Angular Correlations in Top Quark Pair Production and Decay at Hadron Colliders
We show how to observe sizable angular correlations between the decay
products of the top quark and those of the anti-top quark in top quark pair
production and decay at hadron colliders. These correlations result from the
large asymmetry in the rate for producing like-spin versus unlike-spin top
quark pairs provided the appropriate spin axes are used. The effects of new
physics at production or decay on these correlations are briefly discussed.Comment: 34 pages, revtex, including 12 uuencoded postscript figure
Anomalous Scaling of Structure Functions and Dynamic Constraints on Turbulence Simulations
The connection between anomalous scaling of structure functions
(intermittency) and numerical methods for turbulence simulations is discussed.
It is argued that the computational work for direct numerical simulations (DNS)
of fully developed turbulence increases as , and not as
expected from Kolmogorov's theory, where is a large-scale Reynolds number.
Various relations for the moments of acceleration and velocity derivatives are
derived. An infinite set of exact constraints on dynamically consistent subgrid
models for Large Eddy Simulations (LES) is derived from the Navier-Stokes
equations, and some problems of principle associated with existing LES models
are highlighted.Comment: 18 page
The first multi-wavelength campaign of AXP 4U 0142+61 from radio to hard X-rays
For the first time a quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength campaign has been
performed on an Anomalous X-ray Pulsar from the radio to the hard X-ray band.
4U 0142+61 was an INTEGRAL target for 1 Ms in July 2005. During these
observations it was also observed in the X-ray band with Swift and RXTE, in the
optical and NIR with Gemini North and in the radio with the WSRT. In this paper
we present the source-energy distribution. The spectral results obtained in the
individual wave bands do not connect smoothly; apparently components of
different origin contribute to the total spectrum. Remarkable is that the
INTEGRAL hard X-ray spectrum (power-law index 0.79 +/- 0.10) is now measured up
to an energy of ~230 keV with no indication of a spectral break. Extrapolation
of the INTEGRAL power-law spectrum to lower energies passes orders of magnitude
underneath the NIR and optical fluxes, as well as the low ~30 microJy (2 sigma)
upper limit in the radio band.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure. To be published in the proceedings of the

Periodic and Quasiperiodic Motion of an Elongated Microswimmer in Poiseuille Flow
We study the dynamics of a prolate spheroidal microswimmer in Poiseuille flow
for different flow geometries. When moving between two parallel plates or in a
cylindrical microchannel, the swimmer performs either periodic swinging or
periodic tumbling motion. Although the trajectories of spherical and elongated
swimmers are qualitatively similar, the swinging and tumbling frequency
strongly depends on the aspect ratio of the swimmer. In channels with reduced
symmetry the swimmers perform quasiperiodic motion which we demonstrate
explicitely for swimming in a channel with elliptical cross section
Measurements of the Production, Decay and Properties of the Top Quark: A Review
With the full Tevatron Run II and early LHC data samples, the opportunity for
furthering our understanding of the properties of the top quark has never been
more promising. Although the current knowledge of the top quark comes largely
from Tevatron measurements, the experiments at the LHC are poised to probe
top-quark production and decay in unprecedented regimes. Although no current
top quark measurements conclusively contradict predictions from the standard
model, the precision of most measurements remains statistically limited.
Additionally, some measurements, most notably the forward-backward asymmetry in
top quark pair production, show tantalizing hints of beyond-the-Standard-Model
dynamics. The top quark sample is growing rapidly at the LHC, with initial
results now public. This review examines the current status of top quark
measurements in the particular light of searching for evidence of new physics,
either through direct searches for beyond the standard model phenomena or
indirectly via precise measurements of standard model top quark properties

in NonCommutative Standard Model
We study the top quark decay to b quark and W boson in the NonCommutative
Standard Model (NCSM). The lowest contribution to the decay comes from the
terms quadratic in the matrix describing the noncommutative (NC) effects while
the linear term is seen to identically vanish because of symmetry. The NC
effects are found to be significant only for low values of the NC
characteristic scale.Comment: 11 page Latex file containing 2 eps figures (redrawn). More

Astronomers for planet Earth: embracing virtual communication induced by the COVID-19 pandemic to help tackle the climate crisis
Astronomers for Planet Earth (A4E) is a global collective, whose main goal is to communicate the fragility of our planet from an astronomical perspective. A4E works hard to equally engage with astronomers and educators worldwide, by encouraging the communities to reduce emissions and providing a space to collaborate and share resources. These actions have led to increased sustainability and the incorporation of climate change lessons and activities into teaching and outreach. With the global shift to online communication due to Covid-19, Astronomers for Planet Earth has utilised digital tools in the form of online conferences and seminars, high-impact journal articles, webinars, social media, and video production to engage its audience and grow a membership of around 1300 astronomers in 70 countries around the world. Our article addresses the importance of communicating the climate crisis from an astronomical perspective and explores the successes and challenges of our group's virtual communication with the astronomy community and the general public thus far.Science Communication and Societ
Experimental Study of the Shortest Reset Word of Random Automata
In this paper we describe an approach to finding the shortest reset word of a
finite synchronizing automaton by using a SAT solver. We use this approach to
perform an experimental study of the length of the shortest reset word of a
finite synchronizing automaton. The largest automata we considered had 100
states. The results of the experiments allow us to formulate a hypothesis that
the length of the shortest reset word of a random finite automaton with
states and 2 input letters with high probability is sublinear with respect to
and can be estimated as $1.95 n^{0.55}.
A pain science education and walking program to increase physical activity in people with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis: A feasibility study
Introduction: Nine of 10 people with knee osteoarthritis are inactive. Unhelpful pain beliefs may negatively influence physical activity levels. Targeting these unhelpful pain beliefs, through contemporary pain science education (PSE), may provide benefit. Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility of conducting a clinical trial to determine the effect of adding PSE (vs adding sham ultrasound) to an individualised, physiotherapist-led education and walking program in people with painful knee osteoarthritis. Methods: Twenty participants were randomised (1:1) into the PSE group or Control group, each receiving 4 in-person weekly treatments, then 4 weeks of at-home activities (weekly telephone check-in). Clinical outcomes and physical activity (7 days of wristworn accelerometry) were assessed at baseline, 4 (clinical outcomes only), 8, and 26 weeks. A priori feasibility criteria for recruitment, intervention adherence, viability of wrist-based accelerometry, and follow-up retention were set. Perceived intervention credibility, acceptability, and usefulness from participants and clinicians were assessed (ratings, written/verbal feedback). Results: Most feasibility criteria were met. On average, 7 adults/wk were eligible, with 70% recruited. Treatment compliance was high (in-person: 80% PSE; 100% Control; at-home: 78% PSE; 75% Control). Wrist-based accelerometry had .75% valid weartime. Sufficient follow-up rates were not achieved (26 weeks: 65%). Participant and clinician feedback highlighted that PSE was too complex and did not match patient expectations of “physiotherapy”, that sham ultrasound was problematic (clinician), but that both treatments had high credibility, acceptability, and usefulness. Conclusions: Progression to a full trial is warranted. Strategies to increase participant retention, refine the PSE content/delivery, and replace/remove the sham intervention are required.Tasha R.
