <p>We hypothesize that treating animals with a CRF2R agonist will maintain skeletal muscle mass and force production in animals with chronic disease and in aged animals.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We utilized animal models of aging, CHF and EMP to evaluate the potential of CRF2R agonist treatment to maintain skeletal muscle mass and force production in aged animals and animals with CHF and EMP.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In aged rats, we demonstrate that treatment with a CRF2R agonist for up to 3 months results in greater extensor digitorum longus (EDL) force production, EDL mass, soleus mass and soleus force production compared to age matched untreated animals. In the hamster EMP model, we demonstrate that treatment with a CRF2R agonist for up to 5 months results in greater EDL force production in EMP hamsters when compared to vehicle treated EMP hamsters and greater EDL mass and force in normal hamsters when compared to vehicle treated normal hamsters. In the rat CHF model, we demonstrate that treatment with a CRF2R agonist for up to 3 months results in greater EDL and soleus muscle mass and force production in CHF rats and normal rats when compared to the corresponding vehicle treated animals.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These data demonstrate that the underlying physiological conditions associated with chronic diseases such as CHF and emphysema in addition to aging do not reduce the potential of CRF2R agonists to maintain skeletal muscle mass and force production.</p
ASASSN-14ko is a Periodic Nuclear Transient in ESO 253-G003
We present the discovery that ASASSN-14ko is a periodically flaring AGN at
the center of the galaxy ESO 253-G003. At the time of its discovery by the
All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), it was classified as a
supernova close to the nucleus. The subsequent six years of V- and g-band
ASAS-SN observations reveal that ASASSN-14ko has nuclear flares occurring at
regular intervals. The seventeen observed outbursts show evidence of a
decreasing period over time, with a mean period of days
and a period derivative of . The most recent
outburst in May 2020, which took place as predicted, exhibited spectroscopic
changes during the rise and a had a UV bright, blackbody spectral energy
distribution similar to tidal disruption events (TDEs). The X-ray flux
decreased by a factor of 4 at the beginning of the outburst and then returned
to its quiescent flux after ~8 days. TESS observed an outburst during Sectors
4-6, revealing a rise time of days in the optical and a decline
that is best fit with an exponential model. We discuss several possible
scenarios to explain ASASSN-14ko's periodic outbursts, but currently favor a
repeated partial TDE. The next outbursts should peak in the optical on UT

Infrared High-Resolution Integrated Light Spectral Analyses of M31 Globular Clusters From Apogee
Chemical abundances are presented for 25 M31 globular clusters (GCs), based on moderately high resolution (R = 22,500) H-band integrated light (IL) spectra from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). Infrared (IR) spectra offer lines from new elements, lines of different strengths, and lines at higher excitation potentials compared to the optical. Integrated abundances of C, N, and O are derived from CO, CN, and OH molecular features, while Fe, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, and Ti abundances are derived from atomic features. These abundances are compared to previous results from the optical, demonstrating the validity and value of IR IL analyses. The CNO abundances are consistent with typical tip of the red giant branch stellar abundances but are systematically offset from optical Lick index abundances. With a few exceptions, the other abundances agree between the optical and the IR within the 1σ uncertainties. The first integrated K abundances are also presented and demonstrate that K tracks the α elements. The combination of IR and optical abundances allows better determinations of GC properties and enables probes of the multiple populations in extragalactic GCs. In particular, the integrated effects of the Na/O anticorrelation can be directly examined for the first time
ASPCAP: THE APOGEE STELLAR PARAMETER AND CHEMICAL ABUNDANCES PIPELINE
The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) has built the largest moderately high-resolution (R ≈ 22,500) spectroscopic map of the stars across the Milky Way, and including dust-obscured areas. The APOGEE Stellar Parameter and Chemical Abundances Pipeline (ASPCAP) is the software developed for the automated analysis of these spectra. ASPCAP determines atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances from observed spectra by comparing observed spectra to libraries of theoretical spectra, using χ2 minimization in a multidimensional parameter space. The package consists of a fortran90 code that does the actual minimization and a wrapper IDL code for book-keeping and data handling. This paper explains in detail the ASPCAP components and functionality, and presents results from a number of tests designed to check its performance. ASPCAP provides stellar effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities precise to 2%, 0.1 dex, and 0.05 dex, respectively, for most APOGEE stars, which are predominantly giants. It also provides abundances for up to 15 chemical elements with various levels of precision, typically under 0.1 dex. The final data release (DR12) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III contains an APOGEE database of more than 150,000 stars. ASPCAP development continues in the SDSS-IV APOGEE-2 survey
