Novel conformation-specific monoclonal antibodies against amyloidogenic forms of transthyretin
Thick domain walls around a black hole
We discuss the gravitationally interacting system of a thick domain wall and
a black hole. We numerically solve the scalar field equation in the
Schwarzschild spacetime and obtain a sequence of static axi-symmetric solutions
representing thick domain walls. We find that, for the walls near the horizon,

Enhanced mitochondrial superoxide scavenging does not Improve muscle insulin action in the high fat-fed mouse
Improving mitochondrial oxidant scavenging may be a viable strategy for the treatment of insulin resistance and diabetes. Mice overexpressing the mitochondrial matrix isoform of superoxide dismutase (sod2(tg) mice) and/or transgenically expressing catalase within the mitochondrial matrix (mcat(tg) mice) have increased scavenging of O2(˙-) and H2O2, respectively. Furthermore, muscle insulin action is partially preserved in high fat (HF)-fed mcat(tg) mice. The goal of the current study was to test the hypothesis that increased O2(˙-) scavenging alone or in combination with increased H2O2 scavenging (mtAO mice) enhances in vivo muscle insulin action in the HF-fed mouse. Insulin action was examined in conscious, unrestrained and unstressed wild type (WT), sod2(tg), mcat(tg) and mtAO mice using hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps (insulin clamps) combined with radioactive glucose tracers following sixteen weeks of normal chow or HF (60% calories from fat) feeding. Glucose infusion rates, whole body glucose disappearance, and muscle glucose uptake during the insulin clamp were similar in chow- and HF-fed WT and sod2(tg) mice. Consistent with our previous work, HF-fed mcat(tg) mice had improved muscle insulin action, however, an additive effect was not seen in mtAO mice. Insulin-stimulated Akt phosphorylation in muscle from clamped mice was consistent with glucose flux measurements. These results demonstrate that increased O2(˙-) scavenging does not improve muscle insulin action in the HF-fed mouse alone or when coupled to increased H2O2 scavenging
Goldstones in Diphotons
We study the conditions for a new scalar resonance to be observed first in
diphotons at the LHC Run-2. We focus on scenarios where the scalar arises
either from an internal or spacetime symmetry broken spontaneously, for which
the mass is naturally below the cutoff and the low-energy interactions are
fixed by the couplings to the broken currents, UV anomalies, and selection
rules. We discuss the recent excess in diphoton resonance searches observed by
ATLAS and CMS at 750 GeV, and explore its compatibility with other searches at
Run-1 and its interpretation as Goldstone bosons in supersymmetry and composite
Higgs models. We show that two candidates naturally emerge: a Goldstone boson
from an internal symmetry with electromagnetic anomalies, and the scalar
partner of the Goldstone of supersymmetry breaking: the sgoldstino. The dilaton
from conformal symmetry breaking is instead disfavoured by present data, in its

Monte-Carlo based performance assessment of ASACUSA's antihydrogen detector
An antihydrogen detector consisting of a thin BGO disk and a surrounding
plastic scintillator hodoscope has been developed. We have characterized the
two-dimensional positions sensitivity of the thin BGO disk and energy
deposition into the BGO was calibrated using cosmic rays by comparing
experimental data with Monte-Carlo simulations. The particle tracks were
defined by connecting BGO hit positions and hits on the surrounding hodoscope
scintillator bars. The event rate was investigated as a function of the angles
between the tracks and the energy deposition in the BGO for simulated
antiproton events, and for measured and simulated cosmic ray events.
Identification of the antihydrogen Monte Carlo events was performed using the
energy deposited in the BGO and the particle tracks. The cosmic ray background
was limited to 12 mHz with a detection efficiency of 81 %. The signal-to-noise
ratio was improved from 0.22 s^{-1/2} obtained with the detector in 2012 to
0.26 s^{-1/2} in this work
Yukawa couplings and masses of non-chiral states for the Standard Model on D6-branes on T6/Z6'
The perturbative leading order open string three-point couplings for the
Standard Model with hidden USp(6) on fractional D6-branes on T6/Z6' from
arXiv:0806.3039 [hep-th], arXiv:0910.0843 [hep-th] are computed. Physical
Yukawa couplings consisting of holomorphic Wilsonian superpotential terms times
a non-holomorphic prefactor involving the corresponding classical open string
Kaehler metrics are given, and mass terms for all non-chiral matter states are
derived. The lepton Yukawa interactions are at leading order flavour diagonal,
while the quark sector displays a more intricate pattern of mixings. While N=2
supersymmetric sectors acquire masses via only two D6-brane displacements -
which also provide the hierarchies between up- and down-type Yukawas within one
quark or lepton generation -, the remaining vector-like states receive masses
via perturbative three-point couplings to some Standard Model singlet fields
with vevs along flat directions. Couplings to the hidden sector and messengers

Inflation in Realistic D-Brane Models
We find successful models of D-brane/anti-brane inflation within a string
context. We work within the GKP-KKLT class of type IIB string vacua for which
many moduli are stabilized through fluxes, as recently modified to include
`realistic' orbifold sectors containing standard-model type particles. We allow
all moduli to roll when searching for inflationary solutions and find that
inflation is not generic inasmuch as special choices must be made for the
parameters describing the vacuum. But given these choices inflation can occur
for a reasonably wide range of initial conditions for the brane and antibrane.
We find that D-terms associated with the orbifold blowing-up modes play an
important role in the inflationary dynamics. Since the models contain a
standard-model-like sector after inflation, they open up the possibility of
addressing reheating issues. We calculate predictions for the CMB temperature
fluctuations and find that these can be consistent with observations, but are
generically not deep within the scale-invariant regime and so can allow
appreciable values for as well as predicting a potentially
observable gravity-wave signal. It is also possible to generate some admixture

Explicit de Sitter Flux Vacua for Global String Models with Chiral Matter
We address the open question of performing an explicit stabilisation of all
closed string moduli (including dilaton, complex structure and Kaehler moduli)
in fluxed type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications with chiral matter. Using toric
geometry we construct Calabi-Yau manifolds with del Pezzo singularities.
D-branes located at such singularities can support the Standard Model gauge
group and matter content. In order to control complex structure moduli
stabilisation we consider Calabi-Yau manifolds which exhibit a discrete
symmetry that reduces the effective number of complex structure moduli. We
calculate the corresponding periods in the symplectic basis of invariant
three-cycles and find explicit flux vacua for concrete examples. We compute the
values of the flux superpotential and the string coupling at these vacua.
Starting from these explicit complex structure solutions, we obtain AdS and dS
minima where the Kaehler moduli are stabilised by a mixture of D-terms,
non-perturbative and perturbative alpha'-corrections as in the LARGE Volume
Scenario. In the considered example the visible sector lives at a dP_6
singularity which can be higgsed to the phenomenologically interesting class of
