The calcareous nannofossil crisis in Northern Spain (Asturias province) linked to the Early Toarcian warming-driven mass extinction

Quantitative analysis of Late Pliensbachian–Early Toarcian calcareous nannofossil assemblages from the West Rodiles section (Asturias, Northern Spain) has been performed in order to interpret the paleoenvironmental changes that occurred during this time interval, characterized by a major extinction event, and especially around the Lower Toarcian Tenuicostatum/Serpentinum zonal and extinction boundary. Nannofossil data were statisti- cally treated: the Shannon diversity index was calculated, and results were compared to the stable isotope data and the total organic carbon content. To determine the changes recorded in the entire nannofossil communities, a principal component analysis was applied. During the latest Pliensbachian, the nannofossil assemblages were dominated by Schizosphaerella sp. and Tubirhabdus patulus, followed by the dominance of Calcivascularis jansae, taxa that probably thrived in rather cold waters. The progressive decrease in the relative abundances of both Schizosphaerella sp. and C. jansae coincides with a progressive increase in paleotemperatures during the extinc- tion interval, as indicated by the δ18O values measured on diagenetically screened belemnite calcite. Biscutum spp. dominated the nannofossil assemblages during the Early Toarcian Tenuicostatum Ammonite Zone, when seawaters were warm. In the West Rodiles section, the extinction boundary coincides with the deposition of the laminated shales, where especially high relative abundances of Calyculus spp. were recorded. After the extinction boundary, C. jansae becomes extinct, the relative abundance of Biscutum spp. sharply decreases, and the nannofossil assemblages become dominated by the Crepidolithus and Lotharingius species, which have been interpreted as opportunistic taxa. The Shannon Index fluctuates throughout the studied section, although it is especially high after the extinction boundary. The covariance between the nannofossil crisis and the evolu- tion of δ18Obel-based seawater paleotemperatures, as well as the fact that none of the explanations proposed by other authors seems to explain our observations, suggest a clear relationship between the increase in paleotemperature and the changes recorded in our nannofossil assemblages. Nevertheless, we do not discard possible changes in other paleoenvironmental parameters related or not to warmin

Advanced daylighting evaluation applied to cultural heritage buildings and museums: Application to the cloister of Santa Maria El Paular

    Get PDF
A method to evaluate the risk of using daylight in museums and cultural heritage exhibitions is presented along this study. Although daylight is an ecological and sustainable source of energy and sometimes also an intrinsic part of the artwork, the use of Natural lighting may cause damages in them due to the difficulty of controlling its variability. The developed method quantifies the damage produced to the artworks by daylight compared to artificial light taking into account the level of radiation and its spectral distribution in space and time by comparison with the damage caused by an Illuminant A (Global Risk Factor). The method, applied to the permanent paintings exhibition in the cloister of the fifteenth century of the Monastery of Santa Maria de El Paular, certifies that the control and exploitation of Natural Light should consider an optimal balance between exposure and damage

Consensus on the Clinical Approach to Moderate-to-Severe Atopic Dermatitis in Spain: A Delphi Survey

Background. The purpose of this study was to gather information on the current assessment and management of patients with moderate-to-severe AD in routine daily practice. Methods. A cross-sectional two-round Delphi survey with the participation of dermatologists and allergologists throughout Spain was conducted. They completed a 46-item questionnaire, and consensus was defined when responses of >= 80% of participants coincided in the categories of a 5-point Likert scale for that item. Results. A total of 105 specialists (aged 40-59 years) completed the two rounds. Participants agreed regarding the consideration of AD as a multifaceted disease and the differences in clinical presentation of AD according to the patient's age. It is recommendable to perform a skin biopsy to exclude early stage T-cell cutaneous lymphoma, psoriasis, or dermatitis herpetiformis, among others (99.1%). Also, consensus was reached regarding the use of the SCORAD index to quantify the severity of the disease (86.7%), the use of wet wraps to increase the effect of topical corticosteroids (90.4%), the usefulness of proactive treatment during follow-up (85.6%) and tacrolimus ointment (91.2%) to reduce new flares, and the fact that crisaborole is not the treatment of choice for severe AD (92.4%). AD was not considered a contraindication for immunotherapy in patients with allergic respiratory diseases (92.4%). In patients with severe AD, the use of immune response modifier drugs (97.6%) or phototherapy (92.8%) does not sufficiently cover their treatment needs. Consensus was also obtained regarding the role of the new biologic drugs (93.6%) targeting cytokines involved in the Th2 inflammatory pathway (92.0%) and the potential role of dupilumab as first-line treatment (90.4%) in moderate-to-severe AD patients. Conclusion. This study contributes a reference framework to the care of AD patients. There is no diagnostic test or biomarkers to direct treatment or to assess the severity of the disease, and many therapeutic challenges remain

Proposal of new Natura 2000 network boundaries in Spain based on the value of importance for biodiversity and connectivity analysis for its improvement

The aim of the Natura 2000 Network is to ensure the conservation of habitats and species in their natural areas of distribution. Connectivity is an essential part of this conservation. For this purpose, a value map of importance for biodiversity (V.I.B) was generated proposing 4 levels of protection and overlapped with the Natura 2000 network. New boundaries for the zoning are proposed adding 1.600.000 ha. Two connectivity indices (MSPA and PC) are calculated in the 4 different scenarios. With these indices it is possible to know the number of existing nuclei and connectors in each of the scenarios. New boundaries cover more areas of interest for biodiversity as well as zones of great importance in relation to connectivity. We propose a uniform method that can be extrapolated to any European territor
