    The effects of breastfeeding on childhood BMI: a propensity score matching approach

    This paper investigates the effect of breastfeeding on childhood body mass index (BMI). We use data from the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS), a nationally representative UK cohort survey, containing detailed infant feeding information, which allow us to explore the effects of a range of breastfeeding variables on the mean BMI of children breastfed for different durations and for exclusive and partial breastfeeding. Using propensity score matching, we find statistically significant influences of breastfeeding on childhood BMI, particularly in older children and when breastfeeding is prolonged and exclusive. The effects of breastfeeding on BMI are small in magnitude but large relative to the mean BMIs of children this age. At this young age, there is not a large difference in BMI between children who are identified as obese and those who are identified as normal weight, so even a small difference in BMI could mean the difference between children being overweight or a healthy weight. We suggest that breastfeeding should be encouraged as part of wider lifestyle interventions in order to help reduce BMI as well as improve other childhood outcomes. This could be important evidence for public health bodies when creating public health guidelines and recommendations

    Aphia for a World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS)

    An authoritative and global register of all marine species is urgently needed to facilitate biological data management and exchange, the integration of ecological and biodiversity data with non-biological ocean data, and to assist taxonomists in describing new species, revisions and correcting past nomenclatural confusion. The exercise of producing this list has added benefits in fostering collaboration between experts at a global scale and maintaining taxonomic expertise. Easy access to the register will allow local ecologists and biologists to use correct taxonomic names, and will encourage addition of overlooked species to the list. This will in turn stimulate a.o. biodiversity Species’(WoRMS) is the logical next step for ocean biodiversity informatics (OBI) to become an everyday and essential supporting infrastructure for the marine sciences, monitoring and environmental management. WoRMS is a standards based, quality controlled, expert validated, open-access infrastructure for research, education, and data and resource management. It builds on experience in developing the European Register of Marine Species and the Ocean Biogeographic Information System, and will collaborate with and contribute to the GBIF’s ECAT and planned Global Names Architecture, Species 2000, the Catalogue of Life, the Ocean Biogeographic Information System, the Encyclopaedia of Life, SeaLifeBase, IOC’s International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange, and related initiatives. The Aphia database, developed and maintained by the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), serves as the IT platform for WoRMS. Currently, well over 100 world leading taxonomists are contributing towards this World Register WoRMS webportal and all its functionalities, such as the web-based services and the online edit tool for the taxonomic experts.     Prevalence of Intestinal Parasites in Endangered Ashy Red Colobus Monkeys (Piliocolobus tephrosceles) in Tanzania

    Intestinal parasites constitute one of the most frequent causes of gastrointestinal diseases in primates, directly affecting their health. We sampled 3 populations of the Endangered ashy red colobus monkey (Piliocolobus tephrosceles) with different levels of anthropogenic disturbance in Tanzania. We collected faecal samples (n=157) soon after defecation and fixed them in situ in 70% ethanol. We then re-fixed half of each sample in MIF (merthiolate iodine formaline) for microscopic study and saved the rest for molecular analysis. We examined helminth eggs, larvae and protozoan cysts using a light microscope after faecal sedimentation. We analysed samples positive for Giardia using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to determine genotypes. The overall prevalence of protozoan and helminth infection was 94.3% (148/157), with 64.9% (96/148) being infected by 1 species, 25.7% (38) by 2 species, and 9.5% (14) by 3 or more species. We detected 8 species of intestinal parasites: Ancylostoma sp. (13.4%), Trichuris trichiura (3.8%), Strongyloides stercoralis rhabditoid larvae (2.5%), Entamoeba chatonni (82.8%), Iodamoeba butschlii (14%), Endolimax nana (4.5%), Blastocystis hominis (2.5%) and Giardia duodenalis (14%). These species were detected in different combinations in the 3 areas, while Giardia was detected in only 1 area. The molecular analysis of positive Giardia samples showed that all of them belonged to assemblage B, which could also infect humans. However, we could not identify an exclusively anthropogenic origin of the parasitic species found. Our study contributes to our knowledge of parasitic infections in ashy monkeys in Tanzania, allowing us to assess their health status and disease risk, which in turn will help us design more successful conservation strategies for this Endangered primate in Tanzani

    We show that a model based on a D3-brane--anti-D3-brane system at finite temperature, proposed previously as a microscopic description of the non-rotating black threebrane of type IIB supergravity arbitrarily far from extremality, can also successfully reproduce the entropy of the rotating threebrane with arbitrary charge (including the neutral case, which corresponds to the Kerr black hole in seven dimensions).     A Study of the 't Hooft Model with the Overlap Dirac Operator

    We present the results of an exploratory numerical study of two dimensional QCD with overlap fermions. We have performed extensive simulations for U(N_c) and SU(N_c) color groups with N_c=2, 3, 4 and coupling constants chosen to satisfy the 't Hooft condition g^2 N_c =const=4/3. We have computed the meson spectrum and decay constants, the topological susceptibility and the chiral condensate. For U(N_c) gauge groups, our results indicate that the Witten-Veneziano relation is satisfied within our statistical errors and that the chiral condensate for N_f=1 is compatible with a non-zero value. Our results exhibit universality in N_c and confirm once more the excellent chiral properties of the overlap-Dirac operator.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure
