    Megapolitan Political Ecology and Urban Metabolism in Southern Appalachia

    Drawing on megapolitan geographies, urban political ecology, and urban metabolism as theoretical frameworks, this article theoretically and empirically explores megapolitan political ecology. First, we elucidate a theoretical framework in the context of southern Appalachia and, in particular, the Piedmont megapolitan region, suggesting that the megapolitan region is a useful scale through which to understand urban metabolic connections that constitute this rapidly urbanizing area. We also push the environmental history and geography literature of the U.S. South and southern Appalachia to consider the central role urban metabolic connections play in the region's pressing social and environmental crises. Second, we empirically illuminate these human and nonhuman urban metabolisms across the Piedmont megapolitan region using data from the Coweeta Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program, especially highlighting a growing “ring of asphalt” that epitomizes several developing changes to patterns of metabolism. The conclusion suggests that changing urban metabolisms indicated by Coweeta LTER data, ranging from flows of people to flows of water, pose a complicated problem for regional governance and vitality in the future

    Retinal degeneration modulates intracellular localization of CDC42 in photoreceptors

    Purpose: Rho GTPases such as RAS-related C3 botulinum substrate 1 (RAC1) and cell division cycle 42 homolog (S. cerevisiae; CDC42) have been linked to cellular processes including movement, development, and apoptosis. Recently, RAC1 has been shown to be a pro-apoptotic factor in the retina during light-induced photoreceptor degeneration. Here, we analyzed the role of CDC42 in the degenerating retina. Methods: Photoreceptor degeneration was studied in a mouse model for autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (VPP) with or without a rod-specific knockdown of Cdc42, as well as in wild-type and Cdc42 knockdown mice after light exposure. Gene and protein expression were analyzed by real-time PCR, western blotting, and immunofluorescence. Retinal morphology and function were assessed by light microscopy and electroretinography, respectively. Results: CDC42 accumulated in the perinuclear region of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling–negative photoreceptors during retinal degeneration induced by excessive light exposure and in the rd1, rd10, and VPP mouse models of retinitis pigmentosa. The knockdown of Cdc42 did not affect retinal morphology or function in the adult mice and did not influence photoreceptor apoptosis or molecular signaling during induced and inherited retinal degeneration. Conclusions: Retinal degeneration induces the accumulation of CDC42 in the perinuclear region of photoreceptors. In contrast to RAC1, however, lack of CDC42 does not affect the progression of degeneration. CDC42 is also dispensable for normal morphology and function of adult rod photoreceptor cells

    Reports from the Fifth EAHN Meeting in Tallinn

    The fifth international meeting of the European Architectural History Network was held in Tallinn, at the National Library of Estonia, from 13 to 16 June 2018. The reports from this meeting aim to capture some of the main themes that came up during four intense days of academic discussions and exchange, meetings, and free-form interaction in different spatial and social settings. After the introduction by Andres Kurg, host of the Tallinn Meeting, five delegates review the five thematic tracks which organised the selected sessions and ran in parallel throughout the three days of the conference: Mediations, Comparative Modernities, Peripheries, Discovery and Persistence, and Body and Mind. In his closing keynote lecture, Reinhold Martin from Columbia University further reflected on the ample critical discussions which had taken place throughout the conference

    Can science writing collectives overcome barriers to more democratic communication and collaboration? Lessons from environmental communication praxis in southern Appalachia

    Despite compelling reasons to involve nonscientists in the production of ecological knowledge, cultural and institutional factors often dis-incentivize engagement between scientists and nonscientists. This paper details our efforts to develop a biweekly newspaper column to increase communication between ecological scientists, social scientists, and the communities within which they work. Addressing community-generated topics and written by a collective of social and natural scientists, the column is meant to foster public dialog about socio-environmental issues and to lay the groundwork for the coproduction of environmental knowledge. Our collective approach to writing addresses some major barriers to public engagement by scientists, but the need to insert ourselves as intermediaries limits these gains. Overall, our efforts at environmental communication praxis have not generated significant public debate, but they have supported future coproduction by making scientists a more visible presence in the community and providing easy pathways for them to begin engaging the public. Finally, this research highlights an underappreciated barrier to public engagement: scientists are not merely disconnected from the public, but also connected in ways that may be functional for their research. Many field scientists, for example, seek out neutral and narrowly defined connections that permit research access but are largely incompatible with efforts to address controversial issues of environmental governance

    Towards a synthesized critique of neoliberal biodiversity conservation

    During the last three decades, the arena of biodiversity conservation has largely aligned itself with the globally dominant political ideology of neoliberalism and associated governmentalities. Schemes such as payments for ecological services are promoted to reach the multiple ‘wins’ so desired: improved biodiversity conservation, economic development, (international) cooperation and poverty alleviation, amongst others. While critical scholarship with respect to understanding the linkages between neoliberalism, capitalism and the environment has a long tradition, a synthesized critique of neoliberal conservation - the ideology (and related practices) that the salvation of nature requires capitalist expansion - remains lacking. This paper aims to provide such a critique. We commence with the assertion that there has been a conflation between ‘economics’ and neoliberal ideology in conservation thinking and implementation. As a result, we argue, it becomes easier to distinguish the main problems that neoliberal win-win models pose for biodiversity conservation. These are framed around three points: the stimulation of contradictions; appropriation and misrepresentation and the disciplining of dissent.     Normalising jurisdictional heterotopias through place branding : the cases of Christiania and Metelkova

    This paper explores the political dimensions of place branding as a path to normalisation for areas where a paradoxical relationship with the law exists, places that we coin “jurisdictional heterotopias” borrowing from Foucauldian literature. We posit that place branding plays a fundamental role in facilitating scale jumping in the otherwise vertically aligned legal space, a hierarchy designed to exclude spatial multiplicity from its premise. By examining the role of place branding in such areas, we endeavour to understand and appreciate the selective application of the law, the perpetuation of unregulated and illegal activity, as well as the place – specificity of legal practice. Ultimately, we argue that strong place branding associations permit the engulfment of this type of heterotopias in the “mainstream” leading to their normalisation; such a normalisation results not only in the acceptance of their uniqueness by the institutional elements, but also in the potential nullification of the liberties their communities advocate

    Photoproduction of mesons in nuclei at GeV energies

    In a transport model that combines initial state interactions of the photon with final state interactions of the produced particles we present a calculation of inclusive photoproduction of mesons in nuclei in the energy range from 1 to 7 GeV. We give predictions for the photoproduction cross sections of pions, etas, kaons, antikaons, and π+π\pi^+\pi^- invariant mass spectra in ^{12}C and ^{208}Pb. The effects of nuclear shadowing and final state interaction of the produced particles are discussed in detail.Comment: Text added in summary in general reliability of the method, references updated.     Shadowing in the nuclear photoabsorption above the resonance region

    A model based on the hadronic fluctuations of the real photon is developed to describe the total photonucleon and photonuclear cross sections in the energy region above the nucleon resonances. The hadronic spectral function of the photon is derived including the finite width of vector-meson resonances and the quark-antiquark continuum. The shadowing effect is evaluated considering the effective interaction of the hadronic component with the bound nucleons within a Glauber-Gribov multiple scattering theory. The low energy onset of the shadowing effect is interpreted as a possible signature of a modification of the hadronic spectral function in the nuclear medium. A decrease of the ρ\rho-meson mass in nuclei is suggested for a better explanation of the experimental data.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
