    Elliptical flux vortices in YBa2Cu3O7

    The most energetically favorable vortex in YBa2Cu3O7 forms perpendicular to an anisotropic plane. This vortex is elliptical in shape and is distinguished by an effective interchange of London penetration depths from one axis of the ellipse to another. By generalizing qualitatively from the isotropic to the anisotropic case, we suggest that the flux flow resistivity for the vortex that forms perpendicular to an anistropic plane should have a preferred direction. Similar reasoning indicates that the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature for a vortex mediated transition should be lower if the vortex is elliptical in shape

    The formation of an Abrikosov flux vortex with its core axis perpendicular to an anisotropic (a-c or b-c) plane in YBa2Cu3O7 requires only 1/10 of the energy required by the formation of a vortex with its core axis perpendicular to an isotropic (a-b) plane. It is not unusual for 18 to 35 percent of shake and bake bulk YBa2Cu3O7 to consist of empty pockets or voids inside the material. Studies estimate that 75 percent of the internal grain boundaries contain a-b planes. If many of the a-b planes are incident upon other grains, then many of the a-c and/or b-c planes must be incident on the voids. Evidently there are a large number of exposed anisotropic planes inside the bulk material. This condition is conducive to the formation of vortices that are perpendicular to the anisotropic planes. The magnetic flux density around such a vortex is constant along contour lines that are elliptical in shape, while the circulating supercurrent density must vary in magnitude along the same contour lines. The impact of this elliptical structure on the possibility of a Kosterlitz-Thouless type phase transition as the bulk material goes from superconducting to normal conducting is discussed. Implications with regard to the excess low frequency electrical noise that occurs at the temperature induced transition are also examined

    Public transport accessibility and housing value uplift: Evidence from the Docklands light railway in London

    Public transport infrastructure is essential to city development, improving accessibility and allowing people to engage in activities, allowing travel by environmentally-friendly modes, and also creating economic benefits. This study investigates the impacts of public transport accessibility on development, examining changes in housing prices, and applying hedonic modelling. London’s Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is selected as a case study. The findings show that residential properties in station catchment areas of the south-eastern and northern branches of the DLR have a premium respectively of 0.352% and 0.093% per 100 m proximity to a station. By assessing inclusive variables, it is found that housing value is also determined by the property’s own features and the neighbourhood, particularly the property tenure. The detected housing value uplift implies that the provision of good public transport is crucial in policy making, especially in areas with poor public transport accessibility. Moreover, since transport investment is partly capitalised in housing projects, we suggest that future transport infrastructure investment and housing development should be set within a framework of value capture policies

    Care Consistency With Documented Care Preferences: Methodologic Considerations for Implementing the “Measuring What Matters” Quality Indicator

    A basic tenet of palliative care is discerning patient treatment preferences and then honoring these preferences, reflected by the inclusion of “Care Consistency With Documented Care Preferences” as one of 10 “Measuring What Matters quality” indicators. Measuring What Matters indicators are intended to serve as a foundation for quality measurement in health care settings. However, there are a number of logistic and practical issues to be considered in the application of this quality indicator to clinical practice. In this brief methodologic report, we describe how care consistency with documented care preferences has been measured in research on patients near the end of life. Furthermore, we outline methodologic challenges in using this indicator in both research and practice, such as documentation, specificity and relevance, preference stability, and measuring nonevents. Recommendations to strengthen the accuracy of measurement of this important quality marker in health care settings include consistent recording of preferences in the medical record, considerations for selection of treatment preferences for tracking, establishing a protocol for review of preferences, and adoption of a consistent measurement approach

    A J-band detection of the donor star in the dwarf nova OY Carinae, and an optical detection of its `iron curtain'

    Purely photometric models can be used to determine the binary parameters of eclipsing cataclysmic variables with a high degree of precision. However, the photometric method relies on a number of assumptions, and to date there have been very few independent checks of this method in the literature. We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the P=90.9 min eclipsing cataclysmic variable OY Carinae obtained with X-shooter on the VLT, in which we detect the donor star from K I lines in the J-band. We measure the radial velocity amplitude of the donor star K2 = 470.0 +/- 2.7 km/s, consistent with predictions based upon the photometric method (470 +/- 7 km/s). Additionally, the spectra obtained in the UVB arm of X-shooter show a series of Fe I and Fe II lines with a phase and velocity consistent with an origin in the accretion disc. This is the first unambiguous detection at optical wavelengths of the `iron curtain' of disc material which has been previously reported to veil the white dwarf in this system. The velocities of these lines do not track the white dwarf, reflecting a distortion of the outer disc that we see also in Doppler images. This is evidence for considerable radial motion in the outer disk, at up to 90 km/s towards and away from the white dwarf.Comment: MNRAS accepted. 11 pages with 10 figures and 2 table

    Scientific basis for safely shutting in the Macondo Well after the April 20, 2010 Deepwater Horizon blowout

    As part of the government response to the Deepwater Horizon blowout, a Well Integrity Team evaluated the geologic hazards of shutting in the Macondo Well at the seafloor and determined the conditions under which it could safely be undertaken. Of particular concern was the possibility that, under the anticipated high shut-in pressures, oil could leak out of the well casing below the seafloor. Such a leak could lead to new geologic pathways for hydrocarbon release to the Gulf of Mexico. Evaluating this hazard required analyses of 2D and 3D seismic surveys, seafloor bathymetry, sediment properties, geophysical well logs, and drilling data to assess the geological, hydrological, and geomechanical conditions around the Macondo Well. After the well was successfully capped and shut in on July 15, 2010, a variety of monitoring activities were used to assess subsurface well integrity. These activities included acquisition of wellhead pressure data, marine multichannel seismic pro- files, seafloor and water-column sonar surveys, and wellhead visual/acoustic monitoring. These data showed that the Macondo Well was not leaking after shut in, and therefore, it could remain safely shut until reservoir pressures were suppressed (killed) with heavy drilling mud and the well was sealed with cement

    The conventional approach to modelling electro-optic sensor systems is to develop separate models for individual systems or classes of system, depending on the detector technology employed in the sensor and the application. However, this ignores commonality in design and in components of these systems. A generic approach is presented for modelling a variety of sensor systems operating in the infrared waveband that also allows systems to be modelled with different levels of detail and at different stages of the product lifecycle. The provision of different model types (parametric and image-flow descriptions) within the generic framework can allow valuable insights to be gained

    The Claims Culture: A Taxonomy of Industry Attitudes

    This paper presents an analysis of a familiar aspect of construction industry culture that we have dubbed 'the claims culture'. This is a culture of contract administration that lays a strong emphasis on the planning and management of claims. The principal elements of the analysis are two sets of distinctions. The first comprises economic and occupational orders, referring to two kinds of control that are exercised over the construction process; predicated respectively on economic ownership and occupational competence. The second refers to contrasting attitudes towards relationships and problem solving within these orders: respectively 'distributive' and 'integrative'. The concepts of economic and occupational order entail further sub-categories. The various attitudes associated with these categories and sub-categories are described. They are assessed as to their consequences for change initiatives in the industry

    Safe, Affordable, Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Systems

    The fundamental capability of Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) is game changing for space exploration. A first generation Nuclear Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (NCPS) based on NTP could provide high thrust at a specific impulse above 900 s, roughly double that of state of the art chemical engines. Characteristics of fission and NTP indicate that useful first generation systems will provide a foundation for future systems with extremely high performance. The role of the NCPS in the development of advanced nuclear propulsion systems could be analogous to the role of the DC-3 in the development of advanced aviation. Progress made under the NCPS project could help enable both advanced NTP and advanced Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP)
