Turning noise into signal: learning from the scatter in the Hubble diagram

The supernova (SN) Hubble diagram residual contains valuable information on both the present matter power spectrum and its growth history. In this paper we show that this information can be retrieved with precision by combining both peculiar velocity and weak-lensing analysis on the data. To wit, peculiar velocity induces correlations on the nearby SN while lensing induces a non-Gaussian dispersion in faraway objects. We show that both effects have almost orthogonal degeneracies and discuss how they can be extracted simultaneously from the data. We analyze the JLA supernova catalog in a 14-dimensional parameter space, assuming a flexible growth-rate index $\gamma$. We arrive at the following marginalized constraints: $\sigma_8 = 0.65^{+0.23}_{-0.37}$ and $\gamma = 1.38^{+1.7}_{-0.65}$. Assuming instead GR as the correct gravitation theory (and thus $\gamma \equiv 0.55$), the constraints in $\sigma_8$ tighten further: $\sigma_8 = 0.40^{+0.21}_{-0.23}$. Incidencia de la visión, misión y los valores institucionales en la Proyección Social de ITCA-FEPADE

Este artículo explica cómo a través del Programa de Proyección Social la Escuela Especializada en Ingeniería ITCA-FEPADE, contribuye a resolver algunas de las necesidades que enfrenta la población y cómo la Visión, Misión y Valores institucionales influyen en la formación de técnicos integrales que estén al servicio de las comunidades. Como es sabido, la educación procura un cambio de conducta en el individuo; es un proceso multidireccional mediante el cual se transmiten conocimientos, valores, costumbres, creencias y formas de actuar. Ésta no sólo se produce a través de la expresión ni en un contexto de cuatro paredes, pues está presente en nuestras acciones, sentimientos, actitudes y expresiones de una persona frente a sus semejantes. Es importante destacar que la formación que se brinda en ITCA-FEPADE está orientada a fomenentar en el joven valores institucionales y otros valores, tales como el espíritu de servicio, el respeto al prójimo, la solidaridad y el altruismo. El valor de la integridad implica rectitud, bondad, honradez, trasparencia; quien la practica es alguien en quien se puede confiar y que está dispuesto a tenderle la mano a sus semejantes sin esperar nada a cambio. ITCA-FEPADE, a través del Programa de Proyección Social, cubre algunas necesidades en las comunidades de su zona de influencia. Éstas son identificadas y diagnosticadas por docentes y estudiantes, generándose proyectos en áreas tales como: capacitaciones técnicas, reparación y diseño de instalaciones eléctricas, levantamientos topográficos y estudios de suelo, diseño de mapas de riesgo y carpetas técnicas, entre otras. La participación activa de los estudiantes en estos proyectos los hace enfrentar y hacer propias las problemáticas de la población; hace que se identifiquen con ella y de esa manera se motivan, convirtiéndose en agentes de cambio. Es con la proyección social que se crea el escenario para ejercitar el “Aprender Haciendo”; en este contexto, los educandos se sienten desafiados y con movidos a reafirmar por convicción propia el aprendizaje en valores y a ejercitar los conocimientos teóricos y prácticos. La educación integral en ITCA-FEPADE, es el medio para que los estudiantes asimilen y pongan en práctica normas de conducta, modos de ser y conocimientos, mediante un proceso activo de socialización, logrando cumplir con los objetivos de la educación de formar hombres libres, conscientes y responsables de sí mismos, capaces de actuar, generar y construir su propio aprendizaje para el beneficio de la sociedad

SFDL: MVC Applied to Workflow Design

Process management based on workflow systems is a growing trend in collaborative environments. One of the most notorious areas of improvement is that of user interfaces, especially since business process definition languages do not address efficiently the point of contact between workflow engines and human interactions. With that in focus, we propose the MVC pattern design to workflow systems. To accomplish this, we have designed a new dynamic view definition language called SFDL, oriented towards the easy interoperability with the different workflow definition languages, while maintaining enough flexibility to be represented in different formats and being adaptable to several environments. To validate our approach, we have carried out an implementation in a real banking scenario, which has provided continuous feedback and enabled us to refine the proposal. The work is fully based on widely accepted and used web standards (XML, YAML, JSON, Atom and REST). Some guidelines are given to facilitate the adoption of our solution

Increased moral condemnation of accidental harm in institutionalized adolescents

Social deprivation, as faced by children in institutional rearing, involves socio-cognitive deficits that may persist into adolescence. In particular, two relevant domains which prove sensitive to pre-adult neurodevelopment are theory of mind (ToM) and moral judgment (a complex skill which partially depend upon ToM). However, no study has assessed moral evaluation in adolescents with a history of institutional care, let alone its relationship with ToM skills. The present study aims to bridge this gap, focusing on moral evaluation of harmful actions in institutionalized adolescents (IAs). Relative to adolescents raised with their biological families, IAs exhibited less willingness to exculpate protagonists for accidental harms, suggesting an under-reliance on information about a person’s (innocent) intentions. Moreover, such abnormalities in IAs were associated with ToM impairments. Taken together, our findings extend previous findings of delayed ToM under social deprivation, further showing that the development of moral cognition is also vulnerable to the impact of institutionalization. These results could pave the way for novel research on the role of institutional rearing in ToM and moral development during adolescence.Fil: Baez, Sandra. Due to its technological, scientific and cultural dimensions, astronomy is a unique discipline to help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there are currently nearly 30 million refugees in the world. While there are many (and very necessary) programmes supporting their basic needs, different indicators suggest that the resolution to refugee and internal displacement situations require not only humanitarian interventions, but also development-led actions. Plasmatic Biochemical Variables Associated with Polymorphisms in the Endothelin-1 and Endothelin-1 Receptor a Genes in Hypertensive Patients: Pilot Study

Patients considered hypertensive between April 2009and April 2010.Methodology: Were assessed 136 patients serum lipid profiles, renal and hepatic functions andwere taken Thoracic X-rays, electrocardiograms, and echocardiographs. DNA extracted fromcirculating leukocyte were used to analyze the polymorphisms of genes by PCR-RFLP.Results: For the polymorphisms of Receptor A from Endothelin -1 studied the presence ofcytosine homozygous genotype was less frequent in males (P = .02). For both genders, the samegenotype was associated to low plasma alkaline phosphatase activity and cholesterol levels. Thepresence of thymidine nucleotide allele correlated with plasma alkaline phosphatase activity andcholesterol levels. The Thymidine allele correlated with the degree of cardiovascular compromise(r = 0.54, P= .002). For the genetic variant in the ET-1 gene, the homozygous adenine deletionwas associated to normal plasma levels of glutamate/pyruvate transaminase enzyme activity, uricacid concentration, cholesterol, and Low Density Lipoprotein in hypertensive subjects withoutclinical risk.Conclusion: We observed a gender-specific protective effect for EDNRA gene variations, thesubjects that carried the TT genotype presented more aggressive symptomatology.
