    An evaluation of the method for determining the Whitham F-function using distributions of downwash and sidewash angles

    The method of computing the Whitham F function using distributions of downwash and sidewash angles was evaluated with two different models. F functions which were calculated for a half angle cone cylinder at M infinites = 2.01, using theoretically and experimentally derived flow angles, show that the method is sensitive to small inaccuracies in the measured flow angles. An oblique wing transport model was tested at 0 deg angle of attack at M infinitely = 2.01. In this test, two different probes were used at two different distances from the model. The pressure signature derived from the F function was extrapolated and compared to the pressure signature measured at the distance of 0.87 body lengths with the static pressure probe. The agreement between the two pressure signatures was poor due to the many inaccuracies involved in using a probe designed to measure flow angularity

    Imaging with two-axis micromirrors

    We demonstrate a means of creating a digital image by using a two axis tilt micromirror to scan a scene. For each different orientation we extract a single grayscale value from the mirror and combine them to form a single composite image. This allows one to choose the distribution of the samples, and so in principle a variable resolution image could be created.     Streams in western North America provide spawning and rearing habitats for several species of salmon and trout that are of substantial economic importance in the region. Timber that grows on lands through which these streams flow is also economically important, and its harvest can substantially change habitat conditions and aquatic production in salmonid streams. Undisturbed forests, the streams that flow through them, and the salmonid communities in these streams have intrinsic scientific, genetic, and cultural values in addition to their economic importance. The complex relations between salmonids and their physical environment, and the changes in these relations brought about by timber harvest, have been investigated extensively (see the bibliography by Macdonald et al. 1988). However, in spite of considerable evidence of profound changes in channel morphology and in light, temperature, and flow regimes associated with timber harvests, much uncertainty exists about the responses of salmonids to these changes

    A comparison of theoretical and experimental pressure distributions for two advanced fighter wings

    A comparison was made between experimental pressure distributions measured during testing of the Vought A-7 fighter and the theoretical predictions of four transonic potential flow codes. Isolated wind and three wing-body codes were used for comparison. All comparisons are for transonic Mach numbers and include both attached and separate flows. In general, the wing-body codes gave better agreement with the experiment than did the isolated wing code but, because of the greater complexity of the geometry, were found to be considerably more expensive and less reliable

    The ability of the method to compute wing transonic performance was determined by comparing computed results with both experimental data and results computed by other theoretical procedures. Both pressure distributions and aerodynamic forces were evaluated. Comparisons indicated that the method is a significant improvement in transonic wing analysis capability. In particular, the computational method generally calculated the correct development of three-dimensional pressure distributions from subcritical to transonic conditions. Complicated, multiple shocked flows observed experimentally were reproduced computationally. The ability to identify the effects of design modifications was demonstrated both in terms of pressure distributions and shock drag characteristics

    This paper reviews research that has taken place on physical oceanography and sedimentology on New Zealand's estuaries and the inner shelf since c. 1967. It includes estuarine sedimentation, tidal inlets, beach morphodynamics, nearshore and inner shelf sedimentation, tides and coastal currents, numerical modelling, short-period waves, tsunamis, and storm surges. An extensive reference list covering both published and unpublished material is included. Formal teaching and research programmes dealing with coastal landforms and the processes that shape them were only introduced to New Zealand universities in 1964; the history of the New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research parallels and chronicles the development of physical coastal science in New Zealand, most of which has been accomplished in last 25 years

    We introduce the Keck Osiris Nearby AGN survey (KONA), a new adaptive optics-assisted integral-field spectroscopic survey of Seyfert galaxies. KONA permits at ~0.1" resolution a detailed study of the nuclear kinematic structure of gas and stars in a representative sample of 40 local bona fide active galactic nucleus (AGN). KONA seeks to characterize the physical processes responsible for the coevolution of supermassive black holes and galaxies, principally inflows and outflows. With these IFU data of the nuclear regions of 40 Seyfert galaxies, the KONA survey will be able to study, for the first time, a number of key topics with meaningful statistics. In this paper we study the nuclear K-band properties of nearby AGN. We find that the luminosities of the unresolved Seyfert 1 sources at 2.1 microns are correlated with the hard X-ray luminosities, implying that the majority of the emission is non-stellar. The best-fit correlation is logLK = 0.9logL2-10 keV + 4 over 3 orders of magnitude in both K-band and X-ray luminosities. We find no strong correlation between 2.1 microns luminosity and hard X-ray luminosity for the Seyfert 2 galaxies. The spatial extent and spectral slope of the Seyfert 2 galaxies indicate the presence of nuclear star formation and attenuating material (gas and dust), which in some cases is compact and in some galaxies extended. We detect coronal-line emission in 36 galaxies and for the first time in five galaxies. Finally, we find 4/20 galaxies that are optically classified as Seyfert 2 show broad emission lines in the near-IR, and one galaxy (NGC 7465) shows evidence of a double nucleus.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 19 pages with 18 figure

    Effects of forward contour modification on the aerodynamic characteristics of the NACA 641-212 airfoil section

    Two different forward contour modifications designed to increase the maximum lift coefficient of the NACA 64 sub 1-212 airfoil section were evaluated experimentally at low speeds. One modification consisted of a slight droop of the leading edge with an increased leading-edge radius; the other modification incorporated increased thickness over the forward 35 percent of the upper surface of the profile. Both modified airfoil sections were found to provide substantially higher maximum lift coefficients than the 64 sub 1-212 section. The drooped leading-edge modification incurred a drag penalty of approximately 10 percent at low and moderate lift coefficients and exhibited a greater nosedown pitching moment than the 64 sub 1-212 profile. The upper surface modification produced about the same drag level as the 64 sub 1-212 section at low and moderate lift coefficients and less nosedown pitching moment than the 64 sub 1-212 profile. Both modified airfoil sections had lower drag coefficients than the 64 sub 1-212 section at high lift coefficients
