Nitrogen fertilization increased grass litter decomposition in a tropical agroforestry system.
Litter decomposition and livestock excreta are two important sources for replenishing nutrients in the soil of the pastures, and their decomposition rates are afected by their quality, management practices, forage productivity, and biotic and abiotic factors. The objective of this research was to assess the efects of escalating levels of N fertilization (0, 100, 200, and 400 kg N haâ1 yrâ1) on litter and fecal decomposition in an agroforestry system comprising palisadegrass [Urochloa brizantha (Hochst. Ex A.Rich.) Stapf. cv. Marandu] intercropped with hybrid eucalyptus trees [Eucalyptus urophyllaĂEucalyptus tereticornis], in a two-year feld trial. The experiment was set in a randomized complete block design with four treatments and three repetitions. Litter (0, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and 256 days) and cattle excrement samples (0, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128 days) were incubated on the ground. For forage litter samples, the interaction between N fertilizationĂyear was observed for the decomposition rate (k) of DM (P=0.0014) and OM (P=0.0094). The greatest litter OM disappearance was observed at 400 kg N fertilization haâ1 yearâ1 (651 g kgâ1 DM at 256 days). The interaction between nitrogen fertilizer rateĂincubation time, or the isolated efect of the treatment was not observed on fecal decomposition (P>0.05). Higher levels of N fertilization associated with the rainy period resulted in faster decomposition of palisadegrass litter, however, it did not show to have a strong infuence on the excreta decomposition in this agroforestry system
The structure of Chariklo's rings from stellar occultations
Two narrow and dense rings (called C1R and C2R) were discovered around the
Centaur object (10199) Chariklo during a stellar occultation observed on 2013
June 3. Following this discovery, we planned observations of several
occultations by Chariklo's system in order to better characterize the physical
properties of the ring and main body. Here, we use 12 successful occulations by
Chariklo observed between 2014 and 2016. They provide ring profiles (physical
width, opacity, edge structure) and constraints on the radii and pole position.
Our new observations are currently consistent with the circular ring solution
and pole position, to within the km formal uncertainty for the ring
radii derived by Braga-Ribas et al. The six resolved C1R profiles reveal
significant width variations from to 7.5 km. The width of the fainter
ring C2R is less constrained, and may vary between 0.1 and 1 km. The inner and
outer edges of C1R are consistent with infinitely sharp boundaries, with
typical upper limits of one kilometer for the transition zone between the ring
and empty space. No constraint on the sharpness of C2R's edges is available. A
1 upper limit of m is derived for the equivalent width of
narrow (physical width <4 km) rings up to distances of 12,000 km, counted in
the ring plane
Functional Characterization of an Aspergillus fumigatus Calcium Transporter (PmcA) that Is Essential for Fungal Infection
Aspergillus fumigatus is a primary and opportunistic pathogen, as well as a major allergen, of mammals. The Ca+2-calcineurin pathway affects virulence, morphogenesis and antifungal drug action in A. fumigatus. Here, we investigated three components of the A. fumigatus Ca+2-calcineurin pathway, pmcA,-B, and -C, which encode calcium transporters. We demonstrated that CrzA can directly control the mRNA accumulation of the pmcA-C genes by binding to their promoter regions. CrzA-binding experiments suggested that the 5âČ-CACAGCCAC-3âČ and 5âČ-CCCTGCCCC-3âČ sequences upstream of pmcA and pmcC genes, respectively, are possible calcineurin-dependent response elements (CDREs)-like consensus motifs. Null mutants were constructed for pmcA and -B and a conditional mutant for pmcC demonstrating pmcC is an essential gene. The ÎpmcA and ÎpmcB mutants were more sensitive to calcium and resistant to manganese and cyclosporin was able to modulate the sensitivity or resistance of these mutants to these salts, supporting the interaction between calcineurin and the function of these transporters. The pmcA-C genes have decreased mRNA abundance into the alveoli in the ÎcalA and ÎcrzA mutant strains. However, only the A. fumigatus ÎpmcA was avirulent in the murine model of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis

Muon identification using multivariate techniques in the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV
The identification of prompt and isolated muons, as well as muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays, is an important task. We developed two multivariate techniques to provide highly efficient identification for muons with transverse momentum greater than 10 GeV. One provides a continuous variable as an alternative to a cut-based identification selection and offers a better discrimination power against misidentified muons. The other one selects prompt and isolated muons by using isolation requirements to reduce the contamination from nonprompt muons arising in heavy-flavour hadron decays. Both algorithms are developed using 59.7 fbâ1 of proton-proton collisions data at a centre-of-mass energy of âs = 13 TeV collected in 2018 with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC

Search for supersymmetry in final states with disappearing tracks in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV
A search is presented for charged, long-lived supersymmetric particles in final states with one or more disappearing tracks. The search is based on data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of Formula Presented. The search is performed over final states characterized by varying numbers of jets, Formula Presented-tagged jets, electrons, and muons. The length of signal-candidate tracks in the plane perpendicular to the beam axis is used to characterize the lifetimes of wino- and Higgsino-like charginos produced in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The Formula Presented energy loss of signal-candidate tracks is used to increase the sensitivity to charginos with a large mass and thus a small Lorentz boost. The observed results are found to be statistically consistent with the background-only hypothesis. Limits on the pair-production cross section of gluinos and squarks are presented in the framework of simplified models of supersymmetric particle production and decay, and for electroweakino production based on models of wino and Higgsino dark matter. The limits presented are the most stringent to date for scenarios with light third-generation squarks and a wino- or Higgsino-like dark matter candidate capable of explaining the observed dark matter relic density

Search for new Higgs bosons via same-sign top quark pair production in association with a jet in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV
A search is presented for new Higgs bosons in proton-proton (pp) collision events in which a same-sign top quark pair is produced in association with a jet, via the ppâtH/Aâttc⟠and ppâtH/Aâttu⟠processes. Here, H and A represent the extra scalar and pseudoscalar boson, respectively, of the second Higgs doublet in the generalized two-Higgs-doublet model (g2HDM). The search is based on pp collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fbâ1. Final states with a same-sign lepton pair in association with jets and missing transverse momentum are considered. New Higgs bosons in the 200â1000 GeV mass range and new Yukawa couplings between 0.1 and 1.0 are targeted in the search, for scenarios in which either H or A appear alone, or in which they coexist and interfere. No significant excess above the standard model prediction is observed. Exclusion limits are derived in the context of the g2HDM

Search for flavor changing neutral current interactions of the top quark in final states with a photon and additional jets in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV
A search for the production of a top quark in association with a photon and additional jets via flavor changing neutral current interactions is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of Formula Presented. The search is performed by looking for processes where a single top quark is produced in association with a photon, or a pair of top quarks where one of the top quarks decays into a photon and an up or charm quark. Events with an electron or a muon, a photon, one or more jets, and missing transverse momentum are selected. Multivariate analysis techniques are used to discriminate signal and standard model background processes. No significant deviation is observed over the predicted background. Observed (expected) upper limits are set on the branching fractions of top quark decays: Formula Presented (Formula Presented) and Formula Presented (Formula Presented) at 95% confidence level, assuming a single nonzero coupling at a time. The obtained limit for Formula Presented is similar to the current best limit, while the limit for Formula Presented is significantly tighter than previous results
