Fiction: Alice. Exegesis: The Mother-Daughter Relationship in Lives of Girls and Women. This thesis consists of a creative fiction component, Alice, and an exegesis that is a literary analysis of the mother-daughter relationship in Alice Munro’s Lives of Girls and Women. Alice is a collection of nine short stories that looks at both the mother and daughter’s perspective of their relationship. The location is Crookwell, a small country town in New South Wales, set in the period following World War II until the 1970s. The exegesis examines the representation of conflictual patterns in the mother-daughter relationship – in Lives of Girls and Women – at a time and within a society that is on the cusp of change. It also examines the unconscious influence of the Second Wave feminist movement on Munro’s thinking. Like many regions of rural Australia, there appears to be no fiction set specifically in the Crookwell district. In a fashion similar to Munro, in Alice I seek to illuminate a bygone period and lifestyle. The short story cycle allows me to depict glimpses of ordinary everyday life and to capture attitudes within the community that influence the mother-daughter relationship of the central characters. Of special significance is the effect of organised religion and its influence on motherhood. Munro describes a community that enforces the ‘institute of motherhood,’ as described by Adrienne Rich (1995), the structured concepts demanded of men and women in the 1940s and 1950s, and the subsequent tensions that emerge between mother and daughter as an apparent consequence of these social expectations. The exegesis examines why Munro’s presentation of the mother-daughter relationship in Lives of Girls and Women is still relevant, and argues that, regardless of the social, cultural and contextual forces that moderate this relationship, there remains an ongoing primal tension between mother and daughter as the daughter seeks to differentiate herself and the mother struggles to be heard. By setting Alice in the Australian rural community of Crookwell, between the 1950s and 1970s, I seek to similarly explore the particular attitudes and tensions that arise for mothers and daughters away from the major cities. It is a theme that has been largely neglected in Australian literature to date

Aquatic agricultural systems (AAS) are places where farming and fishing in freshwater and/orscoastal ecosystems contribute significantly to household income and food security. Globally, theslivelihoods of many poor and vulnerable people are dependent on these systems. In recognitionsof the importance of AAS, the CGIAR Research Program (CRP) is undertaking a new generationsof global agricultural research programs on key issues affecting global food security and ruralsdevelopment. The overall goal of the research program is to improve the well-being of peoplesdependent on these systems. Solomon Islands is one of five priority countries in the AAS program, sled by WorldFish. In Solomon Islands, the AAS program operates in the Malaita Hub (MalaitasProvince) and the Western Hub (Western Province). This program and its scoping activities aressummarized in this report

Efficacy of Intraoperative Dexmedetomidine Compared with Placebo for Postoperative Pain Management: A Meta-Analysis of Published Studies

INTRODUCTION: Dexmedetomidine (Dex) has sedative, analgesic, and anesthetic-sparing effects. This meta-analysis examines demonstrated intraoperative and postoperative effects of intraoperative Dex administration during pediatric surgery. METHODS: A search for randomized placebo-controlled trials was conducted to identify clinical trials examining intraoperative Dex use in children, infants, and neonates. Primary outcome was postoperative opioid consumption; secondary outcomes were: postoperative pain intensity and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). RESULTS: Fourteen randomized controlled trials performed during painful procedures were analyzed. Intraoperative Dex administration was associated with significantly reduced postoperative opioid consumption in the postanesthesia care unit [PACU; risk ratio (RR) = 0.31 (0.17, 0.59), I (2) = 76%, p < 0.0001 and cumulative z score using trial sequential analysis], decreased pain intensity in PACU [standardized mean difference (SMD) = -1.18 (-1.88, -0.48), I (2) = 91%, p < 0.0001] but had no effect upon PONV incidence [RR = 0.67 (0.41, 1.08), I (2) = 0%, p = 0.48]. Subgroup analyses found administering Dex during adenotonsillectomy and using a bolus <0.5 µg/kg (irrespective to the use of a continuous administration) without effects on studies outcomes. Heterogeneity was high among results and a high suspicion of publication bias was present for all analyzed outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis shows that intraoperative Dex administration in children reduces postoperative opioids consumption and postoperative pain in PACU. According to our results, optimal bolus dose was found to be ≥0.5 µg/kg. Future studies have to explore this particular point and the postoperative analgesic effects of Dex during longer periods

Methodological Framework for Analysing Cascading Effects from Flood Events: The Case of Sukhumvit Area, Bangkok, Thailand

This is the final version of the article. Available from MDPI via the DOI in this record.Impacts from floods in urban areas can be diverse and wide ranging. These can include the loss of human life, infrastructure and property damages, as well as other kinds of nuisance and inconvenience to urban life. Hence, the ability to identify and quantify wider ranging effects from floods is of the utmost importance to urban flood managers and infrastructure operators. The present work provides a contribution in this direction and describes a methodological framework for analysing cascading effects from floods that has been applied for the Sukhumvit area in Bangkok (Thailand). It demonstrates that the effects from floods can be much broader in their reach and magnitude than the sole impacts incurred from direct and immediate losses. In Sukhumvit, these include loss of critical services, assets and goods, traffic congestion and delays in transportation, loss of business and income, disturbances and discomfort to the residents, and all these can be traced with the careful analysis of cascading effects. The present work explored the use of different visualization options to present the findings. These include a casual loop diagram, a HAZUR resilience map, a tree diagram and GIS maps. The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007–2013) under Grant Agreement No. 603663 for the research project PEARL (Preparing for Extreme and Rare events in coastaL regions). The authors are grateful to Opticits for providing the HAZUR software licence, within the collaboration of the EU H2020 research project RESCCUE (RESilience to cope with Climate Change in Urban arEas—a multisectorial approach focusing on water) Grant Agreement 700174
