    Get PDF
This thesis examines existing research and theory on metaphors, organizational culture and organizational change. It focuses on the application of the “Fish Philosophy” metaphor in a changing culture of an organization to determine how, when and why this metaphor is used. The analysis of discourse observed in meeting, office cubes, cafeteria as well as the content analysis of documents (newsletters, email messages, photographs, videotapes) were among the methods used to conduct this study. Metaphors and metaphoric discourse play an important pole in developing and maintaining shared meanings among organizational members while shaping and reshaping an organization’s culture and communication process. The study contributes to existing theory and research in organizational communication and organizational change by analyzing the functions of metaphors and metaphorical discourse and how they are used in organizations

Doxorubicin (DOX), an effective chemotherapeutic drug used in the treatment of various cancers, is limited in its clinical applications due to cardiotoxicity. Recent studies suggest that transplanted adult stem cells inhibit DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. However, the effects of transplanted embryonic stem (ES) and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells are completely unknown in DOX-induced left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction (MI). In brief, C57BL/6 mice were divided into five groups: Sham, DOX-MI, DOX-MI+ cell culture (CC) media, DOX-MI+ ES cells, and DOX-MI+ iPS cells. Mice were injected with cumulative dose of 12 mg/kg of DOX and 2 weeks later, MI was induced by coronary artery ligation. Following ligation, 5x10(4) ES or iPS cells were delivered into the peri-infarct region. At day 14 post-MI, echocardiography was performed, mice were sacrificed, and hearts were harvested for further analyses. Our data reveal apoptosis was significantly inhibited in ES and iPS cell transplanted hearts compared with respective controls (DOX-MI+ES: 0.48 +/- 0.06% and DOX-MI+iPS: 0.33 +/- 0.05% vs. DOX-MI: 1.04 +/- 0.07% and DOX-MI+CC: 0.96 +/- 0.21%; p \u3c 0.05). Furthermore, a significant increase in levels of Notch-1 (p \u3c 0.05), Hes1 (p \u3c 0.05), and pAkt (p \u3c 0.05) were observed whereas a decrease in the levels of PTEN (p \u3c 0.05), a negative regulator of Akt, was evident following stem cell transplantation. Moreover, hearts transplanted with stem cells demonstrated decreased vascular and interstitial fibrosis (p \u3c 0.05) as well as MMP-9 expression (p \u3c 0.01) compared with controls. Additionally, heart function was significantly improved (p \u3c 0.05) in both cell-transplanted groups. In conclusion, our data show that transplantation of ES and iPS cells blunt DOX-induced adverse cardiac remodeling, which is associated with improved cardiac function, and these effects are mediated by the Notch pathway

Less Is More: How Grantmakers Are Using Simple Financial Metrics

    Get PDF
This article explores how the Financial Health Analysis Tool can bridge the gap between the capacity of grantmakers to conduct financial analysis and the need to incorporate financial considerations into both grantmaking and ongoing engagement with grantees. The tool presents four years of key financial indicators in graphs and charts that create a kind of dashboard of a nonprofit\u27s financial health over time. This small set of simple metrics highlights patterns and trends that can help grantmakers and nonprofits see how the financial management of an organization is advancing its mission and strategy. Using a series of interviews with a group of early users of the tool, this article looks at how these metrics are deployed in practice by grantmakers and illustrates three areas where they can be of particular utility: due diligence and evaluating grants; capacity building; and recognizing larger patterns and opportunities

Circulation and drug abuse in Indonesia is a multidimensional and multisectoral problem, all lines of life can be exposed to the dangers of drugs. Not apart from that students or young people are the main target of drug abuse, given the level of emotions that have not been stable so easily affected to abuse drugs. Based on Act No 35 of 2009, the Government established the National Narcotics Agency to tackle the drug problem that became a problem in Indonesia, BNN was given the authority of investigation and investigation of narcotics crime and narcotics precursor. In the effort to prevent abuse and illicit drug trafficking as well as handling of government drug problem to include all components of society both from campus environment and work environment. Based on the Regulatory Chief of BNN No 16 of 2014, a Community Participation Container was established to implement the policy towards the participation of the Higher Education Environment. Technical analysis to obtain data through interview with informant, observation, and supporting document. This research uses Merilee S. Grindle theory which argues that the driving factors of implementation have three main factors, namely policy content and policy environment, then the implementation result can be seen from the impact and change on society. The results of this study indicate that the Implementation of the Policy of the Role of the Environment of Higher Education with Anti-Drugs is quite successful in reducing the number of abuse in Semarang City, but still less than optimal with the decrease of performance, and the level of service provided, resulting in the decreasing interest of the Students to join the Unit Anti-drug duties. The desired changes to the creation of an Anti-Narcotics Based Higher Education Environment. The recommendations are to improve the performance and quality of training and counseling, innovation in order to provide facilities and infrastructure that are in line with community expectations

Cultivating and Reporting of Campus Threats

The consumption of media has been established as one of the elements responsible for changing the general population’s perceptions. Specifically, cultivation theory (depending on the amount of media use) points to an enhanced representation of a characterization conveyed through the media. This depiction has the potential to create an inaccurate portrayal (stereotype) leading to an increased level of anxiety. The proliferation of reported incidents (real or perceived) associated with mass shootings in the U.S. over the last 20 years is an example. This paper traces the relatively recent coverage of mass shootings in the U.S. by the media and the side effects on the school environment. Included are factors that contribute to an increase of reports concerning violence and shootings. Followed by a discussion of components that may be responsible for this escalation and an examination of the procedures that could be put into place to handle this increase

Transition to complete synchronization in phase coupled oscillators with nearest neighbours coupling

We investigate synchronization in a Kuramoto-like model with nearest neighbour coupling. Upon analyzing the behaviour of individual oscillators at the onset of complete synchronization, we show that the time interval between bursts in the time dependence of the frequencies of the oscillators exhibits universal scaling and blows up at the critical coupling strength. We also bring out a key mechanism that leads to phase locking. Finally, we deduce forms for the phases and frequencies at the onset of complete synchronization.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in CHAO
