    Get PDF

Green's functions technique for calculating the emission spectrum in a quantum dot-cavity system

We introduce the Green's functions technique as an alternative theory to the quantum regression theorem formalism for calculating the two-time correlation functions in open quantum systems. In particular, we investigate the potential of this theoretical approach by its application to compute the emission spectrum of a dissipative system composed by a single quantum dot inside of a semiconductor cavity. We also describe a simple algorithm based on the Green's functions technique for calculating the emission spectrum of the quantum dot as well as of the cavity which can easily be implemented in any numerical linear algebra package. We find that the Green's functions technique demonstrates a better accuracy and efficiency in the calculation of the emission spectrum and it allows to overcome the inherent theoretical difficulties associated to the direct application of the quantum regression theorem approach

Data Access for LIGO on the OSG

During 2015 and 2016, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) conducted a three-month observing campaign. These observations delivered the first direct detection of gravitational waves from binary black hole mergers. To search for these signals, the LIGO Scientific Collaboration uses the PyCBC search pipeline. To deliver science results in a timely manner, LIGO collaborated with the Open Science Grid (OSG) to distribute the required computation across a series of dedicated, opportunistic, and allocated resources. To deliver the petabytes necessary for such a large-scale computation, our team deployed a distributed data access infrastructure based on the XRootD server suite and the CernVM File System (CVMFS). This data access strategy grew from simply accessing remote storage to a POSIX-based interface underpinned by distributed, secure caches across the OSG.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PEARC1

Feasibility Analysis, Dynamics, and Control of Distillation Columns With Vapor Recompression.

The conventional distillation system owes its existence to its simplicity, low investment, and inexpensive energy. Inexpensive energy is something that belongs to the past. Therefore, vapor recompression has indeed become more attractive despite the more complex flow arrangements. In this research, a steady state model was developed to study the effect of different variables on the feasibility of heat pump installations. As expected, the heat pump system favored the close boiling mixture against the wide boiling mixture. A relationship between the savings and the thermodynamic availability of the mixture was devised. The savings were also found to be very sensitive to the relative cost of steam and electricity. A possible way of predicting the pressure effect on the heat pump feasibility based on the Antoine equation for the vapor pressure of the key components was also devised. A dynamic model of a distillation column with a heat pump system was developed which includes pressure dynamics in the compressor suction and in the compressor discharge. Pressure dynamics are included in order to study the effect of pressure variations on the overall control strategy. This model was used to perform dynamic and control studies. The presence of stiff differential equations in the dynamic model justified a search for a more efficient integration technique. The LSODE computer software package was found to be the most effective numerical integration package for our system. Basic distillation control schemes which utilize pressure to manipulate the trim cooler outflow were successfully implemented. No interaction was found between the pressure control loop and the product composition control loop. On the other hand, some interaction was observed when the temperature was used to indirectly control the composition. This interaction was found to be closely related to the relative magnitude of the sample time of the pressure controller to the sample time of the temperature controller. Vapor recompression is a feasible way of economizing energy on a distillation unit. The outlook for the use of the heat pump concept has now induced process engineers to consider its applications

This locally-tailored research focuses on sustainable housing in San Luis, Potosí, Mexico and includes verticality to increase urban density, flexibility to adapt to demographic changes and climate change resilience through the assessment of bio-climatic design strategies into a single prototype. This prototype was also useful to compare the thermal comfort performance of hollow concrete blocks and fired bricks; such a measure was made via DesignBuilder. This paper shows that a locally-tailored bio-climatic design may enable the production of sustainable housing resilient to climate change in San Luis, Potosí.
