This work was carried out with the aim of studying the effect of the administration of commercial quebracho extract (76% condensed tannins, CT) to sheep, for 70 days. Ten ruminally cannulated ewes were distributed into two experimental groups (control and quebracho). Zero (placebo) or 0.75 g of quebracho tannins extract per kg of live weight and day were intra-ruminally administered to the animals. The nylon bag technique was used to examine alfalfa hay in situ dry matter (DM), nitrogen (N) and neutral-detergent fiber (NDF) disappearances. In vivo digestibility, pH and ammonia-N and volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations were also measured. The daily ruminal administration of quebracho extract did not affect rumen fermentation parameters such as pH and ammonia-N and VFA concentrations, but reduced significantly the alfalfa hay DM potentially degradable fraction and the fractional rate of N degradation. Only on day 8 of the experiment were the DM and NDF disappearance values, after 24 h of in situ incubation, significantly lower in the animals treated with quebracho. No differences were observed on any other day of the experiment. Furthermore, the quebracho CT extract significantly decreased the in vivo digestibility of the following diet components: DM, crude protein and NDFEste trabajo se realiz贸 con el objetivo de estudiar el efecto de la administraci贸n intrarruminal a ovejas de extracto de quebracho (76% de taninos condensados), durante un per铆odo de tiempo relativamente largo (70 d铆as).

Twenty-two Merino lambs (average weight=15.3 kg) were used to study the effects of inclusion of sodium bicarbonate in the concentrate on feed intake, digestibility, rate of passage, nitrogen balance and ruminal fermentation in vivo and in vitro. Lambs were allocated to two experimental groups receiving concentrate and 20 g kg-1 sodium bicarbonate (group Bic) or concentrate alone (group Control). Both groups received barley straw ad libitum. Faeces and urine were collected for 5 days to estimate digestibility, nitrogen balance and rate of passage. After slaughter (at 25 kg live weight), samples of rumen fluid were collected from each lamb to determine parameters of ruminal fermentation and to be used as inocula for batch cultures of rumen microorganisms. There were no significant differences between treatments (P>0.10) in concentrate intake, dry matter digestibility, nitrogen balance and digesta kinetics. However, straw intake was greater (P0.10). Results for rumen fermentation parameters determined in in vitro batch cultures and for fermentation kinetics estimated with the gas production technique followed a similar trend to results observed in vivo. Most parameters showed no significant differences between groups. Nevertheless, the extent of degradation of barley grain in vitro tended to be stimulated (P<0.10) by the use of sodium bicarbonateSe utilizaron 22 corderos de raza Merina (15,3 kg de peso medio) que se distribuyeron en dos grupos, recibiendo el correspondiente pienso concentrado solo (grupo Control) o con 20 g kg-1 de bicarbonato s贸dico (grupo Bic).
