An evaluation of three two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics codes including low Reynolds numbers and transonic Mach numbers
Full-potential, Euler, and Navier-Stokes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes were evaluated for use in analyzing the flow field about airfoils sections operating at Mach numbers from 0.20 to 0.60 and Reynolds numbers from 500,000 to 2,000,000. The potential code (LBAUER) includes weakly coupled integral boundary layer equations for laminar and turbulent flow with simple transition and separation models. The Navier-Stokes code (ARC2D) uses the thin-layer formulation of the Reynolds-averaged equations with an algebraic turbulence model. The Euler code (ISES) includes strongly coupled integral boundary layer equations and advanced transition and separation calculations with the capability to model laminar separation bubbles and limited zones of turbulent separation. The best experiment/CFD correlation was obtained with the Euler code because its boundary layer equations model the physics of the flow better than the other two codes. An unusual reversal of boundary layer separation with increasing angle of attack, following initial shock formation on the upper surface of the airfoil, was found in the experiment data. This phenomenon was not predicted by the CFD codes evaluated
An assessment of airfoil design by numerical optimization
A practical procedure for optimum design of aerodynamic shapes is demonstrated. The proposed procedure uses an optimization program based on the method of feasible directions coupled with an analysis program that uses a relaxation solution of the inviscid, transonic, small-disturbance equations. Results are presented for low-drag, nonlifting transonic airfoils. Extension of the method to lifting airfoils, other speed regimes, and to three dimensions if feasible
A 43-Gbps Lithium Niobate Modulator Driver Module
This paper describes the realization of a 43-Gbps Lithium Niobate modulator driver module. The NRZ driver module utilizes four stages of GaAs p-HEMT MMIC amplifiers integrated with an output level detector and feedback loop to provide thermal stability and external control of the output swing. The bias and loop control circuitry are contained in the housing on a PC board external to the sealed MIC section. The integrated module (50.8 x 73.4 x 9.5 mm 3) provides 6.0 Vp-p controllable single-ended output voltage while dissipating only 4 watt
Sommerfeld's image method in the calculation of van der Waals forces
We show how the image method can be used together with a recent method
developed by C. Eberlein and R. Zietal to obtain the dispersive van der Waals
interaction between an atom and a perfectly conducting surface of arbitrary
shape. We discuss in detail the case of an atom and a semi- infinite conducting
plane. In order to employ the above procedure to this problem it is necessary
to use the ingenious image method introduced by Sommerfeld more than one
century ago, which is a generalization of the standard procedure. Finally, we
briefly discuss other interesting situations that can also be treated by the
joint use of Sommerfeld's image technique and Eberlein-Zietal method.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of Conference on Quantum Field Theory

Investigating the relationship between social support and durable return to work
The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between social support and durable return to work (RTW) post occupational injury. A total of 1,179 questionnaires were posted to clients previously receiving vocational rehabilitation services from the Return to Work Assist program in Queensland, Australia. Participants were asked to indicate their current RTW status, in addition to completing questionnaires measuring their relationship with their superior, relationships with colleagues, and social support external to the workplace. The statistical analysis included 110 participants. An ANOVA indicated that participants in the RTW group reported significantly better relationships with their superiors and colleagues than participants in the non-durable RTW group. No significant differences were observed between the RTW, non-durable RTW and no RTW groups on a measure of social support external to the workplace. Although the findings were limited by the low response rate, an evaluation of demographics indicated the respondents were representative of the original target sample. The findings suggested that providing support in the workplace is an important area for intervention and may be a means of increasing durable RTW outcomes.</jats:p
Piezoelectric-based apparatus for strain tuning
We report the design and construction of piezoelectric-based apparatus for
applying continuously tuneable compressive and tensile strains to test samples.
It can be used across a wide temperature range, including cryogenic
temperatures. The achievable strain is large, so far up to 0.23% at cryogenic
temperatures. The apparatus is compact and compatible with a wide variety of
experimental probes. In addition, we present a method for mounting
high-aspect-ratio samples in order to achieve high strain homogeneity.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
