    New Young Stars and Brown Dwarfs in the Upper Scorpius Association

    To improve the census of the Upper Sco association (~11 Myr, ~145 pc), we have identified candidate members using parallaxes, proper motions, and color-magnitude diagrams from several wide-field imaging surveys and have obtained optical and infrared spectra of several hundred candidates to measure their spectral types and assess their membership. We also have performed spectroscopy on a smaller sample of previously known or suspected members to refine their spectral types and evidence of membership. We have classified 530 targets as members of Upper Sco, 377 of which lack previous spectroscopy. Our new compilation of all known members of the association contains 1631 objects. Although the census of Upper Sco has expanded significantly over the last decade, there remain hundreds of candidates that lack spectroscopy. The precise parallaxes and proper motions from the second data release of Gaia should extend down to substellar masses in Upper Sco, which will greatly facilitate the identification of the undiscovered members.Comment: Astronomical Journal, in press; machine readable tables and fits spectra available at http://personal.psu.edu/kll207/usco.ta

    We study atomic chains with nonlinear nearest neighbour interactions and prove the existence of fronts (heteroclinic travelling waves with constant asymptotic states). Generalizing recent results of Herrmann and Rademacher we allow for non-convex interaction potentials and find fronts with non-monotone profile. These fronts minimize an action integral and can only exists if the asymptotic states fulfil the macroscopic constraints and if the interaction potential satisfies a geometric graph condition.     Multiple Invaded Consolidating Materials

    We study a multiple invasion model to simulate corrosion or intrusion processes. Estimated values for the fractal dimension of the invaded region reveal that the critical exponents vary as function of the generation number GG, i.e., with the number of times the invasion process takes place. The averaged mass MM of the invaded region decreases with a power-law as a function of GG, M∼GβM\sim G^{\beta}, where the exponent β≈0.6\beta\approx 0.6. We also find that the fractal dimension of the invaded cluster changes from d1=1.887±0.002d_{1}=1.887\pm0.002 to ds=1.217±0.005d_{s}=1.217\pm0.005. This result confirms that the multiple invasion process follows a continuous transition from one universality class (NTIP) to another (optimal path). In addition, we report extensive numerical simulations that indicate that the mass distribution of avalanches P(S,L)P(S,L) has a power-law behavior and we find that the exponent τ\tau governing the power-law P(S,L)∼S−τP(S,L)\sim S^{-\tau} changes continuously as a function of the parameter GG.     Whom Do Nascent Ventures Search for? Resource Scarcity and Linkage Formation Activities during New Product Development Processes

    External linkages allow nascent ventures to access crucial resources during the process of new product development. Forming external linkages can substantially contribute to a venture’s performance. However, little is known about the paths of external linkage formation, as well as the circumstances that drive the choice to pursue one rather than another path. This gap deserves further investigation, because we do not know whether insights developed for incumbent firms also apply to nascent ventures: To address this gap, we explore a novel dataset of 370 venture creation processes. Using sequence analyses based on optimal matching techniques and cluster analyses, we reveal that nascent ventures pursue one of overall four distinct paths of linkage formation activities during new product development. Contrary to the findings of the strategy literature, we find that if nascent ventures engage in external linkages at all, they do not combine exploration- and exploitation-oriented linkages but form either exploration- or exploitation-oriented linkages. Additional regression analyses highlight the circumstances that lead nascent ventures to pursue one rather than the other pathways. Taken together, our analyses point out that resource scarcity constitutes an important factor shaping the linkage formation activities of nascent ventures. Accordingly, we show that nascent ventures tend not to optimize by adding complementary knowledge to the firm’s knowledge base but rather to extend the existing knowledge base—a strategy which we call bricolage.Introduction Linkage formation by nascent ventures in new product development Methods and data Results Discussion and conclusions Notes References Acknowledgement

    Gender gap in the ERASMUS mobility program

    Studying abroad has become very popular among students. The ERASMUS mobility program is one of the largest international student exchange programs in the world, which has supported already more than three million participants since 1987. We analyzed the mobility pattern within this program in 2011-12 and found a gender gap across countries and subject areas. Namely, for almost all participating countries, female students are over-represented in the ERASMUS program when compared to the entire population of tertiary students. The same tendency is observed across different subject areas. We also found a gender asymmetry in the geographical distribution of hosting institutions, with a bias of male students in Scandinavian countries. However, a detailed analysis reveals that this latter asymmetry is rather driven by subject and consistent with the distribution of gender ratios among subject areas
