    SCATS: SRB Cost Accounting and Tracking System handbook

    The Solid Rocket Booster Cost Accounting and Tracking System (SCATS) which is an automatic data processing system designed to keep a running account of the number, description, and estimated cost of Level 2, 3, and 4 changes is described. Although designed specifically for the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster Program, the ADP system can be used for any other program that has a similar structure for recording, reporting, and summing numbers and costs of changes. The program stores the alpha-numeric designators for changes, government estimated costs, proposed costs, and negotiated value in a MIRADS (Marshall Information Retrieval and Display System) format which permits rapid access, manipulation, and reporting of current change status. Output reports listing all changes, totals of each level, and totals of all levels, can be derived for any calendar interval period

    Proximal phalanx shaft fracture with entrapment in the transverse retinacular ligament: a case report

    We report the interesting case of a 33 years old male who underwent operative intervention for a left oblique proximal phalanx shaft fracture of the third finger which penetrated the transverse retinacular ligament (TRL). This patient required operative intervention due to entrapment of the bony fragment in the TRL which acted as a noose with traction on the fractured segment. The fracture was irreducible through a closed maneuver. The use of a dorsal approach allowed visualization of the fracture site and implementation of screws for fixation was deemed adequate secondary to the patient’s bone quality. He was placed in a volar splint at the conclusion of the case to allow for immobilization and protection of the repair. At follow-up, the patient’s radiographic images appeared appropriate and was progressing as expected. We report lessons learned from this case and describe a previously unreported fracture pattern and a possible method of reduction and fixation through a surgical approach in this report

    Salter-Harris type II fracture of the middle phalanx with concomitant central slip injury in an 11 year old: a case report

    An 11-year-old male sustained an irreducible, completely displaced epiphyseal fracture of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) of the middle finger with an associated central slip injury. Central slip injuries occurring in conjunction with Salter-Harris type II middle phalanx fracture are rare entities, with no previously documented case. Our patient underwent open reduction, internal fixation through crossed-pins to achieve reduction and fixation. He was then splinted in extension for six weeks to allow healing of the central slip injury. At 1-year follow-up, the patient had full range-of-motion with no clinical indication of physeal disruption or growth arrest of the repaired digit. We demonstrate a case in which ephiphyseal fractures of the proximal interphalangeal joint with a concomitant central slip injury can safely be treated with open reduction internal fixation combined with a period of immobilization. We characterize a surgical method of reduction and fixation with splinted immobilization and describe lessons learned from this previously unreported case

    Relinquishing Control: What Romanian De Se Attitude Reports Teach Us About Immunity To Error Through Misidentification

    Higginbotham argued that certain linguistic items of English, when used in indirect discourse, necessarily trigger first-personal interpretations. They are: the emphatic reflexive pronoun and the controlled understood subject, represented as PRO. PRO is special, in this respect, due to its imposing obligatory control effects between the main clause and its subordinates ). Folescu & Higginbotham, in addition, argued that in Romanian, a language whose grammar doesn’t assign a prominent role to PRO, de se triggers are correlated with the subjunctive mood of certain verbs. That paper, however, didn’t account for the grammatical diversity of the reports that display immunity to error through misidentification in Romanian: some of these reports are expressed by using de se triggers; others are not. Their IEM, moreover, is not systematically lexically controlled by the verbs, via their theta-roles; it is, rather, determined by the meaning of the verbs in question. Given the data from Romanian, I will argue, the phenomenon of IEM cannot be fully explained starting either from the syntactical or the lexical structure of a language

    Parity lifetime of bound states in a proximitized semiconductor nanowire

    Quasiparticle excitations can compromise the performance of superconducting devices, causing high frequency dissipation, decoherence in Josephson qubits, and braiding errors in proposed Majorana-based topological quantum computers. Quasiparticle dynamics have been studied in detail in metallic superconductors but remain relatively unexplored in semiconductor-superconductor structures, which are now being intensely pursued in the context of topological superconductivity. To this end, we introduce a new physical system comprised of a gate-confined semiconductor nanowire with an epitaxially grown superconductor layer, yielding an isolated, proximitized nanowire segment. We identify Andreev-like bound states in the semiconductor via bias spectroscopy, determine the characteristic temperatures and magnetic fields for quasiparticle excitations, and extract a parity lifetime (poisoning time) of the bound state in the semiconductor exceeding 10 ms.Comment: text and supplementary information combine

    A Debris/Ice/TPS assessment and photographic analysis was conducted for Space Shuttle Mission STS-28R. Debris inspections of the flight elements and launch pad are performed before and after launch. Ice/Frost conditions on the External Tank are assessed by the use of computer programs, nomographs, and infrared scanner data during cryogenic loading of the nomographs, and infrared scanner data during cryogenic loading of the vehicle followed by on-pad visual inspection. High speed photography is analyzed after launch to identify ice/debris sources and evaluate potential vehicle damage and/or in-flight anomalies. The debris/ice/TPS conditions and photographic analysis of Mission STS-28R is documented along with their overall effect on the Space Shuttle Program
