    Discourses, travel behaviour and the 'last mile' in London

    The concept of 'sustainable travel' has been well discussed for over three decades; yet the meaning of sustainability in travel remains interpreted in many different ways. A transition to more environmentally sustainable travel has proved difficult to achieve, particularly in suburban areas. For individuals in society there are many different aspirations for, and constraints on, travelling in an environmentally sustainable manner. Lack of modal choice, route options, the cost of using public transport, and wider cultural norms are a few of the barriers to realizing a more sustainable transport network. Compounding this is the 'last mile' problem, concerning the facilities linking the main mode to the home, workplace or wider destination, which are often poor. This paper explores both the perceptions and opinions of everyday commuters in Ealing, London, including consideration of their localized lastmile issues. An in-depth study is undertaken with thirty-five employees of Ealing Council, using Q methodology to investigate the participants' perceptions towards, and awareness of, their respective journeys. The Q method analysis undertaken highlighted four major discourses associated with travel and the last mile problem in Ealing: 'the public transport user', 'the committed cyclist', 'the multi-modal traveller' and 'the frustrated traveller'. Understanding these different discourses and their unique characteristics has significant potential for assisting policy-makers and planners in developing more targeted investment priorities, policies, and stakeholder engagement strategies

    Multi-wavelength observations of cataclysmic variable stars

    Observations of the cataclysmic variable systems EX Dra, Z Cha, and OY Car using multi-wavelength data ranging from near-infrared to X-ray bands are presented and analysed. Obscuration of the white dwarf by intervening material is discussed in context of all three systems, including the confirmation of iron lines in the spectrum of OY Car and the absorbing nature of the accretion disc upon the soft X-ray band in Z Cha. Evidence for spiral shocks and slingshot prominences from the secondary star are found in EX Dra, while the extent of Z Cha's boundary layer is probed with extensive modelling of simultaneous optical and X-ray data. Combined with a spectral analysis, this leads to the conclusion of a truncated inner disc present within the system. The first radial velocity measurement of OY Car's red secondary star is presented, and used to produce a fully spectroscopic determination of the system's mass ratio which is compared to previous attempts using the photometric method. The second part of this thesis deals with the improvement of the Ultracam and Ultraspec instruments. For the former, increased colour precision is achieved by careful calibration of the instrument's filter response with respect to the SDSS system; a charge modulation problem is investigated and quantified; and the development of a software system designed to improve observation and reduction workflow is detailed. For Ultraspec, a careful analysis of the CCD parameters is performed in order to prepare the instrument for scientific quality data publication, including an analysis of spurious charge found present. It is also shown that the AC coupling of the video circuit in the CCD can cause erroneous values in the readout but can be rectified, and presence of charge trailing caused by electron traps is investigated with preliminary corrections shown

    Perceptions of Institutional Quality: Evidence of Limited Attention to Higher Education Rankings

    Rankings of colleges and universities provide information about quality and potentially affect where prospective students send applications for admission. We find evidence of limited attention to the popular U.S. News and World Report rankings of Americaā€™s Best Colleges. We estimate that applications discontinuously drop by 2%ā€“6% when the rank moves from inside the top 50 to outside the top 50 whereas there is no evidence of a corresponding discontinuous drop in institutional quality. Notably, the ranking of 50 corresponds to the first page cutoff of the printed U.S. News guides. The choice of college is typically a one-time decision with potentially large repercussions, so studentsā€™ limited attention to rankings likely represents an irrational bias that negatively affects welfare

    A J-band detection of the donor star in the dwarf nova OY Carinae, and an optical detection of its `iron curtain'

    Purely photometric models can be used to determine the binary parameters of eclipsing cataclysmic variables with a high degree of precision. However, the photometric method relies on a number of assumptions, and to date there have been very few independent checks of this method in the literature. We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the P=90.9 min eclipsing cataclysmic variable OY Carinae obtained with X-shooter on the VLT, in which we detect the donor star from K I lines in the J-band. We measure the radial velocity amplitude of the donor star K2 = 470.0 +/- 2.7 km/s, consistent with predictions based upon the photometric method (470 +/- 7 km/s). Additionally, the spectra obtained in the UVB arm of X-shooter show a series of Fe I and Fe II lines with a phase and velocity consistent with an origin in the accretion disc. This is the first unambiguous detection at optical wavelengths of the `iron curtain' of disc material which has been previously reported to veil the white dwarf in this system. The velocities of these lines do not track the white dwarf, reflecting a distortion of the outer disc that we see also in Doppler images. This is evidence for considerable radial motion in the outer disk, at up to 90 km/s towards and away from the white dwarf.Comment: MNRAS accepted. 11 pages with 10 figures and 2 table

    The focus of this article is the second-generation Irish in England. It is based on data collected as part of the Irish 2 project, which examined processes of identity formation amongst the second-generation Irish population in England and Scotland. The article examines and maps identifications and positionings of second-generation Irish people and discusses how two hegemonic domains - Ireland and England - intersect in the lives of the children of Irish-born parents, with material and psychological consequences. Their positionings in multiethnic Britain are compared with those of ā€˜visibleā€™ minority ethnic groups, and their narratives of belonging and non-belonging are analysed in terms of the limitations of whiteness and the boundaries of Englishness

    TROPIX: A solar electric propulsion flight experiment

    The Transfer Orbit Plasma Interaction Experiment (TROPIX) is a proposed scientific experiment and flight demonstration of a solar electric propulsion vehicle. Its mission goals are to significantly increase our knowledge of Earth's magnetosphere and its associated plasma environment and to demonstrate an operational solar electric upper stage (SEUS) for small launch vehicles. The scientific investigations and flight demonstration technology experiments are uniquely interrelated because of the spacecraft's interaction with the surrounding environment. The data obtained will complement previous studies of the Earth's magnetosphere and space plasma environment by supplying the knowledge necessary to attain the strategic objectives of the NASA Office of Space Science. This first operational use of a primary ion propulsion vehicle, designed to withstand the harsh environments from low Earth orbit to geosynchronous Earth orbit, may lead to the development of a new class of electric propulsion upper stages or space-based transfer vehicles and may improve future spacecraft design and safety
